I was born and raised here in the Beautiful state of West Virginia, I moved away for a few years. But I came back home. West Virginia has a lot of history and culture. A lot of people puts West Virginia down more than any other state. So I'm just saying West Virginia is the most Beautiful state and the most friendliest people.
To me Conservative and no zoning sound like Proes. I like the idea of deciding what kind of dog I want for starters. The Tractor thing, well I like to eat so the idea of having Farms around is appealing to me. Somebody has to grow the food. Deer hunting? If I had a place and time to hunt I'd probably be healthier than I am now. What's the small game hunting like? I used to Rabbit hunt when I was a teenager and miss it. I like to watch and listen to the dogs.

I love Martinsburg Wv. I moved from the PG County area never will go back. I never had problems with bugs. Only stink bugs around the garage but I used a very good spray to get rid of them. They have built up in Martinsburg it is more to do here now.
I’ve moved away from WV twice. Once to New Hampshire for 5 years, and once to Florida for 2 years after retiring. Both times…. Once the novelty of a new place wore off, and we went real estate hunting I was homesick for WV. You can buy a beautiful 3 bedroom, 2 bath brick home for under $200.00 in a nice area. We pay 1/2 of what we payed in rent in Florida for a house payment here. We love the kick back,relaxing lifestyle here, compared to the rat race fast paced Florida. Driving here is relaxing versus chaotic in Florida.
it's not that we don't want people to move here we just don't want the wrong kind of people to move here like drug dealers or people who want to do the gang thing like you see in bigger city's and people that steal.but really it has already been ruined because we already have started having drive by shooting 's and Mexican gang on the south side of town and there has been a huge jump in crime 10 years ago we didn't have all this going on.
We plan on coming home to WV after having been gone since 2006. We lived down a holler back then and hope to again. I hope it's not getting crowded. There's nothing better than sitting out on the porch on a quiet evening after a hard day, especially late summer, early fall.

We live in Martinsburg and have high speed internet - Comcast cable. But if you head further into rural WV, it gets spotty - at least for cable. We have a lot of clients from the DC area looking to move here (who can you blame them). Mostly telecommuters and they need high speed connections.

My husband’s family has been in mineral/grant county area since the 1780s. My family’s from Harrisonburg, VA and we’re over in Hampshire county cuz my husband works out of Winchester. We’d love to move into grant or tucker but he doesn’t want to take an OTR driving job while the kids are little. I’d never leave our cabin near Harman if I didn’t have to. I love it. I’m tryin to get so deep in the hills they aint ever gonna find us 😂 my mother in law is from MD and she still struggles with livin up here. She’s not made for WV

I've visited WV a couple of times and fell in love. I'm from NJ but am seriously considering making the move. I've always been a simple person who greatly appreciates the outdoors and I'd love for my 7 yr old to be able to grow in WV. I'm also an exterminator so the bugs are not a problem,!
It seems like Nj people want to leave to go to WV. My bf and I were looking into martinsburg, where he lived for ten years- now in Elkins. I live in NJ (insanely expensive) He accepted a job in West NJ in December (very rural) but last minute changed his mind bc its too expensive. I'm afraid if I go out there I'll have no community and no job opportunities. Maybe I'm wrong. Now we are broken up, aren't getting engaged or married. Its been hellish.

@@AliciaLLang Alicia, the issue with the housing market here right now is that there are not a lot of houses for sale. Prices haven't dropped that much like they have in other parts of the country. It looks like more homes will appear on the market this spring and summer. If Martinsburg is a place you want to live, I'd make that the priority. We love living here. The housing market will wax and wane so trying to predict the housing market is not a good guide for when to move. Home prices over the long haul go up. Life is short. Live where you will be happy. Hope I'm not sounding preachy
If you live in the more rural areas you may encounter tractors, but again, all of WV is not the same….couldn’t tell you the last tractor i had to follow down the street in Putnam County… and zoning is a thing in some areas…and i believe Bugs are a nationwide thing…lol.
Sounds like you need to go to DC, this state has mountains, not hills, this state has a lot of farm land. We also have a lot a water areas, that is the reason for the deer, the bugs, and the roads that have a lot of curves, We have good people in this state that would help anyone in need. Could this state be better in ways, of course, but so couldn't every state.
West Virgina MUST have been good for you financially ELSE why haven't you moved? Also when you moved there couldn't you tell right away it wasn't the city? I am proud of West Virginia, it IS indeed Wonderful AND Wild. One of the countys in WV was settled by my family before the First Constitution was signed. But you are correct, the roughedness of most of the State is only for those who love nature, and aren't entharlled with the spit-shined.
If you are retired or can work from home (and have high speed internet), WV might be for you. If you need a job and are not in a high demand occupation or profession, you'll probably have a very hard time finding work. In addition to tractors, a lot of people want to drive way too fast or way too slow. Most of the roads are windy and I once spent the better part of an hour behind an old lady doing 20 mph, and she would slow down for curves. I left WV when I was younger, and crime was practically nonexistent. WV has been hard-hit by the opioid crisis, which helps fuel crime.
Hey Dutch. We’re in the eastern panhandle and there are parts still pretty rural- but several large companies have moved in so things are better on the job front. Roads are a bit windy. 😊

We left in 2006 for the west coast, mostly due to the economy. We never stopped being homesick and plan on moving back. The main thing keeping us away is the job market and the dismal hourly pay. Have things gotten any better?
Unfortunately not but I believe everyone in the US is struggling in one way or another. I took a job working out of state 4 days a week, for $17 an hr and my husband works for a Tree company making $19 an hour. Fast food and retail stores are paying up to $12 - $15 an hour but you never know how many hrs you'll be working. The prices of gas,food,rent and electricity is hurting the middle class and I can only pray for everyone within the poverty range and below.

