There’s another truth that is just as real as ‘death and taxes’...jerks. You can’t legislate manners or honor or simple respect, regardless of one’s personal opinions. Cheers from the mountains of East Tennessee, USA. Love your wonderful lessons too!
Last month my mom got me an alto recorder and a while back she sent me the metronome that sat on the piano as a kid. Your videos have been very encouraging and helped me loose the stigma that recorders are for kids. I'm 50 hehehe. Love from Montana.❤
Not nerdy. You hit it on point, this. It's about wanting to improve proficiency. I still practice with a metronome for many things, even when practicing Hanon on the piano, especially. You learn when to flex the cadence and tempo with a group or even solo when you play. Look at Jazz. You can follow each other, but the metronome can help you get that even start, whatever the final tempo becomes. Excellent video!!!
One little suggestion: If you're looking at your music, and listening to the metronome, great; however, if you read ahead, or have memorized your piece, try setting the metronome to flash (or pay more attention to it swinging if you have an ST, like I did). Just for fun. Why? It'll help you get used to visual cueing on the beat, and prepare you for unspoken glances by fellow players in a group, or even start to ready you for watching the baton. This way you can bend as a group to each other's feel, or at least proceed together in concert in consort with a conductor pulling the tempo around, and be a part of a wonderful new interpretation of the cadence of your performance piece. Beside, it's fun.
Thank you for all the ideas. Metronomes are a great tool - don't care if it makes me a nerd. I have a free app called Rhythmic Metronome and it lets me input the actual rhythm. This helps me with some of the more complicated rhythms until I'm more comfortable with its.
This is a fantastic video! First, I am playing this sonata from Telemann right now! Second: in my violin lessons I have a difficult rhytmic piece and I could use some of the tips you gave! 😊😊😊😊😊😊
Good advices!!! I feel that for me is effective if I don't measure the downbeats, but rather the sub divisions, whilst feeling the pulse mentally. It kind of varies with different music, but I kind of discover that I am more aware of what sections need "cleaning" as I get the music up to speed. Is all about getting the music to a point of control and then figuring out what you want to do with musical nuances.
Hello again. I enjoy your videos very much, they are fun to watch. Thanks! Should I buy a Dream Recorder in Tenor?.. I am thinking of stopping playing the clarinet mainly because of the pressure on my teeth.. I just turned 60. My soprano and alto recorders have always been lying open in my shelf since decades and from time to time I had fun with them... no pressure. I recently watched your introduction to the tenor and I remembered that I had one stowed away somewhere. I found it and it sounds very nice... a Mollenhauer Denner I think. It is more than 45 years old and I hardly ever played on it. But the low tones!! Where are they?... Hardly to be heard. I want to play loud. :-) Would a Dream Recorder be a solution? Thank you!
Interesting video for a rythm-challenged person like me... The problem with the metronome is that I don't know where I am compared to the metronome. I've been recording and the computer helped showing that I'm far off...
Thanks for video! Any suggestions, tips, cos I keep getting lost among the ledger lines! I’m a returning recorder player (45 years break) and also switching up from descant to treble. Any chance of talking about this at some point? Regards, Alex
It is a great combination - fantastic in a lot of medieval repertoire and also for Renaissance dances like Arbeau. The group Cancionero often uses them together.
Hi Sara Thank you for your verry good videos. Because of you I bought two alto recorders that you have given some good comments in your videos. Is it possible for you to give a link to the metronome app you use? Again thank you for your RUclips channel. Erik
I don't think I could get used to anything except my old Franz electrical metronome that has a mechanical click, I tried a digital one and it just didn't work me for some reason. I bought it when I dropped my old mechanical one and it didn't work anymore. A tragic day in my student years.
Maybe it's because I had a mechnical exclusively for years, but I find the function of electronic metronomes where they play one beat differently than the other ones really annoying - if I use one nowadays, I put it to a 1/4 time signature to get the uniform beat I want...
Hello Sarah. How are you doing at this time? What is the situation of Covid over there? Hope you and your family are safe. Stay motivated. Your army is right behind you. Whenever you need us, for anything, we are right here. Just saying because you told me you were stressed out because of the virus. Love.
Please 🥺 explain how to use metronome apps with your recorder I can't afford an actual metronome I just have many apps but they confusing as hell please make video on that if you get this
Rhythm is not really dry... it's horrendously difficult, for me. It's stumped any hope I could have of making a career out of music. I got better over time, but I still feel I am improvising instead of tapping. I should probably find myself a teacher and try that way.

Welcome back nerds xD lol

Packaging all of that super info and practical info into less than 14' is outstanding. Well done Sarah, thank you
I'm a drummer and I love this instruction.
Rhythm and tempo have been my nightmare since I started playing piano and recorder. Your video helped me understand it better. Thanks!
Perfect timing. Our class just posted about this. We LoVe your classes. YOU ROCK! ❤️🥳🎶🎉

I had been waiting for this this! Thank you
Thank you! What a useful explanation and insight in the use of a metronome.

@@flutakovich_40 You guys are everywhere. 😳

Yay!!!! That’s the same one I use!
I use an app called Time Guru which gives the option to randomly mute any % of the beats forcing you to develop your internal clock.

John mclaughlin sets up many metronome at different tempos all over his house....also look up metronome sync...its fun ...gotta have 2

Sarah, do you ever get to play with Hurdy Gurdy players? I think the Recorder and Gurdy would sound great together...
I would LOVE TO!!
@@Team_Recorder It would make an amazing collab video, just putting it out there 😉

@@kentminstrels Thanks for the recommendations!
Thank you, Sarah. My metronome seems to have gone lame ... the tick is very lopsided nowadays. :-/
I think this is your metronome’s way of telling you that you need to play more swing music 😉

What’s that wooden thing next to you?
It is a type of bass recorder, and Sarah made a video about it...
I am still having a problem determining how to choose the beats on my metronome based on time signature.
Try to start with a lower number: When it says 120, start with 100.
Or when there is no number, just try something. If you can't keep up, go lower.
@@ankavoskuilen1725 Thank you!!

Secret time, I've never used a metronome
Yeah i don't think i'll ever be able to play music straight from the sheets. Just thinking out loud.

Is it just me, or have someone else feared it was a video by Wim Winters just by having red "metronome" 😄😄?

Je hoeft geen metronoom te kopen. Daar is een app voor. 👍 😊
