The people who insist on hating him really need to rethink their views. This is what America needs. It’s something we used to admire, now people w high school diplomas call him “stupid”. If he’s stupid, what the hell am I? They say he just bought companies and isn’t part of the real work…let’s say that’s true, it’s not, but if it were, you’re removing the fact that leadership matters. These motor changes reminded me of a BMW commercial during the 1990s. The BMW engine was known for less wiring, tubing, and clutter. Simple designs mean easy debugging when an issue is found! This looks like an engineering dream as the end result is cheaper, and the accounting department had nothing to do with this achievement! The longer you can keep from being associated with the John Deere direction, the better. Nothing Breaks like a Deere! If the ship is upgraded to a 12M diameter, will the launch pad be able to handle the extra erosion? I can't wait to see the variant Starships designs for different sized payloads! It would be cool to build a space station out of starships.
Less mass means less manufacturing cost. That and increased fuel efficiency means less travel cost. Finally, the simplification makes the engine more scalable, faster manufacturing time, etc. oh, lets not forget the engine shatters competition.
Less mass means less material is used, but 3D metal printing uses metal raw material that is more costly per pound, and the production process is costly. This was done to reduce cost over the life of the engine, not necessarily to reduce cost of production alone.
Thank you, Elon, for making America great again (and saving us the pathetic embarrassment of having to buy Russian engines and/or hitch a ride on Russian spacecraft).

I can't get over how clean looking and devoid of plumbing that Raptor 3 is compared to their earlier generation of Raptors. Elon really does put his money where his mouth in on taking extreme measures for eliminating complexity, weight and failure points.
I am really impressed with the numbers and simplification of the Raptor 3! Seems spaceX has accomplished so much in such a short period of time!! The weight savings and thrust upgrade will allow them to reduce the amount of engines on super heavy. Instead of 33 they could have 30, or maybe 27! making the rocket a lot lighter.
@@brettbuck7362 How do you figure? The Saturn V can carry the same amount to orbit as the starship, yet the starship is recoverable and reusable at that payload amount. If they do an expendable mission the starship can carry about twice as much, with new more efficient engines widening the gap even more.
@@Lithane97 You missed the OP point, they were proclaiming the breakthough of bigger engines reducing the complexity. Compare a 5- big engine Saturn V to a USSR N-1 (which Musk and company copied to come up with Starship). The USSR had the same idea, we have good little engines that are easy to design, lets just use 30 of them. The USA instead built bigger engines to simplify the system, it was hard to design, but ultimately was 100% successful instead of 100% failures. All the other stuff - including recovering the boosters by landing them- was around long before SpaceX - but then, as now, cost them too much throw weight. None of this stuff is new.

Now, everybody gets it on simplification in designing things... Simple things function well.. All the other Space companies have a problem, they all need new engines to compete, and SpaceX is several years ahead of them on engine designs. Gotta admit, thats the nicest rocket engine I've ever seen. Bet DOD is slobbering looking at that... They avoided getting involved in SLS, and now have an opportunity to have a friendly chat with Elon, about maybe producing a few extras of those Raptor 3's... Basically we have entered the fabrication age of space vehicles, and we have the engine to power everything imaginable between Earth and orbit and beyond... And its gonna get better... And from now on, parts count is the Mantra of the Engines designers of planet Earth.

After that, it will be undeniable... a few early bugs, then should begin to exceed even Merlins... If that happens, it will be exponential eyebrow raising in the industry. I know of at least two more that can drop parts count by 5X and maybe 20X... Its a deep rabbit hole. I suspect its possible to build a system to power a ship that only has maybe one moving part other than valves and maybe roller bearings, and the combustion chambers might only count 3 or4 for a yuge ship. And still not limit out on the air infiltration at the bell edges. Sounds impossible, but its not, we just have to see how far they get. Fun part though, is every rocket engine designer on the planet is Groking Raptor 3 now, and realizing what the future of side pump one lunger engines looks like. If only we could get a video of the Chinese engineer's reactions, or the Russians that spit on Elon's shoes and suggested we use broomsticks... 🤣 Its fun being American...
