anyone watching this who thinks cavett isn't playing up the inept interviewer act for laughs, has no idea how much of a genius cavett truly is. incredibly funny interview from start to finish. what a perfect pair.
A bizarre, challenging, but ultimately entertaining interview.
Loooovvveee Marty Short: a GIANT!
A bunch of the reasons i will always love and appreciate Martin Short really shine here. He has no interest in letting others fail or lose their dignity. The reviews I read about this interview just skewered Mr. Cavett. Imagine this night with anyone else in Marty's chair.
Marty wrote in his memoir about doing lots of preparing for interviews, always making sure he had several stories to tell, and *that* helped save this discussion.
And yes, this was still super weird :0)
This is grueling, sad and delightful. Martin had me collapsing in laughter. This is funny for all the wrong reasons... Dick seems to be in slow motion, but oh so witty at his peak in his day.
Marty is the best in any situation!
Oh poor Mr C. RIP. Thanks for keeping the interview rolling Marty.
Dick Cavett isn’t dead, lmao!!
Thanks so much for this: two masters. Laughed out loud several x & admired the lightning-like speed of response, the kindness of Short & Cavett's real appreciation of a relatively young whippersnapper's jokes. Just so much to learn & love here. Amazing talent.
Did you WATCH the video??
Martin Short is the comedy shark.......
I had to read that twice, but i think i finally get it :0) something about always moving?
I love when Cavett said: I think I stole that from Barry Humphries .. Barry is Dame Edna!
I repeat: Dick Cavette has forgotten more than Martin Short will ever know. Any takers?
I love them both
I actually watched some old dick cavett shows, Compared to johnny carson an everyone since ,dick cavett is the "least "to say it nicely. He was always awkward. And seemed more like an intern takingover for the absent celebrity host. To be blunt hes the worst celebrity host iv ever watched. Dont think he could be compared to martin short in any way. If anything martin short tried to help him thru the entire interview.
Loved his show as a kid...nothing bad to say about Mr Cavett.
@@phil7556 Agree
Thanx for showing something real!!!!!! Lee denny, ferndale, wa.
47:31 that SIGH lmfao
Mr Cavett is legendary.
I'll say it one more time: Dick Cavette has forgotten more than Marty will ever know! (I'll be happy to explain.)
I am a big Dick Cavett fan. He seemed fine through the first part but tired starting after 50 minutes. He was 68 at the time of the taping. That's the age when people's physical endurance "ain't what it used to be". I know, that's my age.
+Vincent LaVorgna
no, plenty of people in their 70s are still working at a high level.
I think Dick was unsure of himself, depressed due to his wife dying a few weeks earlier, and also he is out of touch of the times.
but I absolutely love watching his old shows! he was great because he offered a different platform for his guests compared other hosts of the time.
but I think he did fine here
+Chris Stone
You are right about the energy level of some old people. He looked like someone who was out of energy. I didn't know his wife had passed away a short time before. I'll look at it again.
He was terrific. Period. I loved both of them.
@chrisstone6078 Thank for being kind about this! Age comes to all of us if we are lucky and Mr. Cavett was a giant among interviewers in his time!
His reactions were slow but his intellect still shines.
Martin Short and Steve Martin are both in their 70s now and as energetic as ever
My take on Martin Short is he is a combination of Billy Crystal and Robin Williams shook in a bag.
And now he's resorted to appearing on TV pitching discount prescription drug cards. What's up with that? 🤔
😂
It's good to see him as him and not "on".
Marty isn't always "on", maybe as his background isn't just comedic acting, he only did stand-up once. He planned to be a doctor or social worker, then was cast in "Godspell". But he is naturally very funny. (the "always on" people can be exhausting, one hung around my house for years. I think his own family sent him away, ha).
If Marty had done any of his hilarious characters, I think this would have been worse, more confusing for Cavett, who was obviously not his usual engaging self here. :/
@@amylynnhunt55 It generally depends on who he's talking to and if it's someone who loves getting cut to pieces by him. He says horrible stuff to Conan, but Conan loves every minute of it. They can get really dark.
I enjoyed this interview
Dick Cavett was once sweet and curious....back in the day. Now, he is kind of a bitter know-it-all. Bummer. His Groucho interviews and Richard Burton interviews from the late 60's early 70's were damn hip.
Cavett not only suffers from chronic depression, but he had recently lost this wife, the love of his life.
It's sad that no one who loved Cavett realized that and encouraged him to maybe not do an interview. As someone who watches the wisest, strongest person I've ever known slip away due to Alzheimer's every day? This feels really familiar.
Depression or physical pain can definitely cause mental confusion in older people. It's very sad that people will watch this and just think, you know, "what's with the old guy?"
Martin Short lost *his* wife in 2010, IIRC. I wish i knew what year this is from.
Martin Short: "Taxi"!
25:11 Tom Hanks calls Bill Clinton direct?! 45:45 Katharine Hepburn wrote hand written reply letters to all her fans?!
Poor Marty Short, stuck with a depressive and doddering Dick Cavett. He is clearly getting very uncomfortable. This was painful.
Cavett loves to name drop with every story about him and he even blamed Short for sticking up for himself. Cavett thought he was the guest and host.
Treatment resistant depression and recently losing his wife might have made him less sprightly than you perhaps would have preferred.
@graxjhnsn5658 Thank you for being kind!!
