    I have a question at 5:27 when it said Mr B went to school after breakfast cant that whole thing be a main clause?

    • @Thinkonthesethings77
      @Thinkonthesethings77 3 года назад

      After breakfast adds more information…more than just the main idea. If I’m right, the preposition ‘after’ and the prepositional phrase ‘after breakfast’ would not be included in the main clause bc it;s not the most basic information.

    mr b, please help me out.
    that my brother will win the competition is certain.
    > please help me identify the main clause and subordinate clause here, and explain why?

    • @MrBiggins
      @MrBiggins  6 лет назад +5

      This sentence doesn’t make grammatical sense on its own. Every sentence needs a main clause which makes sense on its own and this doesn’t have one. ‘That my brother will win the competition’ and ‘is certain’ don’t make sense on the own.
      The sentence should be:
      That my brother will win the competition , it is certain.
      That my brother will win the competition - subordinate clause.
      It is certain - main clause.

      Mr. Biggins thank you so much

    • @mrfrederick1
      @mrfrederick1 5 лет назад

      Yes, it does make sense. ""That my brother will win the competition" is a subordinate clause; a specific type of subordinate clause called: Noun Clause. And as a noun clause, it functions as the Subject of the sentence.
      That my brother will win the competition = it
      It is certain (This would technically be the independent clause; its subject "it" is the pronoun that relates to the original noun clause/subject)

      'despite the wind and rain,' is the subordinate clause as it doesn't make sense on its own (not a full thought).

    • @MrBiggins
      @MrBiggins  6 лет назад +1

      A main clause is a set of words that every sentence must have. It is a complete thought that makes sense on Its own. It will contain a subject (main thing the sentence is about) and a verb (action the subject is doing). A main clause on its own is a simple sentence e.g. 'Mr B thought.'
