Charles Barkley consistently was one of the top five players in the NBA from 1986-87 to 1993-94, winning the league MVP in 1993. It is fair to say Barkley was no worse than the third-best player in the NBA behind Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon during that span.
Even when Larry Bird and Magic Johnson were playing in the late 1980s, Barkley was no less than the fifth-best player in the NBA. Shannon Sharpe is downplaying Barkley's status as one of the best power forwards in NBA history.

deharleyva I completely disagree. Personal attacking someone's personal life is not the same as debating and being critical of someone's way of sports play. It's not like Lebron has been quiet about his frustrations either so expect people to criticize if you make statements to the media that come across as being whiny; you are the supposed best player in the world with a superstar team of your own playing in the weak east. Of course people will be critical if you come across as being a crybaby. If he attacked Charles by dissing him from not having a better career or didn't win a championship ring and called him a big baby than that is fair. But if you trying to convince me that attacking someone's personal life and private life over basketball comments is fair game then that's not gonna happen. This just proves lebron is legit a crybaby and it must be true what Charles is saying if it got this reaction from lebron. Anyone who attacks someone in a personal level like that automatically loses the argument.

Barkley was talking about basketball, and Lebron responded by talking about off-the-court (personal ) issues. I know y'all like Lebron, but sometimes let's be fair. It's like saying to someone: you need to improve your free throw shooting and the person responds: who are you to criticize my basketball skills and you can't even take care of your family? That's what Lebron did.

Shannon completely missed the point - and was incredibly disrespectful towards barkley - lebron has no justifiable reason to make it personal - when all barkley did was state facts - which again - the cavs have been satisfying lebrons every needs. He just got korver not long ago. That's true. I have no idea why shannon even brought up barkleys commitment to the game - why he brought up barkley joining houston - when that team was already full of players past their prime - etc etc. What's up with that? - this dude seems to have some beef agaisn't barkley - that was unneccesary. The topic here is - why does lebron keep whining? if he is the best player in the world why is he constantly begging for more help? - that is nothing but TRUE criticism. And that's that. Lebron has no reason to complain about such - and much less take shots at barkley for things out of context.

Yet their not saying things to the media. Yet the best player in the world is. In the 70s, 80s and 90s when Charles Barkley played every team had superstars and every team was in contention to make the playoffs now there are a few superstars in the league that separates them from all the other players and lebron wants them all. That's what Charles was talking about. Barkley joined another team to compete against all the other teams because his team was not even close to being in contention. Lebron wants things easy. I can list how many superstars were in his era. In lebron's era you can count them in one hand. That's why Jordan winning 6 in a row is that special. There were a lot of great "TEAMS" in the Jordan era. To win three was special, no less in a row.

Charles did compete. He didn't have help in Philly. He joined a team that was good in the early 80s. By the time he got their, their window was shut. He then proceeded to, like LeBron, carry his garbage team to the playoffs every year. Then he finally did go to Phoenix to play with some better players in his prime. Not Hakeem and Drexler, but Dan Majerle, KJ, Dumas and some other solid basketball players. He won MVP that year. Was in the running pretty much every year in Philly but needed some help. He then proceeded to essentially match Michael Jordan's numbers in the finals. KJ didn't really show up to par. He carried them with huge performances in the playoffs just to get them there. Then they choked. Then yeah he fell apart a bit in Phoenix. Then and injured, old Barkley joined Hakeem and Drexler. In much the way Malone and Payton joined the Lakers past their prime. Have some respect Barkley was a great player. What he did was not the same. He was traded to Phoenix. Never left them hung out to dry to go play with Jordan or Drexler in their prime. He wanted to just have a normal playoff caliber team and lead it. It's not the same as wanting a regular playoff team and instead deciding to join forces with probably the 3rd or 4th best player in the league and then another top 15 player. Barkley's comments are warranted because he used to have high demands as well. However, when his teams would lose, he would take the blame. He even said on Open Court once "we had Jordan in 93. I was ready, but some of our guys were nervous and I didn't do a good enough job of getting them involved, helping them relax etc." That is EXACTLY what happened this year. And maybe, like Barkley, it will take LeBron some time to admit that "Hey I should have talked to Love, Thompson, Deron Williams, Shumpert and Korver and gotten them to relax and play better" We aren't supposed to knock LeBron off the court, but what about a few steps off the court on the bench. Or in the locker room. There's more to being a good teammate than making the right pass. You can't keep throwing the ball to these guys and expecting them to magically make shots. Give Love the ball on the block. Let Deron Williams bring the ball up and make some plays. Sometimes not being at the center of every single play would actually help his teammates get in rhythm. People don't understand that though. If you only trust your teammates when you're the one passing them the ball, is that really trust? Let them play their games. They aren't just there to spot up for 3 and help your flashy assist numbers or move out of the way so you can grab rebounds to pad your stats and then get torched on ESPN for not grabbing enough rebounds. People call Westbrook a stat padder, but how about LeBron as a stat padder? He was afraid to beat Golden State, so he went out and tried to get triple doubles to look like he did everything he could. He needed to do much more off the court like Barkley was saying. LeBron should listen to Barkley, because he's made similar mistakes. He knows what he's talking about.