Job Market? Up until the last 18 months when everybody across the country including myself quit working I took retirement before everything went south saw it coming and got out. Up until then mention the word "job" in West Virginia it was a GREAT way of getting shot. Shit was so bad you DIDN'T say the word "job" especially in Southern West Virginia. That was no secret. Jobs were so few and far between Jobs was a subject you didn't bring up, and everybody knew that. Now it doesn't matter anymore. Don't come here thinking your going to land some corporate position. its not only not going to happen, you'll end up pissed off just like everybody else. End up packing your shit up and leave and never come back. It's an all too common theme here in West Virginia.
Fairmont is still a low crime area for the most part. Just pick a nice neighborhood and stay out of the main part of town because there is a lot of homeless people 😢 on the streets. There is some very good smaller communities surrounding Fairmont that have that small town appeal and are very safe, nothing like the West Coast. It really boils down to what you like or don’t like I suppose. Plenty of rural areas to choose from also.
There nothing wrong with West Virginia. If you don't like it there move out. I was born a raised in West Virginia. There not that many bugs. There bugs in all the states. West Virginia is beautiful. Go back where you belong.

We have a house in WV "way out in the country". Star Link Internet is available. We have that and it's every bit as fast as any other broadband in the state.
Sounds great to me. I am in high taxed New Jersey and looking to get out. I am in a rural part of the state, and had to laugh about the tractors. We have them here too. A lot of farms up this way. I have to ask .I have heard that there are problems with well water out that way. We have iron and some wells out this way have Sulphur. I am lucky and have good water it has some iron and it's hard but taste great. Is there anything unusual about West Virginia well water?
Hi John -- I'm amazed at the property taxes in New Jersey -- people I've talked to from out that way pay almost as much as their mortgage payment. Taxes are lower in WV. Well water depends on where you live. Some areas you don't need filtration or treatment -- but others you do. There's nothing unusual about WV well water.
I've drank West Virginia well water for the last 60 years off and on. The water is great it just all depends on your filtration system and they have gotten much better. We used to bottle spring water in Clay County that bubbled up out of the ground from an underground spring. We bottled it year round it was ice cold crystal clear and pure water. The shit coming out of our faucets(city water) it's gotten so bad you almost can't take a shower with it anymore.

Stephanie I have not seen any kind of the racism you mention in this area - the Eastern Panhandle. Shepherdstown is a great little town -- it's a University town. Shepherd University. The good thing about this area is that we are close to the DC/Baltimore area so you can live in a less congested area but when you want big city stuff, it's about an hour and a half a way. More cons, the state is quite poor and poor communities have high crime rates. West Virginia is not the highest state in crime but its well up on the list of states that have higher crime rates violent and nonviolent crime.

West Virginians are friendly and good neighbors. They are also used to running their own lives. I wouldn't go in to try to "revise" the place or to "smarten" them up. That isn't acceptable. My Daddy moved us out when my brothers got old enough to go to work. He worked in the coal mines and since that was the only work available that paid well, he did not want his sons working in the mines and knew they would. They did well, very well. But to tell the truth I miss the beauty of those mountains. Just not the snow.
Our property taxes are becoming excessive now. With all these new housing developments and people moving in from DC, Maryland, Northern Virginia. I grew up on the Shenandoah River a beautiful place until the crime of DC stated coming in by the thousands every weekend. We're working on getting the riff raff off those River banks .

If you live in the more rural areas you may encounter tractors, but again, all of WV is not the same….couldn’t tell you the last tractor i had to follow down the street in Putnam County… and zoning is a thing in some areas…and i believe Bugs are a nationwide thing…lol.

Sounds like you need to go to DC, this state has mountains, not hills, this state has a lot of farm land. We also have a lot a water areas, that is the reason for the deer, the bugs, and the roads that have a lot of curves, We have good people in this state that would help anyone in need. Could this state be better in ways, of course, but so couldn't every state.
West Virgina MUST have been good for you financially ELSE why haven't you moved? Also when you moved there couldn't you tell right away it wasn't the city? I am proud of West Virginia, it IS indeed Wonderful AND Wild. One of the countys in WV was settled by my family before the First Constitution was signed. But you are correct, the roughedness of most of the State is only for those who love nature, and aren't entharlled with the spit-shined.

