I went into this record blind, hadn't heard of him or his band. The musicianship, detail, song writing, humour, scope & ambition....this is such a refreshing album.
I was unsure about this song until it gets to the "sophisticated tart" part and it becomes a Las Vegas fever dream with descending piano and his vocals really come out. Amazing song.
This seriously is one of the best albums of the year. Geordie Greep takes what he was doing on Black Midi and leans even further into the Jazz Fusion aspects of it. This is a truly batshit album, but such a rewarding one too, you need to listen to it if you haven't
Amazing. The awkward time shift when the vocal enters, hinting at the story to follow. The video a perfect accompaniment to the song. It's like prog-rock Randy Newman.
Even the intro solo starts on an awkward beat. Not enough to be too weird, but just a tad bit right of the first beat. I think thats there to just add to the story of this extremely awkward character. Just a masterfully written song.
_The New Sound_ is a reflection of modern masculinity, that's my thesis. The character Greep builds throughout the album describes someone who builds an image that's more for other people than himself, his portrayal is a self-assured scumbag but reveals an oddly sweet, sensitive side that's still rather pathetic and lonely, but it's heartfelt at the same time for how honest it is.
@@Pandamasque I saw the Fantano interview first, five minutes into it I knew I would like the guy’s music, never listened to Black MIDI. I did not, however think it would be EXACTLY MY SPEED, but it is.
I was listening to "The New Sound" for like the 100th time yesterday and wondered "has Justin heard this yet? What would he think?" And a few hours later, he answered my thought
There's a definite Donald Fagen/Steely Dan vibe in "Holy, Holy" and I think it's purposeful. They share an aesthetic of being both serious about music and flippant an irreverent at the same time, and it works because it's honest. That said, I'm convinced Geordie is is own man, and has a crystal clear vision of what he wants in his music. Great!
Steely Dan's Peg is real simple chords, just with Jazz Modulation, which is the Modes which are just the same 7 notes of the scale but that you can play all of the scales/keys to any of the others. Just have to KNOW the scales to make it work. Black Sabbath can find their way to Phrygian's min2nds, and Lydian sharp 4ths, they just don't know they're using the Modes or that the Modes are what's going to make it sound strong. Elton John does. Brian Wilson finds his way to them, The High Llamas managed to find how Brian Wilson found them. But it's basic stuff. It's just not Rock and you're not gonna find them by trying to Rock, even though Modal Interchange is the Blues that makes Jazz sound like Jazz, letting Duke Ellington bring Jazz to Classical, and George Gershwin bring ... Jazz to Classical. Duke Ellington made Jazz Symphonic. Lalo Shifrin and Quincy Jones, Burt Bacharach, they know the modes. Rogers and Hammerstein TEACH them "Do, Re, Me, Fa, So, La, ti, Do".
@@christeuma Fascinating information. I saw a video where Donald Fagen explained how he used some 4ths and major 7ths to change the flavor of a gospel or blues chord progression into something different, but that's rather far afield from this video, which is fine, so I'd like to emphasize that while I might hear some connection to Steely Dan, that's just my initial reaction as a die hard fan of theirs. What he's doing harmonically is way beyond anything that I can begin to understand technically, and I am enjoying it immensely, and always appreciate something new and different, which this achieves in spades.
I literally tripped over black midi earlier this year when "suntzu" came on to my car radio, and I've delved into geordie greep incessantly ever since. It's a revelation, this new album.
Absolutely astounding musician. I saw him with Black Midi early last year. The drummer and he were probably two of the most accomplished musicians I've seen for a fucking long time.
This song randomly popped up on my RUclips, and I didn't know who Geordie Greep was, but I clicked on it anyway since sometimes RUclips gives me great recommendations. I was blown away immediately and became an instant fan.
