    Very useful and practical video. THANK YOU! Not always possible to follow the manuals. I twisted and turned regarding the use of the Velux underfelt collar as my windows are near the ridge and hip corner so will have to be inventive, but went for it at the end and will adapt as necessary. I installed two Colt Rotos around 30yrs ago and they need replacing. I'm 77yrs now and the wife didn't want me to do it. Luckily the roofer who was going to do the job in Dec (to be fair it was due to the horrendous amount of rain we had in November) wasn't able to do it. So this has given me the chance to make sure it will be done properly and save £1500 too. If you do stuff yourself you can always take a little extra time to do things 100% that the tradesman can't afford to do. So thank you for this. BTW, The JJRoofing videos are very good too.

    Yeah great video mate. Hit the nail on the head perfectly regarding the snags you run into when fitting in situ.... Doing a fair amount of replacements at the moment on all roof types, using varying brands of window, and there is ALWAYS something that isn't as straight forward as the instructions attempt to make it look, so this video and similar ones are extremely helpful to tradesmen of all skill levels, so thanks alot!

    Just wanted to say a very big thank you for this amazing video mate, it helped loads! We finally bought and installed a UK04 over the weekend. Glad I took my time to get the roof framing square, because we had the BDX insulation collar - If anyone buys this they should definitely add the full 60x45mm extra space as it becomes a very snug fit with little to no wiggle room to square the frame up. My neighbour gave me a hand with the installation, we kept this video on our phones to guide us through each step of the way! Not an easy job, but well worth the effort! Think I'll stick to installing Microsoft Windows from now on 😀 Thanks again mate!

    Hi Pouse, great video as always. I'm in the middle of my loft extension and about to install the velux. I am unable to get the vertical trimmings from gable to roofline due to the position of the purlins and collar. Do you think it will be sufficient to do the verticals from collar to roofline? Thanks in advance.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  2 года назад

      I honestly couldn't say really as it depends on size of window, span of your rafters etc, but on a small window, if you brace a horizontal trimmer from one rafter to the next, then put a shorter timber vertically between the trimmers, that will probably work. When you say gable to roofline, i'm not entirely sure what you mean sorry.

    @joefowler9600 3 года назад +1

    Really good video, im about to fit my first velux in a new small extension slate roof. I haven't felt and battened the roof yet, would you fit the velux frame before felting? Then felt around it neatly and fit the battens so the slates work with the height of the velux? Im thinking that it may be easier to do a good job on the felt around the window if the battens weren't in the way.
    Any input would be appreciated 👍

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  3 года назад

      You can do it either way to be honest. If you feel it's easier to line it up by doing frame first then go for it but you need your battens to line up right with facias also to get your slate overhang right. Maybe batten up to velux height in roof, then fit your frame and carry on with battens? I'm not a professional just a DIYer so there may be better ways to this. Best of luck with it and thanks for watching!

    Hello, nice video
    I have to change the left projection spring because it is faulty. I would like to change it without removing the sash. Does your spirit level method work? What is the size or model of your spirit level you put ? is this dangerous? of course the right spring will be engaged. Thank you.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  3 года назад

      I can't say whether this is safe as such because it could always be knocked out. My gut feeling is if one spring is on place you should be OK but I would suggest a length of timber propped from the floor would be more secure. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  3 года назад +1

      As long as your window is going above or below the RSJ (or possibly just your purlins if timber) and the space is big enough for you window then it's fine. You still need to double up you rafters on each side and double your timbers top and bottom if it's a big window. Hope that helps.

    Very good fit, but I think the bottom flashing is high. There is an opportunity to flow from there. I think another line of tiles is needed before the bottom flashing.

    What’s the j bar for that goes above the window across rafters?

      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  Год назад

      The 2x4s are for structural support to spread weight on the rafters, and the battens lift the window frame to the correct height for the flashing as per the instructions.

    Thank you for the video, put a velux in 20 years ago, this one is going on our roof , rosemary tiles no membrane 1925 house .
    Would you advocate running a metre around the window .
    Great upload 👍👍

      Sorry, not sure what you mean, a metre of what, roof membrane? My understanding is that the flashing kit should work on it's own but I guess you could run a bit of membrane around it as I dis just to stop high winds pushing any water through. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

    Was a roofer for 35 years and have fitted many velux windows, ideally you should of put another slate underneath the front apron, looking at that you had barely any cover on the slate below.

    Best video so far but how did you do the insulation part? You obvioulsy have a new roof but you didn't use the bdx frame: you think it's useless?

      I just insulated my roof with pir board and cut down to size to fit between window and rafters as per rest of roof. Look at my loft conversion playlist on my channel and watch insulating between rafters video. The roof is a mix of old and new. Hope that helps.

    Thanks for a really great tutorial on how to fit a velux window, I have a question, my window is 780mm x 980mm the rafters are spaced at 400mm centres, do I have to cut out 2 rafters? If so this means I would be more than 60mm margin as you mentioned.

    • @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE
      @POUSEaroundtheHOUSE  2 года назад +1

      You have to replace the cut rafters with another rafter at the right spacing to maintain the strength. When you strengthen the opening with horizontal timbers top and bottom you can then place a 'rafter between the horizontals at the opening you require to create your frame. Hope that helps. Best of luck.

      No advice really as I've only ever fitted new. But I would definitely do the extra bit's of roof membrane around the window as I did. I haven't had so much as a weep in my 3 windows in all sorts of terrible weather, and I had all the windows exposed on the inside through several storms while doing the loft, and I really didn't see a drop of damp around them. Now years later, still good. Best of luck 👍
