  • Welcome to my channel! In this video, I dive into the intriguing question of whether or not to upgrade from the Leica Q2 to the latest model, the Q3. As an avid photographer and proud owner of the Q2, I've been contemplating this decision, and today I want to share with you the reasons behind my choice to stick with the Q2 and forego the Q3 upgrade.
    Throughout this video, I'll explore the key differences between these two remarkable cameras, weighing the advantages and drawbacks of upgrading. From the technical specifications to the performance and overall user experience, I'll provide an in-depth analysis to help you understand why the Q2 continues to meet my needs and why I believe it's still a powerhouse in the photography world.
    Join me as I discuss the unparalleled image quality, the intuitive handling, and the unique features that make the Leica Q2 a standout camera. I'll also touch on the improvements and new features introduced in the Q3, acknowledging their significance while explaining why they aren't compelling enough for me to make the switch.
    Whether you're a fellow Leica enthusiast, a photographer in search of your next upgrade, or simply curious about the latest camera models, this video aims to provide valuable insights into the thought process behind choosing to stick with the Leica Q2.
    So, if you're on the fence about upgrading to the Q3 or just want to explore the merits of the Leica Q2, join me on this journey as I share my personal perspective and experiences. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe to stay updated with future photography content on my channel.

    I've had my Q2 for three years now, and am not tempted to make the plunge for the Q3. The Q2 is still a stellar performer in my opinion, and will continue to be my EDC camera for the foreseeable future.

      Two years ago, I bought a Q2 Monochrom after a several decade hiatus from photography. Since then, I picked up several other Leica digital (CL, SL2, M11) and film (M6 TTL) but gravitated to the Q2M most often. I only recently sold the Q2M because I pre-ordered the M11 Monochrom. I really miss the Q2M.
      While some of the features of the new Q3 are nice (e.g., USB port), the others (triple resolution, flip screen) aren’t critical for my needs.

    I needed to upgrade to a new point and shoot camera from my old Olympus. I could have bought the Q3 - but instead I got the Q2 Monochrom and have a D-Lux 8 on order for the same price as the Q3. I now have a serious photo camera and the fun family/travel/backup camera. The USB charging was the big attraction for me, but when you enjoy shooting and embrace the Liberation through Limitations these cameras provide. I went for the ultimate 2-for deal. Working within the limitations has given me new creativity and made me think about taking the photo more and brought the joy of shooting back to me. I take it on my morning exercise walks in the National Forest and you never know what opportunity you'll find. So many street photography videos for the urban shooters, but I am a nature photographer where I live and street shooting is alien to me. So your words ring true - end the megapixel madness and enjoy what the Q2 can do and embrace it and leverage it to be even more creative. Great deals can be had on Q2's to save the budget. Thanks

    The reason to go for the Q3 would be the tilt screen and the Phase detect AF.
    NOTHING ELSE for me
    Great video by the way.

    When the Q3 was announced, I sold my full frame Sony body and lenses and pre-ordered on the first day. In the third week of waiting on the backorder list I realized that a used Q2 was still lightyears ahead of what I had been using. I saved $1500 and I’m blissfully happy with this (new to me) camera!

    Got an open-box deal on my Q2 with an extra battery in April and am incredibly happy. It’s my first Leica and I’m happy it doesn’t have a tilt-screen. I love the ruggedness and with the RRS L-bracket, it’s a wonderful small tank of a camera. Thanks for the video! Incredibly happy where I am and happy for all the Q3 users. No regrets. No envy.