I've been waiting for this!!! I was missing black midi then he came out with this gem and I've been obsessed with it since. My album of the year for sure
Hi Justin, thank you for your channel. Your videos have really helped me with getting through some tough times, especially in regards to me getting clean recently and desperately trying to be healthy.. Ive been a big darkness fan since back in 2003 when I saw you guys early on in the day at Reading Festival screaming (I think) something about bringing us “rock before breakfast”. I was blown away! A proper rock and roll show. Speaking of Geordies, I also wandered into a tent that year and was also blown away by the Wildhearts and felt it was always a travesty that they’d never got any real recognition. Very underrated British rock. I know that you used to have a good relationship with Ginger and that they supported you on your US tour. I was wondering if you could tell us what it was like to work with them and if you still keep in touch with Ginger at all? Take care and keep inspiring people ✌️
I like how it starts out composed (in the other sense), with words that fit to meter, and structure like that, and then after "the reveal" the list of haphazard demands, requests, and apologies - kinda - more and more need to be just jammed into the lines of the song, cram in as many words as possible, increasingly impulsive, compulsive, something like that, and his character is getting more enthusiastic with the idea, as new bits of it tumble out, one over the other. I think maybe the character even gets a bit nicer to his stage prop? "If that's all right with you" isn't something that you'd expect in the initial part of this, before he's kind of signed her up to be a partner in crime. Kinda. In a short time, he tells a lot of story, is what I think.
I also love this about it! The lyrical callbacks really add to this too, "when I tell you your pussy is holy" and "I want you to put your hand on my knee" are a couple of several lines in the second half that repeat statements from the first half but in a more desperate, pathetic, even anxious way. It's such a good device to use the first half of the song to show the situation through the image he has built for himself, and then use the second half to show us behind the curtain and the sheer insecurity that's behind the bravado while recontextualizing lyrics from the first half. Just really brilliant stuff.
An amazing song, and even better in the context of the album. Astonishing live too, what a talent Geordie Greep is. I've been waiting for Justin to review this for a while. Great to hear Justin is a fan of the incredible Donny Benet too!
Agreed Justin. Highest-order lyricism and interesting musicianship. Just when I was about to become jaded with 'yoof' music, this comes along. A rare, exciting talent. Ps: Those who imply that he is misogynistic, obviously haven't listened to (or understood) the song. The character in this song is fragile, insecure and always considers the needs of the female protagonist regardless of his obvious fantasy. Part of the masculine condition that he has obviously realised.
Musically it’s great! Lyrically it’s hilarious! It’s almost like a Monty Python bit but it’s actually technically complicated and interesting. (Which Python routines frequently also were) And everyone probably knows about an individual who thinks about themselves like this without irony. I love it!
I’d say the guitar playing itself is very Mahavishnu era John McLaughlin. And the Latin Jazz fusion style stuff reminds me of Gato Barbieri. Im sure they were both influences.
Love how psyched you are for this one Justin! Now that you’re on a new music spree, Man Man has a really awesome, deep, and varied catalouge. They put out an album this year that rips, sort of Zappa/ Waites but poppier surf rock.
Radical feminist here! And a big, HUGE fan of this song and Geordie Greep. Not buying the whole incel or misogyny either. This guy is just an eminent story teller. And the music is astounding.
I see the song as maybe little things and details that you might think to yourself but never utter out loud or act upon. Almost like a song out of subconscious thought
I knew nothing about Geordie until last week and came to him blind and suspicious but I was bowled (!) over by him in a way that rarely happens. He gets stronger on relistens and stronger still in interviews which show him clearly understanding what he has done, is doing and wants to do. He precisely makes goals for himself and scores them. It was a perfect idea to appropriate a sense of the Jesus Quintana character and setting from The Big Lebowski.
Tou should do a show about a late Canadian band, the Tragically Hip. Unknown mostly outside of Canada but they had a massive impact on us. Sadly, Their singer Gord Downey died of brain cancer. A great loss.
Johnny Nash and Neil Diamond tributes at the start of the video mark new musical high points for the JHRA. Well done. Clearly, the loss of Black Midi is a devastating blow for the Windmill pub scene in London, but perhaps Geordie Greep's solo career might fill that void in the London pub rock scene, though it may never trouble the UK top 50 album charts. However, the single "Holy, Holy" has split opinion in the BM fandom, and could possibly prove to be a messy misstep in Greep's solo career.
The epitome of artistry. He makes it seem so easy! I totally agree that 6 minutes seemed like 2! I'm inspired to try the stream of consciousness thing and see how it goes!
Wow. I'm watching one person trying to exist in the conflict between whether another person is adopting a persona or not. And, Geordie Greep (along with all the rest of us, I think) might not always know whether his is a character or not. I don't think we're fixed in place. This is watching two separate psychological moving parts trying to negotiate the reality they share. It's fascinating.
i like how he supposedly is getting drunker as the song goes along but his drink never gets lower.. his ball is off centre- but then you see the ball again and its a perfect strike... hes not dancing confidently but you cut to his feet and they seem to be moving differently as if its someone else.. its all part of an illusion of bravado the character is trying to present but hes just fake and insecure.
