This was absolutely a reference to what Miyazaki had coming for elden ring. The spiral and tree designs. Like chester from dark souls, like yamamura from Bloodborne. I felt it in my soul from the moment i saw their designs.

I remember when I first played Ashes of Ariandel, I got a weird vibe from the Millwood Knights. For some reason, they felt just out of place enough for me to be notable, like they were... hinting at something. Kinda like Marvelous Chester, who's considered a "teaser" for Bloodborn of sorts. And the Milwood Knights do worship a big tree and wouldn't look super out of place in the Lands Between. I just think it's funny that it ended up that way despite my assumption back then being based on nothing but my gut-feeling.

I have the theory that everything about the Millwood Knights and the Beast of the Ethereal Oak was foreshadowing of what would be the idea of the Elden Beast, and with the new Content of "Elden Ring", Night Reign, I hope the knights appear there and in the Lore of Night Reign say the Millwood Knights are worshipers of the Ertree (Etheral Oak for them), the Elden Beast or the Regal Spirit.

Elements of Elden Ring remind me of some Dark Souls events, but with different outcomes. Midir ruined the Millwood Knights' sacred tree, but the Erdtree withstood Gransax's attack on Leyndell. Also, another comparison is with Oolacile and Leyndell. Oolacile, a land of glowing plants, began dabbling in Dark sorcery and fell before ever facing the gods, whereas Leyndell stuck with its glowing tree and defeated the fire-worshiping giants.

Damn they're based on Norse Mythology? Who would've known but fr they're one one of my fav souls designed characters, they're cool. Though I've always wondered why they're in the painted world and how?
Read the lore. They came to the Painted World after their original home was destroyed by an Abyss Dragon, presumably Midir, before they all went hollow.

now if only they had actually put an armor like this one into Elden Ring, closest I can think of is the Kaiden set
