- A short documentary on the story of the sulphur miners that labour in the belly of the Ijen volcano. In conditions that most would find inhospitable, these men work incredibly hard to manually mine, then carry out, huge loads of sulphur.
I went up here few days ago (Jan 28th 2016) and I cried upon seeing what a difficult job they have. And since I am Malaysian, I can understand their language (even not completely) and had managed a talk with them. It's easy for us to say "I will never do this kind of job" or '' come on, u gotta get yrself at least protective gask man" but really, they can't even afford that. I'm pissed at the owner of the company, and other related authority. I wish I cud figure a way to help

They put their life in danger for their family. They have no choice to get a better job. There is no safety equipments, even they dont have a pair of shoes to work. They dont have proper mask to avoid the gas and its not worth with how much they get paid for the sulphur. Some of the miners has been working as sulphur miner for over a decade or maybe more. I ever tried to put the baskets on my shoulder and its too way heavy and I still could not believe they do it everyday going up and down through the deadly passage for years. Its just unbeliveable! I love the scenery and every year I come to this place because its so amazing and lucky me for having this beautiful place in my village :-)
Yeah, its one of those times and places where you could spend $10,000 on thst village and vastly improve their lives.

Though it won't happen but it would be nice if one could get a blasting company with dynamite to set charges and blast a smooth paved path down to the fumarole field so that rather than walking they can drive 4X4 ATV's with trailers and take much larger loads of sulfur and get the proper breathing equipment so they can safely work in the volcanic gasses.
Who in their right mind would bomb an active volcano? Can you guarantee that it won't trigger worldwide volcano eruption like what happen with Mount Krakatau in 18th century?
Maybe. Indonesia's economy is quickly going.

Fuck first week there id have built a pulley system and had men loading the bottom and unloading at the top...Very silly.
I don't feel a bit sorry for them. if you gonna have a family then you better damn sure be prepared to support them. so basically, they chose this life.
Yeah let's hope life doesn't stifle you up to a point where you have no other choice but to do this. Be grateful for what you have and have a little empathy for those who don't.
