- The Skink in War Thunder is finally here! The Skink is a Canadian SPAA that has been added to the British Tech Tree in War Thunder.
The Skink is a Sherman Hull that has been fitted with a QUAD 20mm turret capable of ripping apart any aircraft that dares to get close. The only issue is, they have to be close because the cannons velocity drops of significantly over great distances.
The Skink was added at 4.7 Battle Rating where it feels a little out of place. You can't damage most ground vehicles from the sides or even from behind making it pretty defenceless against ground units. The good news is, your crew can't be straffed by small calibre machineguns from planes making you at least survivable in that setting.
Overall, it feels a bit awkward to play due to this fact and most tanks that catch you off guard even at range won't have a tough time dealing with you.
Still, it's pretty fun as a fly swatter! :)

Skink fact: In real life by the time it was introduced, the allies didn't even need SPAAs so the Skink became the best possible anti-infantry vehicle

I think the big advantage of this thing is it can actually survive a head-on with most planes, unlike most other british SPAA
With stuff like the Yster and Crusader AA mk 2 you always die if a plane decides to attack you, either because you lack armour or you have weak armour.
All SPAA you mean. Nothing really except Kugel has similar armour. The rest are paper even the higher tier stuff.
Skink might be the best pre-missile thunder CAS SPAA in the game IMO

It's based on the Grizzly I. A licensed built Canadian version of the M4A1.

Yeah, although I dont really worry about it when CCs dont realize it because it's almost exactly the same thing.
Technically, it's on the Grizzly hull, which was a sub-variant of the Sherman built in Canada by Montreal Locomotive Works. The differences were primarily internal, though externally they continued to use the cast hulls even well after the welded hulls came into use.

the best thing about the skink is that its immune to machine guns, low pen cannons and overpressure so planes have to use ordnance to damage you

Solid shot because when the brits did tests the APHE and solid shot did just as much damage and APHE didnt magically explode in a sphere. And APHE has the chance of being a dud while losing mass and penetration performance vs solid shot.
Solid shot used to be super strong in WT like 4 years ago. Today it's just a shadow of its former self.
I think that this is why they didn't develop APHEs for the 17pdr, since It was made for high penetration.

APHE is very useful against more lightly armored vehicles, since spalling will probably not be enough to kill the crew. So, early-mid war.

Not all? No* AA vehicles should be good at tank killing, I think. If you can give Mosquitos and other planes 45minute fuel load to balance them away from out flying nimble single engine fighters performance, you can balance AAs with autocannons to do just the job they were made for.
The SKINK fascinates me, but only because it looks like it was a Sherman test tube baby that had its 75mm squished into four 20mms

I haven't played in a couple of years but when I did I always found any british AA before the Falcon to be worthless. They were super hard to hit anything with and even when you did hit they just sparked and did almost no damage.
Also, it looked like you got 2 assists for the I-15. I didn't even know that was possible.
You can get a kill assist the normal way, and then you can also get a kill assist by knocking out the enemy aircraft’s pilot. I don’t know if it’s intentional or a bug, but it’s a useful tactic in Air RB to get some extra rewards
I think Phalanxing a PE-8 bomb is a pretty clutch move, imagine how upset the bomber was

I guess a good thing about it, and the dual 20mm Crusader AA, is you look like a regular tank from the air, I find occasionally you get some guy trying to strafe thinking you cant shoot back
The Skink is a weird boy in AA terms, but weird in a good way. Yeah, the shell velocity is low, but unlike most AA it can weather most ground fire at the ranges it's fire doesn't effectively reach, and it's often a "bomb or no-go" vehicle for planes to deal with. If it got the same penetration as the Wirblewind's cannons, it'd be absolutely perfect at it's 4.7 BR, but right now it probably belongs juuuuuust a touch lower alongside the Ystervark at 4.3. I mean, it's the same gun as the AEC AA has, right? Just more of them on a better protected chassis.

It may not be the strafe-immune wirbelwind that we hoped it would be, but it still IMO beats the pants off of all the other low BR British SPAAs.

Me, a Germany-main player who plays also USA going top down annihilating Ostwinds, Wirbelwinds and Sd. Kfz 251/21: Yeah, definitely better.
The Skink works pretty good for when you get 3 or 4 of the planes coming in to take out the AA, I've got 3 on the first pass and then the 4rth turned into make a second pass, He made it about half way thru the turn. It can switch between targets real quick, that's a big help. Great video. o7
The British 20mm used to have 48mm of pen, but gaijin nerfed it to 42 for no reason! 😃
De Marre formula. Only country that benefited from the De Marre nerf was... Russia. It's unhistorical AF.

Not for no reason cuz the Polsten 20mm are a Polish design. For the same reason there is not a single Polish build Plane ship or tank in the game. Countries like Belgium gets a branch in a Tree so does Hungary but never ever Poland fuck gaijin & Slava Ukraini
You always want at least one AP round in your anti-air belt for larger aircraft, and apparently also bombs lol
Considering how thick is bombs casing, his AP round should not be able to do anything to them(It is something like 110+mm of steel for FAB-5000), but even if that armor is modeled on the bomb there is always gaijin glitch to help small projectiles do the damage...
Yeah I only used AP with the wirb. Pity they nerfed the crap outta germany with the De Marre bs unhistorically.

