Just picked up my 3rd backup bottle of Knob Creek 12 Year. Found it for $62 in Indiana, so I could not pass it up. Also love the Knob Single Barrel store picks. 🥃
We usually really enjoy Jacob's Well, and while KC12 hasn't wowed us in blinds before, it usually does perform better than this which is an indicator that it may have been our palates on this particular day as mentioned. Definitely important to note and highlight since days like this can happen to us all. Cheers and thanks for watching Daven!
Pasteboard is an indicator of an off day for tastebuds, perhaps ? KC12 is far above glue & wood dust…. plausibly an allergy season reaction? A good rye is always a better choice KC 12 is a go to of Bourbon for me.
It's done quite well for us in other tastings too. Perhaps an off day, or perhaps our bottle has went south. It is interesting that both of these come across a lot better when we're not blind, but that could speak to our inherent bias as well.
We don't disagree with you in the least. 12 years for $70 is great value to be sure, and we do tend to enjoy it a lot more than this. All of us have off days for our palates sometimes. We'll drop KC12 into a head-to-head against KC9 and Jacob's Well into a head-to-head against Baker's 7 to give both a chance at retribution.
I wonder if this is a symptom of batch filming. What do you guys do to reset your palates between shoots? Maybe a video idea. What are good foods to pair with bourbons? How to do a proper whiskey tasting?
This was our second head-to-head for the day, after Sazerac vs Michter's Rye, so two low proofers that didn't exactly impress. You'd think these two would shine like all-stars after that first head-to-head. We usually take several minutes between head-to-heads, clear our palates with lots of water, and don't start the next video until we feel like our palates are ready to go. If we feel like our palates aren't ready we'll shoot a Tuesday "talking head" video where we don't drink anything between head-to-heads.
@Stuff & Whiskey Please know I day this with all the love! None of us are "experts" and it is all part of the fun. Certain days, our palates are affected by certain things. Y'all keep up with great content!
Oh, no! Y'all are hating on Knob Creek lately😂 I've never had Hardin's Creek but Knob Creek 12 is one of my ALL-TIME favorite bottles! Wins in blinds all the time for me. It's a 60 doll hair bottle here and I think it's 100 percent worth it.
We usually like both of these quite a bit as well. Jacob's Well has impressed in previous blinds, and while KC12 hasn't wowed us in blinds before, it usually does perform better than this, which is an indicator that it may have been our palates on this particular day as mentioned. Definitely important to note and highlight since days like this can happen to us all. Cheers and thanks for watching Michele!
Erin, I love you. Keep saying exactly what you think, wether it be cardboard box or stinky feet. The honesty is appreciated and most helpful. Im surprised at your reactions to KC 12. It's become a staple in my cabinet. Never had the Hardins but at 150 it it does need to knock my socks off.
Interesting, I bought my first bottle of knob creek 12 because it was the last one and thought I’d give it a try without knowing anything about it, I thought it was delicious and smelt amazing. Then I looked up videos and saw nothing but great reviews that aligned with my experience. I guess that’s why there are so many options out there to choose from, we’re all different, I mean I hated four roses small batch select 😅. Anyway I’ll keep buying knob creek 12 over and over.
Thinking we need to do a KC9 vs KC12 and Jacob's Well vs Baker's 7 for the blind head-to-head pool to give both of these a chance to redeem themselves a bit on a day where our palates are more on point.
@@stuffandwhiskey Those would be good matchups. Now that I've tried the Baker's 7 (loved it) and both the KC 9 and 12, I'd like to try Booker's and the KC Single Barrel Reserve.
I too was surprised by the result for the KC 12. I have it and a 120 proof 9 year on the shelf but also realized that I rarely reach for them. The 9 is probably over 1½ years old and still ⅔ full. The 12 year has probably only had 2 pours from it and it's at lease 4 ~ 5 months old. They're decent but I don't find myself reaching for them.
I like KC12 a lot but I do keep 9yr picks at 120proof on hand at all times... to me one of the best bang for your buck bourbons out there, along with JD SB BP and EC BP and of course Rare Breed. Kinda my mount rushmore of Bourbons...curious what would be your top 4 or Mount Rushmore for under $100 an honrable mention of mine is SmokeWagon UNUF but the latest batches just not as good and vary batch to batch to much these days.
100% agreed on the recent SW UCUF batches being a downgrade over previous batches. The Mount Rushmore of bourbon under $100 is a super interesting concept for a video. We may do that. Off the top of our heads we wouldn't disagree with your lineup at all though. KC 120 SiB picks, Rare Breed, ECBP, and JDSBBP would be hard to argue with for those that enjoy higher proof.
At first I was thinking Erin was being a bit harsh but thinking about it, I kind of have to agree, at least a bit. A good nose can punch my score up a fair few points if the palette is good. But a muted/uninteresting nose won't result in me docking the same number of points down, again if the palette is good. So, a good amount of upside, but not too much downside. How I think of the finish is the opposite. I'll add a few points if the finish is good, but if the finish is bad, I tend to dock points from the score more harshly.
@@stuffandwhiskey Spot on. I've tried things that didn't sit well on the palate on a given day and come back to it days or weeks later and loved it. Everything we consume on any given day affects how we perceive flavors. Love what you guys do. Keep up the great work! Cheers!
I had a bottle of Jacob's well in my hand at retail and put it back, really regret it. Im a big KC fan and the 12 year was a bit of a dissapointment because it seemed to round off all the edges of the 9 year. Between the two I'd grab the KC 9 single barrels over the 12 until I cam find a 12 yr 120 proof.

Some days it’s just like that. We’ll definitely be putting both back into head-to-heads and expect that they’ll fare much better the next time they pop up.
It was surprising for sure. Not that KC12 has blown us away in blinds before, but it usually does better than this. Between our palates being a little off and coming fresh off the heels of Jacob's Well, KC12 had a rough outing, but it's still great value for the age. We'll definitely have to get it in another head-to-head in hopes that it can redeem itself.
Erin - stop chewing on cardboard before tasting and KC 12 would taste way better!! I have had 3 bottles of it over the past year and I absolutely love it! I get more oak which does mute some of the flavor... but it's still really good to me.

I've not had the Knob Creek 12 since I can't afford it, but it seems odd that a mere three more years in the barrel would turn good Knob Creek 9 into mediocre bourbon. I know that tasting blind can bring out reality in interesting ways, but I also know that many factors can make whisky taste different than it normally would. Great comment, and while on paper you're not wrong about three more years not making a huge difference (especially between 9 years and 12 years), barrel selection and blending do play a large part as well. Beam likely pulls "better" barrels for their 12 year releases. It's possible our bottle has gone south or we were just having an off day... likely the latter considering they both came across less flavorful than they normally do.
It do be like that sometimes, which is always a bit of a bummer. We can get you a sample of our KC12 bottle to see if you feel the same way. Could've just been that batch of KC12 or it very well may be the product's profile altogether for you.

That's the easy answer, but we don't think that's it. Far more likely is that it just wasn't hitting our palates right that day, which isn't highlighted enough (but we're glad this video is able to call some attention to how your palate can differ on different days).
Do I even know you?!
That's a fair question. We're not even sure we know ourselves after this one!
Man, you guys are so far off lol. You prefer kool-aid?
Blinds keep us so far off but therein lies the fun. Cheers and thanks for watching. 🥃
