That's an excellent explanation of the matter. A patty on the top bars a month before the first natural pollen is available does appear to help colonies get off to a better start. And it makes a big difference with small or weak colonies due to the very reasons you've cited. Thanks for posting; definitely will be sharing this one with some newbies.
We went from beach weather to the freezer back to warm, and now back to the freezer. Located in Northeast OK. I fed "supplement" for 2 days. What's your suggestion, wait for 60 degrees again?
What are those plastic bottom boards in the background? I'm looking for something like that. Trying to justify the price increase over wood. Appreciate your content.
Hey Layne Knight. These are Apimaye bottom boards with their awesome pollen trap. They close easily and therefore make moving bees much easier and safer since they still have plenty of ventilation. Here is a video I did on them ruclips.net/video/QCP28HKivrY/видео.htmlsi=qt0m91MOhbpl1w5D
I’m really confused though like I’m starting my first hive in April but why do I need to feed them pollen. How do bees survive in the wild? I plan on leaving them adequate honey for food but shouldn’t they be stocking up on their own pollen?
Way more bees die in the wild than survive and some years are easier than others for bees. Like I said in the video sometimes feeding is unnecessary and some years it can be extremely helpful. The wild can be both benevolent and brutal depends on the year. Have fun!

I agree 100% Kamon Tools are meant for a purpose, our bees will tell us what they need when they need it and when they don't.👍
Starting to bloom here in NC also! They were all over the sub last week and wont touch it this week! Love it!!
Pretty early on the maple pollen. You can learn a lot from when they take pollen sup or sugar syrup and when they dont.
