  • Backlight out on your TV? Before replacing LED's check your driver board!
    Vizio 65 inch LED TV: M65-D0
    LED Driver Board Part Number: 3665-0032-0111(2B)

    If an entire quadrant of the LED backlight on your TV has gone out, it's possible that you have a driver board failure and not burned out LED's. Look for a uniform outage, not sporadic dimming or a single dim line (suggesting LED individual lights or entire LED strip failure). If your outage looks similar to mine, taking up 1/4 of your screen, try replacing your LED driver board.
    Replacing the LED driver board is a very simple and quick fix-much easier and less involved than replacing actual LED's.

    Running into this similar issue. Backlights went out. Screen was black but you can see the display with a flashlight. Repairman put new black lights in. Three days later I get a black bar in the middle of the screen. Not a solid bar, but it’s pretty dim. He’s picking it back up. Said it’s the T-con board maybe.

    Hello Thanks for the Video.. I had the identical issue with a large block of dark area in lower right of screen. First I replaced the power board with little no effect, then I took your suggestion and replaced the LED board. It showed a small improvement , but I noticed the longer the TV was on the more the image improved.. I still had some dark stripes and dark corner, but it was less noticeable. To my surprise after about 2 weeks of using TV the issue corrected itself. I was prepared to do the "deep dive" and completely disassemble the TV to replace the LED's buried on the back screen, but that is now not needed. I don't understand why the situation changed over time.. but thought I would post this, perhaps others can try just "burning in'" a new LED board by leaving the TV on for 24 or 48 hours. Usually circuit boards are digital , (they either work immediately, or they do not).. so I am mystified as to how my TV gradually improved, but for now I am happy, and the image is now nearly perfect with no noticeable dark background regions . Thanks again for the video on this issue.

  • @ccoder4953
    @ccoder4953 2 года назад +13

    The easy way to troubleshoot this is to move the backlights around. Since the strips are all the same, as long as they didn't key the connectors, you should be able to just swap connectors for the different sections of backlight. If the problem area moves, then you know it's the board. If the problem area stays the same, then its the LED strips. Also, on some TVs, one bad LED can take out multiple LEDs. It just depends on how the strips are wired. Some TVs run many LEDs in series and even some strips (keeps the current down), so if one opens up, the whole string goes out, kind of like old Christmas lights. That can take out a section of the backlight.

    • @RPG-oh1yf
      @RPG-oh1yf 2 года назад +3

      TO move the LED's around you have to take the bezel and screen off which is about 10 times as much work as removing just the rear cover of the TV. Testing the driver board outputs to the LED with a multi-meter to confirm no voltage output to the LEDs would be the best way.

    • @ccoder4953
      @ccoder4953 2 года назад +1

      @@RPG-oh1yf I don't mean physically move the LEDs. Move the connections to the LEDs from one port on the driver board to another. I did that on one I'm fixing. And it showed the driver board is likely fine, it's the LEDs (which sucks because now I have to take the panel apart and replace a bunch of LEDs). And indeed, tests on the LED strips showed bad LEDs, confirming the earlier diagnostic.

    • @RPG-oh1yf
      @RPG-oh1yf 2 года назад

      @@ccoder4953 Ok, sorry for the misunderstanding. On my 65" vizio I'm trouble shooting there's only 2 harnesses that power the 12 LED strips and all of them are out and all went out within a month, little by little. I'm leaning driver board. Missing the power cable or I'd test them now. What I don't get is how do all the LED's fail at once in your case of it's NOT the driver board? Maybe the board also failed and overpowered them all and cooked them?

    • @ccoder4953
      @ccoder4953 2 года назад +1

      @@RPG-oh1yf Oh, that's easy. LEDs are often wired in series (like old Christmas lights). A common failure mode is for them to go open circuit. So, if one LED opens up, the whole string goes out. I had a panel do that once. Turned out it was just a few bad LEDs. It's also possible you have some LEDs in series and some in parallel. If you have some die (shorted or open can do it), it can cause more current to flow into the other parallel branches, stressing those LEDs more. See, LED drivers regulate current, not voltage. But unless it's pretty sophisticated (and it sounds like yours is not), they can only regulate the current of an entire series/parallel string. So, if one parallel string isn't doing the current it should, the other branches will have to do more. But that stresses those harder, so they are more likely to fail.
      What's weird is the new one I'm working on (with full array dimming, so much more complicated) has LEDs in series, but somehow bad LEDs aren't taking out a whole series string. Might be because the newer panel has 9V LEDs (I think) and the old one had more normal 3V LEDs. The 9V LEDs are internally quite a bit different - internally, they are several LEDs in series, where the 3V ones are just one. So, maybe they are more likely to fail shorted.