If you need a job and are not in a high demand occupation or profession, you'll probably have a very hard time finding work. In addition to tractors, a lot of people want to drive way too fast or way too slow. Most of the roads are windy and I once spent the better part of an hour behind an old lady doing 20 mph, and she would slow down for curves. I left WV when I was younger, and crime was practically nonexistent. WV has been hard-hit by the opioid crisis, which helps fuel crime.
Hey Dutch. We’re in the eastern panhandle and there are parts still pretty rural- but several large companies have moved in so things are better on the job front. Roads are a bit windy. 😊
West Virginia is the only state I want to live if someone doesn’t like WV ok no big deal. I have high speed internet that work well. Almost all states in remote areas have no or poor internet reception.

You need to consider the whole state before you criticize one area of our beautiful state. Saying, "the more west you get, the more rural you get," is not necessarily true. Tourism is big in WV and there are quite a bit of different opportunities that you wouldn't necessarily elsewhere. Different states offer different advantages. So research your facts before you live only 20 years in WV.

Most West Virginians do not consider the Eastern Panhandle as a true part of this state anyway, DC kind of ruins that area. Thank goodness for the mountains separating us from the swamp creatures.
A working couple could buy a house in M-burg, build up benefits in DC, commute in the middle of the night, and then when they retire, just stop commuting and have their retirements paid for. Also, there's a congressman who got defeated in MD, got elected in WV, and one day he might be a senator, Alex Mooney.

We left in 2006 for the west coast, mostly due to the economy. We never stopped being homesick and plan on moving back. The main thing keeping us away is the job market and the dismal hourly pay. Have things gotten any better?
Unfortunately not but I believe everyone in the US is struggling in one way or another. I took a job working out of state 4 days a week, for $17 an hr and my husband works for a Tree company making $19 an hour. Fast food and retail stores are paying up to $12 - $15 an hour but you never know how many hrs you'll be working. The prices of gas,food,rent and electricity is hurting the middle class and I can only pray for everyone within the poverty range and below.
If you have the ability to work from home and make decent money it could be really good.

Job Market? Up until the last 18 months when everybody across the country including myself quit working I took retirement before everything went south saw it coming and got out. Up until then mention the word "job" in West Virginia it was a GREAT way of getting shot. Shit was so bad you DIDN'T say the word "job" especially in Southern West Virginia. That was no secret. Jobs were so few and far between Jobs was a subject you didn't bring up, and everybody knew that. Now it doesn't matter anymore.
Don't come here thinking your going to land some corporate position. its not only not going to happen, you'll end up pissed off just like everybody else. End up packing your shit up and leave and never come back. It's an all too common theme here in West Virginia.

Fairmont is still a low crime area for the most part. Just pick a nice neighborhood and stay out of the main part of town because there is a lot of homeless people 😢 on the streets. There is some very good smaller communities surrounding Fairmont that have that small town appeal and are very safe, nothing like the West Coast. It really boils down to what you like or don’t like I suppose. Plenty of rural areas to choose from also.

Sounds great to me. I am in high taxed New Jersey and looking to get out. I am in a rural part of the state, and had to laugh about the tractors. We have them here too. A lot of farms up this way. I have to ask .I have heard that there are problems with well water out that way. We have iron and some wells out this way have Sulphur. I am lucky and have good water it has some iron and it's hard but taste great. Is there anything unusual about West Virginia well water?
Hi John -- I'm amazed at the property taxes in New Jersey -- people I've talked to from out that way pay almost as much as their mortgage payment. Taxes are lower in WV. Well water depends on where you live. Some areas you don't need filtration or treatment -- but others you do. There's nothing unusual about WV well water.
I've drank West Virginia well water for the last 60 years off and on.
The water is great it just all depends on your filtration system and they have gotten much better.
We used to bottle spring water in Clay County that bubbled up out of the ground from an underground spring. We bottled it year round it was ice cold crystal clear and pure water. The shit coming out of our faucets(city water) it's gotten so bad you almost can't take a shower with it anymore.

Stephanie I have not seen any kind of the racism you mention in this area - the Eastern Panhandle. Shepherdstown is a great little town -- it's a University town. Shepherd University. The good thing about this area is that we are close to the DC/Baltimore area so you can live in a less congested area but when you want big city stuff, it's about an hour and a half a way. More cons, the state is quite poor and poor communities have high crime rates. West Virginia is not the highest state in crime but its well up on the list of states that have higher crime rates violent and nonviolent crime.
Depends on where in WV. I’ve done some research on the eastern Panhandle and except for a few spots crime is pretty low.

Hi Jamel. It's a little slower pace here than you'll find in larger cities -- and friendlier. We moved from the DC area so I speak from experience. Are you thinking of moving to this area?
West Virginians are friendly and good neighbors. They are also used to running their own lives. I wouldn't go in to try to "revise" the place or to "smarten" them up. That isn't acceptable. My Daddy moved us out when my brothers got old enough to go to work. He worked in the coal mines and since that was the only work available that paid well, he did not want his sons working in the mines and knew they would. They did well, very well. But to tell the truth I miss the beauty of those mountains. Just not the snow.

Our property taxes are becoming excessive now. With all these new housing developments and people moving in from DC, Maryland, Northern Virginia. I grew up on the Shenandoah River a beautiful place until the crime of DC stated coming in by the thousands every weekend. We're working on getting the riff raff off those River banks .