It’s just nice to have a British SPAA that doesn’t get smashed by small calibre MGs.
Also this tank teaches you to stick with you team in SPAA, you've got a little bit of armour and with the slow velocity you kinda want to be in the middle of all the CAS so you should try to stick with a larger group of you team
Been grinding up the Brits AA line for this because I love both M4s and anything that annoys CAS players, and man, the ystervark is a freaking laser gun, I'm crap at AA and aircraft still have a 50/50 chance of surviving if they go anywhere near me.
You know in real life the Skink never managed to shoot down an enemy plane.
Not because it was bad but because by the time it was deployed the German Luftwaffe was so depleted that none of the frontline Skink units were actually engaged by enemy aircraft.
The Candians used them as infantry support vehicles & they did pretty good at it for a SPAA pulling double duty.
Im loving the skink so far, im playing 5.3 with Britain, challenger, comet, firefly, concept 3. now the skink. i survive much longer in the skink than other AA

Tbh high altitude aa work with 20mm's is really hard unless it's a post war one like the r3, skink is whibelwind but better imo.

Solid shot 20mils would absolutely chew up mantlets & barrels + i think gaijoob should impliment this to make autocannons viable again

@@Bialy_1 Yeah it's funny the one nation that traditionally used dual role SPAA/AT HVAP rounds in their AA guns had them nerfed to crap unhistorically, so now Russia runs wild in br 3-4 again.
An absolute favorite warthunder moment of mine was shooting the FAB 5000 with an M19 and it killing an IL-2 and two friendly planes as well. Talk about timing
the changes to aircraft not being marked dead if you lose your wing tip is so much nicer best change in the update makes it harder for spaa to get the kill but the plane shouldnt be forced dead if they can get it to safety
It’s got a really good lineup for tanks though, with the Avenger, two Fireflies (one premium), the Churchill MkVII and the Concept 3. As someone who can’t stand to play AA it’s neat, but I imagine others will get more use out of it than I will.

Found you the perfect excuse to go play Shermans Oddbawz, they just "buffed" the M4A2 Sherman by giving it a smoke grenade launcher in addition to smoke shells. Its a monster already and now its just that little bit better.
I love it. They moved the damn thing to 5.0. The best part of the skink is that I already researched past where it sits so I can go on pretending it doesn't exist.

Should have it move to 3.3 the same BR as the M4A1 as the Skink is basically a Grizzly1(Canadian M4A1) with it's normal turret and 75mm swap for a custom made Anti-aircraft turret.
As a close air support SPAA, the skink makes sense.
The bosvark and the skink are so absolutely different it’s ridiculous. There so ridiculous it’s worth having them in the same loadout because there so different
The skink seems like a coelion just at a lower br. The ~40mm pen and general performance is on par with German spaa at that br.

We waited soooooo long for Gaijin to finally add this and they make it 4.7 which is 5.7 in reality. So it’s another long wait until it gets a suitable BR…
13:42 that kind of absolute nonsense drives me insane, and it was a big factor in me quitting WT forever. In what world is a T-34's front plate (45mm, 60 degrees) going to bounce 17pdr APCBC? That shot should have gone through out past 2km range easily, even if we assume the T-34 was one of the lucky ones to get actual welds and real armour plating.

incredible how some players are able to name the planes from so affar. Everything i see is "hm, i guess there comes a i want a tank only mode"
Odd and Phly play with really good monitors and max graphics, so that helps *RUclips compresses footage so it looks way worse than it actually is). But you can also sort of guess the most common cas planes the nations you face tend to use and judge it based on wing span and approach etc.

Ready wish it had more armor pen, especially on a hardened mobile platform where you could at least pen side armor. SPAA is mixed bag for me take one out after your initial death to help prevent revenge bombing spam but if you survive now in a vehicle worthless against that BRs medium and heavy tanks unless you can get a lucky engine shot unless you maybe manage to cripple gun barrel of opponent
The per round damage isn't like the m19 or whatever it is. But the survivability is far greater, and you have a higher volume of fire.
Anything to keep german and russian planes from acting with impunity.

I’ve only played world of tanks, been binge watching your videos and warthunder looks kinda cool.
Skink is best BR3-5~6 SPAA hands down. It's the only one I can take into AB with markers and nearly sit with impunity as they attack me. I can bait people in RB to come and strafe and soak the rounds up.
It's better than SPAA which doesn't have Armour. Sure a vark/r3 bullet goes faster but in many cases the Skink is enough AND can take the hits.

To be fair gaijin put it at a br too high for what it can do with such low velocity rounds. There's almost no point in using it unless gaijin lowers its BR or buffs the rounds velocity.

Love they added it after asking for ages, but Gajin artificially slowed the vertical drive down so it feels pretty clunky to lead with it's odd muzzle velocity, on top of a very small magazine that feeds 4 guns each.

Not sure how the Wirbelwind has a slower reload when it has a bigger, open turret. I do think the Skink is superior in terms of effective firing rate and protection.
I still wish this tank was on 4.0 or 4.3. But after playing it for 1 hour I got a hang of it. Now I take to 7.7 and kill jets

It was only used against soldiers irl. Never as an SPAA because it wasn't very good! :)
@@OddBawZ that actually wasn't the reason the skink really wasn't used as an aa because by the time the prototypes were produced the luftwaffe was non existent, one of the prototypes did see combat though it was used to chew through infantry