    Hi. I appreciate your points. I have the Q2M, which I bought used a few months ago. I’m still learning, but very pleased with the results. I also have the Fuji XT5, having had the other XTs except for the 4. I don’t need a videocentric camera, which is why I didn’t get the 4. Whether the Q2M image quality at low light is enuf in the long run to warrant carrying two cameras when I want both color and b&w remains to be seen. Right now I love the Q2M and wouldn’t go to the 3 just to get color. Thanks. Geoff

    Get a nitecore battery charger. Small enough to keep in the bag just in case. Also, the new battery for the Q3 is cheaper+higher capacity. I got one and it's my primary battery for my Q2, now, while the orig battery is the backup. Also sticking with my Q2 over the Q3. In fact I got my Q2 after all the Q3 leaks, but a couple days before the official release. I like all the things w/the Q3 except I really do not like the bulky flip screen. (I like flip screen in general, but don't like how it messes up the shape of the Q body.) We'll see what happens when the Q4 shows up. :)

    I completely agree with you on this. I've had my Q2 for over a year and it's perfect for my needs. The Q3 sensor and USB-C ports are nice touches but aren't essential enough for me to change. I would have liked the Q2 to include a tilt screen as my leg and back issues won't allow me to get down for low angle shots but, again, it's not a deal breaker. If I were to upgrade from a Q2 to another Leica it would be to an M11 not a Q3.

    I ended up getting the Q3 by signing up for stock notice on their site. It’s my first Leica and the first new camera or camera equipment in over 10 years. So the jump for me has been huuuge and very much worth it. The 60MP helps me a fair bit because I crop a lot to reframe etc. it is fantastic for my use. I legit love it.

    Warning, Happy Rant ahead!! I was a fairly early adopter of the Fuji X100 series (2013) as my EDC. Also, former Minolta film(X7, XGM), longtime Nikon digital shooter (D100, D300, D700, Z6II, Z9, and now Z8) as the workhorse/duty camera yet my everyday camera was the X100S then X100F then X100V until moving to Nikon mirrorless 2021. Tried several EDC options with Nikon Z6II to make it the EDC, short primes, pancake lens, small telescopes but no option worked as well as the X100V for my style of shooting. Bear in mind, the X100V had some annoying limitations, which is why I moved to mirrorless to address (auto focus and manual controls were chief among these). Since 2019, I have watched both the Leica M and Q series reviews and experiences. The reason that I have followed Leica is a dear friend and fellow professional photographer is a life long Leica shooter(mainly film) and has encouraged me to join team Leica for decades. So after the Q3 was announced, I pre-ordered and am awaiting the experience. The 60MP allows good flexibility to crop/compose even with the wide 28MM lens (which, by all accounts, is excellent). The ergonomics are not as preferred (the wireless hand grip will help) but the manual controls allow fast changes and feel great. I am hopeful the Q3 tradeoffs and workflow will fit my desired use case. Thanks for the great review of the Q2 and tacit encouragement. Keep pressing forward. Cheers!!

    One reason I regret I bought my Canon 6D mark ii is the tilt screen. I don't fancy it's touch feature either. Regarding more pixels, you're absolutely right, more pixels doesn't mean better photos. What matters more is the lens.

    Keep your Q2, new doesn’t necessarily mean better… I’ve been using a Leica Q-P for the pat 2 years as the “ultimate point and shoot”. It has brought joy back into my photo life. The 28mm Leica glass has a deep rendering that photographers can only dream about. I use Sony for video & work. By the way, the quality of your video is superb. Which body & lens are you using? Keep up the excellent work!

    I got my Q3. I have used many Leica, M9, M Monochrome, M262, M10 and SL2-S. All we're sold and Q3 is only one my red dot with me now. I am too old to take manual focus and too lazy to carry big and heavy SL2-S. Q3 comes with everything that I long for, auto focus, tilt screen, built-in Macro mode, small and light weight. ❤ The only things I miss are my Summilux 50mm and 35mm f1.4. I still keep both lenses.

  • @basilbrush9888
    @basilbrush9888 Год назад +2

    I purchased the Q3. It was only a few hundred dollars more than a Q2. The megapixels are more and yes you may have 47. but not 61. 61 gives you added flexibility. The files are large and very detailed. I have never ever been a tilt screen person, but after a few shoots using it, I love the tilt screen. The 8k is a nice edition but I only use the camera for photos. Its nice knowing it has a very capable system for video though should I need it. Charging via usb is perfection, been on the move where its come in handy. Suppose if you are happy with a Q2 then ok, I am a new Leica owner and to be honest glad I didn't save the money and go Q2 as I would probably be yearning for the Q3 once I seen more content.

