  • It's a pleasure to share my experience of Sculpturedale with you, which I enjoyed during a recent @GardenConservancy Open Garden Day. Sculpturedale is four acres of gardens surrounding a house built in 1776 and barns and outbuildings.
A delightful and distinctive feature of this private garden in Kent, CT, owned by Barbara and Denis Curtiss, is the sculpture enlivening the scene, all made by Denis.
Denis' unique sculptural style involves steel or bronze seamlessly welded into deceptively light and lively dancers, gymnasts, and wild and domestic animals. These pieces exude joy and have attracted collectors from around the country and beyond.
When the Curtiss' began clearing the property of brambles in 1993, the land indicated what would best suit its various natural areas: sun, shade, wet, dry, hilly, rocky, etc. Each area has been planted around existing features of walls, stumps, banks, buildings, rocks, marsh, woods, pond, lawn.
Originally designed to showcase sculpture made here, the garden has developed distinct interest in its own right, where a large variety of perennials, shrubs, and trees are planted to enjoy in all seasons. No deer fencing and no irrigation mean natives and organics rule. All work is done by the owners.
Visitors are invited to walk the paths established throughout, to enjoy the life-size steel sculpture, and to visit the studio where the art is constructed. Among many areas to enjoy are the primrose path, woodland walk, fern ramble, pollinator patch, wetland wander, conifer corner, shade bank, and sun border. In the later summer garden there is angelica, clethra, ligularia, hydrangea, cardinal flower, kirengeshoma, nicotiana, and many more highlights of unusual plants.
