In May 878, at the battle of Edington, Alfred defeated the Viking army of Guthram (or Guthrum). Many times they tried and each time they did the Irish drove them back into Dublin Bay. The Irish history in Viking times is barely known. The Vikings could only establish some trading posts. I guess the Danes don’t like to focus on that history. It never went as planned.
@@michaelconnor5378. Not according to my reading. There was significant settlement in Ireland. Dublin,Limerick,Cork,Wexford,Waterford and Kilkenny all Viking settlements with the last three known as the Viking triangle.
Those Vkings were so bad! They were coming from my area in Norway, but I think we should be glad those days are long gone
Are you kidding me this was epic
The Vikings did absolutely fine in Britain. I would lay wreaths at the graves of every Norseman who invaded England, if I could.

Traveling to Rome at four and six years old - and yet such a great impact on his life.... amazing. 🧐
There is only one King of England that was called "The Great" and that is King Canute, although we remember Alfred the Great, which he indeed was, it was his Grandson Athelstan who became the first King of England from 927 to 939.
Canute`s father was Sweyn Forkbeard the son of Harold Bluetooth, from which we get the name bluetooth on our phones, Sweyn Forkbeard had won the English crown but died in Gainsborough in 1014 and the Englsh reneged on their promise.
Canute was determined to get his inheritance which he did and at the time was King of Denmark, England, Norway and parts of Sweden.
Oh there`s a pub in Gainborough called Sweyn Forkbeard.
I AM OBSESSED!!
Great video brother
Much appreciated
What a fantastic life!
EXCELLENT content. Thanks for this!
Have you ever thought about changing your channel name to 'Real Medieval History'?
Seems like you're starting to branch out from the Crusades.
Truly Alfred had well earned the title great by his deeds of wisdom and valor.
