  • Chet and Marcel at the Atkins/Dadi festival in France in '91 playing Chet's version of Walk Don't Run. For those of you who don't know Chet recorded this song before the Ventures. They took Chet's version, simplified it and turned it into their hit song. And yes, Chet had in turn taken the song from one of his favourite guitarists Johnny Smith to make his arrangement.

Thank you for this new video. Two of my all time favourite guitar pickers. Did not know Chet recorded it before the Ventures, always thought it was a cover

Shame that Chet and Dadi are gone. Really a sadness. Glad Mark Knopfler is going strong.

Johnny Smith was a friend of my family and he does not get the credit for his guitar skills that he should. He was playing "leads" on an acoustic guitar in the early 1950's that players to date can't play... This guy has MAD skills, Check out the "Complete Roost Johnny Smith Small Group Sessions" to see how good this guy was....

Johnny does get credit. He was an enormous influence. Listen to Chet's praise of Johnny Smith on his instructional video, The Guitar of Chet Atkins.

#ugottalisten2b4udie Walk, Don't Run is an instrumental composition written and originally recorded by jazz guitarist Johnny Smith in 1954.
It was later adapted and re-recorded by Chet Atkins in 1956, and was a track on the LP Hi-Fi In Focus. This arrangement was the inspiration for the version by The Ventures in 1960 (though the Ventures' arrangement is recognizably different from Atkins' finger-picked style) which achieved world-wide recognition, being regarded by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the top 100 Greatest Guitar Songs of All Time. wiki

Chet Adkins covered Johnny's tune.... He did not write it. Nor did the Ventures. Johnny did. Listen to how he plays it... one guitar only on what you hear.....