    Totally agree. I recently bought the Q2 to use alongside my R5. The Q2 is far more resilient and weather sealed with no tilt screen and no ports. The Q3 will be more vulnerable. I also agree that 47mp is plenty…. File sizes are ok. All gets silly at 60mp. The only perk of the Q3 for me would be better autofocus but I’ve got used to using the Q2 with centre spot focus and I enjoy that. For sports and fast eye tracking etc I have the R5 with longer lenses.

    This is great food for thought. I am on two waiting lists for the Q3 but still find myself searching the classifieds for Q2 deals! As some have said below, the Q2 will likely address my needs. But FOMO and GAS is strong in this one and I can't bring myself to come off the waiting lists...not yet. To add further complication, there is every chance that a Fuji X-Pro 4 will come out early next year and if it is as expected, I'd be miffed as I'm already invested in the Fuji ecosystem. Help!!!! 😂

    Very happy with my Q2 still and all the reasons you mentioned are the same for me for not having any interest in upgrading (plus, I am broke). It is annoying having to remove the SD card every single day to download images, so I would have liked a USB-C socket for that and charging, but I will manage without for now. And yes, 60MP is insane.

    It is a bummer you just bought your Q2 December last year. So I can see you going through the stages of grief to deal with that decision in light of the new Q3. I think you make some really valid points. The tilting screen is something I can see malfunctioning and those repairs, with Leica, are bound to be really expensive and the way I see it, a tilting screen is just a fancy way of not having to kneel down. The reality is that these cameras are really expensive and I do get your point… if you already have a high megapixel count camera (the Sony), what’s the point of getting another?

  • @andrewpowell3398
    @andrewpowell3398 10 месяцев назад

    Totally agree with you on the tilt screen. Of course its useful and I have had cameras that have one and it was great, but to me it looks out of place on the Q, it spoils the whole aesthetic of the camera to me, and that's a big part of what the Q is about, the minimalist approach, the clean lines etc.

  • @moodnous

    I'm looking at the Q2 monochrom but looks like its price hasn't changed since the Q3 is out. About the only thing that I would really want in a Q3 monochrom would be the usb-c and wireless charging grip option. I completely agree about not wanting the tilt screen and in reality more ports just means more opportunity for dust/dirt to get in.

    Agree entirely; while I would love the USB-C charging and the tilt screen, I already had the Q2M for underwater BW photography (which works brilliantly because of its low light performance, no flashes, and no backscatter), and I added the Q2 for color. The Q3 does not fit the costly Subal housing, and it is doubtful that anyone will ever make a housing for the Q3. I love the Q2 and its images and the industrial design. The problem with the Q2, as many have noted, is the exposure constraints which, candidly, sucks. Thanks for the honest review.

    Hey, stumbled across this video when searching for Q3 content. Do you still feel the same 8-9 months on?
    Here’s my story- I had a Q2 which I adored, and a couple of months back I sold it and decided to go back to the X100 series with the new VI. So, that happened, and two weeks later I’d sold the VI and got a Q3, which is simply unbelievable. Everything about it is better than the Q2, especially the tilt screen which is built like a tank- no chance of it breaking.
    You also mention the 60mp files- obviously it’s triple resolution and you can get smaller files than the Q2- the versatility of it, simply the best camera I’ve ever owned and likely to be with me for a LONG time.
    I wonder if you still feel the same?

    I'm in the process of buying my first Leica. I can wait six months for the Q3 or I can have a Q2 by tomorrow morning. The ONLY feature that has me waiting for the Q3 is the tilt screen. When shooting from the hip in street photography, I think it would be great to be able to check composition by just looking down. Now . . . check with me a month from now. With no Q3 in sight, I may have changed my mind.