I am 31 and a huge fan of Whats My Line?, I watched every episode here on RUclips and finished only earlier this year, but have watched it for probably 7 or so, I only just started from the beginning again last year and did every episode. And from there I have also seen many clips of Fred Allen and Mr. Cerf and Arlene Francis and Ms. Kilgallen and many other panelists from other shows And the great Steve Allen who had much success on late night himself in the early days. So I am a rare breed who knows and loves Fred Allen, and his passing in the late 1950s is even chronicled well on the Whats My Line episode after it had happened, it came out of the blue, a heart attack, and he was supposed to be on that show so it was a very somber episode. The same thing would happen like 7 or so years later when Dorothy Kilgallen died at a very young age, whose death is still the subject of conspiracy theories, as she was a journalist and may have known something about the Kennedy assassinations someone didn't want her to leak or expose. Right now I am going through To Tell the Truth with such panelist as a young Tom Poston of Bob Newhart fame, and Kitty Carlisle in her flagship role and Polly Bergen, I am up to the start of August 1959 which is like 3 or 4 seasons in but many left in the original series run, about 10 almost I think.
good stuff, Hilts!
Dick Cavette has forgotten more than Martin Short will ever know.
I highly recommend you read Marty's memoir. Heck, actually you should get the audiobook. It is brilliant and warm and so good.
You don't know what a thrill it is to me that you've stopped talking.
Martin Short with an old Conan O’Brian
That was the most painful thing I have ever watched !
46:50 “We’re editing, right?”
Wish Dick would have martin expose Ed grimly what a perfect duo.
Cavett is a little slower but still sharp and capable of doing what he has always done. So he is older. So what.
what year was this from?
Sep 17, 2006!
90 Minute interviews ? How about; Morgan Freeman, John Cusack, Denzel, Simon Pegg, Johnny Depp, Jim Carey, Bill Murray, Gary Oldman, Anybody from the Big Lebowski, including the Coen Bros., Sigourney Weaver, Elvis Costello, Kevin Cline, Jenny Clegg, William H Macy............
This is from 2006
Dan, thank you! I have been trying to figure that out.
Though not his biggest fan, I felt sorry for Cavett here. Martin was sharp as ever but harsh, Dick being a slow and easy target.
When did Dick Cavett turn into Jiminy Glick?
+Lynn Turman I thought the same exact thing!
+Lynn Turman The most notable difference between the two being that Glick is funny to watch. Cavett is just tragic here :D
riiiiight there with you guys! :) Total Accidental Glick-yness!
Short's humor is basically about understated and overt bitchiness.....i find it ccld and flat soulled. it's overly cerebral[not smart, necessarily]as opposed to visceral.
Dick is the old guy here, give him a break.
I think Caveat was in his cups
Owen Renfro I think you're missing something.
A great deal, like knowing he was grieving for the love of his life.
what the hell happened to cavett? he used to be a very good/insightful interviewer, this was awkward!
+wildog348 His wife of 42 years died 2 months before the interview. I think he's entitled to being off his game.
Marty is a weird person to interview......this meandered, never really got started ,it was cold & strange.
Give him a break: recently lost his wife & he's a bit older now, too. Imagine how you'll be if you make it to his age & have suffered a similar devastating loss: he was GREAT.
wildog348 Yes, he seemed a bit altered. Martin Short is a guest people would die to have on. He's quick, funny, and has great stories. That Richard Liu part made me want to leave the Internet forever.
brainsareus It meandered because Cavett went off on bizarre tangents. Short was quite patient with him and even helped him regain some dignity by gently razzing him a bit.
the generational gap is very obvious on this one..
I don't see that at all. This was just a really bad night for Cavett. I wish i knew what year this was or something helpful. But no, Marty references performers from long ago quite often.
@@amylynnhunt55 he had just lost his wife
I never knew that Dick Cavett *stole* more than *Milton Berle.*
I know the name Martin wouldn't divulge when Dick asked him who was the biggest pig in show business that he knew.
Lucille Ball. I'm 99% sure.
you're a dk you know that? why be a fkn misogynist?!
@@butterflymoon6368 You're a ct, you know that? If you were a serious fan of Martin Short, you would have seen the video where he is describing a flight he took, where he was seated behind Lucille Ball. For some reason she thought he was kicking the back of her chair. She went full Karen on him, despite his assurances that he was doing no such thing. She did this multiple times, yelling, and threatening.
And pray tell why does someone else being upset at Lucy make me (or even him) a misogynist? I suggest that you are fkd in the head.
Jerry Lewis.
Would love to know who are the none jewish in the entertainment industry !
he isn't jewish you weirdo
I found it odd that Martin did not cite the loss of his wife of 36 years as one of the tragedies of his life.
Hmm ... yeah, good point. Probably the reason was that she hadn't yet died, and Martin-not knowing she would die some four years later-would have sounded strangely like a psychic or medium had he announced her upcoming death as a tragedy.
He really is very private. This interview is so.... ugh why?
I adore Marty though, he can make even the most bizarre situation take a turn for the better. He is one of the most honestly delightful people in the world.
I can't find a date on this interview yet. Nancy (Marty calls her "Nan") passed away in August 2010 IIRC.
@@amylynnhunt55 2006
thank you :0)
A friend must have used RUclips w/o signing me out, this is my first time watching this. But it helps to know when this was.
I stopped liking Martin Short when he humiliated Bette Davis on Carson .
a man is a man. it's unfortunate.
LOVE Martin Short, but this Cavett character comes across as so incredibly unlikable it's like he sucked all the funny out of the room.
incredibly unlikable? ... hmmm. Hardly.
That makes me cringe for you. This Cavett character?
Please at least Google Dick Cavett.
Cavett is legendary.
He had recently lost his wife and has struggled with depression most of his life. He’s easily the most intelligent and entertaining television host of the 20th century.
What awful and disgusting language by Cavet.