    • @RPG-oh1yf
      @RPG-oh1yf 2 года назад

      @@ccoder4953 Interesting. Seems mine failed in 3 segments. First I lost about 1/4 of the backlight, then 3 weeks later we lost about another 1/2 of it and finally the last 1/4 went out. Seems like that should be LED drive board based on that 3 stage failure but hard to say. I am probably going to order a new board from Ebay, can't beat $5 shipped for a new salvaged board I need. IF that doesn't work I can pull the panel apart and check the LED strips.

    I picked up a Vizio M80-D3 for free from work since one day the entire left side went dark and they had to replace the TV asap. The thing is, on the rare occasion, the thing will light up just fine. I know that there are 16 LED strips arranged in 2 banks of 8. Each of the 16 strips has its own connector. For the entire left side to go out, this must mean it's a power supply issue. I have the unit at a shop and they said to replace all the strips. I think they just wanted it out of their shop... I'll likely try replacing the LED driver board myself first and then go from there. Free TV!

    • @swhammondbuildsreviews
      @swhammondbuildsreviews  2 года назад

      Right on! Yes, I would try the board first before the strips - especially if it's occasionally lighting up. Usually an LED either works, or it doesn't - which leads me to also think power supply / driver board. Good luck!

    • @swhammondbuildsreviews

      I'd assume they're pretty similar. LED TVs and LED monitors are basically the same thing - monitors usually have a little more robust hardware and faster refresh rates. It's worth trying, but I can't promise anything as I don't know anything about your particular monitor.

    I have the same issue with two quads but after looking at the driver board in your video I was wondering if you ever tested those 35 volt 470 capacitors that look to be one on each quad. If there was a week or bad cap it could be an even cheaper fix.

    • @swhammondbuildsreviews
      @swhammondbuildsreviews  3 года назад

      Yes, Kyle-I think you're correct. I should have checked the capacitors, my gut tells me this was probably the issue. Anyone reading this in the future, use a multi-meter to test the capacitors on the driver board - it may be an even cheaper fix.

    Mine has alternating black areas. Top right, left middle, bottom right, but mostly noticeable when the screen is darker and not as bad when the screen is light. Do you think this is still a driver board issue or more of an LED issue? All these areas went out at the same time so I would think more of a driver board issue since it is highly unlikely that all those areas go out at the same time.

      I am not a pro at this stuff - the only tv I've ever fixed is the one you see in this video. But yes, given what you've told me, it sounds more like a driver board issue - or even a motherboard issue - rather than an LED issue. Sorry I'm not better help!

    • @swhammondbuildsreviews
      @swhammondbuildsreviews  3 года назад

      Impossible to know for sure-you'll have to take a multi-meter to test the board and LED strips. If the board isn't providing current to the LED strips, it's likely a bad board / transistor. If the board is providing current, it's likely bad LED strips. You can gamble and cheaply / easily replace the board if you feel that you have a uniform outage like what is happening in this video. Replacing LED strips is more involved.

    I have Vizio M55-C2. On the left half of the screen, I have a constant, small dark patch, and after an hour or two i have dark patches all over the left half of the screen. Turning the TV off and then back on, temporarily fixes the multiple dark patches on the left side of the screen (leaving just a small dark area again). I've tried muliple versions of power off resets and played with resets in the display settings. I can be watching the TV and very suddenly the patches appear within an hour or two...then recycling the power solves the most of it temporarily. I believe I either have bad backlight strips and/or bad led driver board. Any opinion? Thanks -Herb

    • @swhammondbuildsreviews

      It sounds like you have it narrowed down to the two likely culprits. The only way to know for sure is to tear it down and check both the LED strips and video board with a multi-meter. With the lights coming back on after power cycling, it makes me think that LEDs aren't burned out - it sounds more like a video board issue - but that's just a guess. Good luck!

The TV now works fine but I am seeing the same problem you encountered but in my case the shaded spots move around depending on what is on the screen. Clearly the TV is trying to adjust the backlight/Dimming but in the wrong spots, I am guessing this has something to do with the different board model #. Any suggestions ?

      Hmm - my assumption is either the board works, or it doesn't. The "starting to go dark" concerns me. I don't think that as a quadrant fails, it's a slow process where things begin to dim. I'm guessing it's an all or nothing situation. The only way to know for sure if checking the video board with a multi-meter. If the fading quadrant is getting proper voltage, my next guess would be failing LEDs or a power supply issue. Hope that helps!

      The only way to know for sure is by testing the LED strips and video board with a multi-meter, and possibly back to the power supply.