      Totally fair!! I can see why the tilt would be helpful in certain scenarios. You really can't go wrong with either. Leica is a slippery slope... consider yourself warned ;) Thanks for watching!

      WOW!!! You're the second person to suggest this! It's still a decent size, but anything is smaller than the one Leica sends! Thanks for watching and the tip :D

    Upgraded from Q2 - needed more mega pixels, tilt, more stops of dynamic range, longer exposure, better ISO invariance, better phone connectivity, better battery, and USB C lol. Enjoy your Q2!

    I think 60mp is too much for a 24x36 sensor; medium format, sure. The pixel density is too high and pixel pitch too small. I prefer bigger pixels. And the crippled flip screen gives little added function.

  • @davec8153
    @davec8153 11 месяцев назад

    I think the USB-C Quick Charge port alone is worth the upgrade. You basically just don't need an extra battery anymore, since the Q3 can shoot while being charged by an external battery pack through USB-C quick charge. An external battery pack is way cheaper, bigger capacity and versatile.

  • @tomscott4438
    @tomscott4438 11 месяцев назад

    As an upgrade (from the Q2) I agree, the Q3 probably doesn’t make sense. But as someone who doesn’t have a Q2, waiting for the Q3 makes sense. In three or four years, going from the Q3 to a Q4 would probably not make sense. But when that Q4 does come out, most Q2 owners will probably make that upgrade. In essence, a Q3 is 8 years (instead of four) before some “dissatisfaction” kicks in. Plus it’s a Leica, so maybe that never happens. Honestly if the deal was better on a Q2 I’d probably go for it, but the price being so close, I’m waiting.
    How do you compensate for the terrible low light and poor performance above ISO 1600?

  • @MARKLINMAN1
    @MARKLINMAN1 Год назад

    I have to agree, if you don’t own a Q2, then a Q3 makes sense, if you own a Q2 no need to upgrade. Both cams are AMAZING.

  • @fabeaux8623

    The Q3 has a significantly better processor as the Q2 used the same one as the original Q. That being said, the Q3 while being 60 megapixels, has managed to produce smaller files (by quite a bit) so that did catch my eye while looking at which I may buy next year. The price difference on a new Q3 vs a used Q2 does still boast a bigger selling point for me however so I'm leaning towards a Q2 🤗

    • @mallorydavisphotography
      @mallorydavisphotography  8 месяцев назад +1

      Fair! But the processor on the Q2 has been fine for my time with it! Get that Q2 🔥🔥🔥

    • @canyonblue737-8
      @canyonblue737-8 7 месяцев назад

      the Q2 didn't have compressed lossless RAW, probably due to the old processor... the new Q3 does have compressed lossless RAW so file size is down a lot despite the jump to 60 megapixels.

  • @AdamHouston
    @AdamHouston Год назад

    I’d resisted the Q2 for a long time, waiting to see how the Q3 would differ. I found enough to like about the Q3 that I paid the slightly higher price for it rather than the Q2. Some of the changes are not improvements for me, but just changes to tick some boxes for marketing. I am never going to touch the HDMI port, and it is highly improbable that I’ll ever shoot video, 8K or lower.
    The coloured leather that was mentioned has been an option for a few years, so if you want your Q2 “individualised” in geranio or octane or passion leather, Leica will provide the service for you.

    • @mallorydavisphotography
      @mallorydavisphotography  Год назад

      Oh i didn't know the custom colors were old news! I don't blame you for the Q3; if I didn't have the Q2 I would have certainly gone for the Q3! Thanks for watching, Adam!

    Triple Resolution technology (when u don't need the 60mpxls), Hybrid autofocus (1st time ever, 6 times the autofocus points), 5.7Mpxl EVF(!), Super convenient tilt screen for street shooting, 8k/4k60 video, Maestro IV vs Maestro II processor, LCD is almost twice the resolution, BSI Sensor (1st time ever for better lowlight), USBC and Wireless charging....The Q3 is way better than the Q2.
