    I designed my own vest some years ago. It has two pockets on one side and 4 on the other. I specifically made the pockets large enough for either my larger cell phone or my neck pouch. That way I can put everything in it, roll it and pop it in my backpack to go through TSA. I used buttons. I've made a few of these, mostly I make them reversible, although I do have one lightweight linen one that isn't (with the four pockets on the interior). My design is a little dressier, and it is very handy when touring around as well as in the airport.

      Would you be willing to share the patterns you use? I bought a pattern called the shopper's vest. It is reversible, but a little tricky to manage. I'm not great at fitting patterns or sewing, and it would be lovely to either figure out how to add pockets to an existing lightweight vest or to have an easier pattern.

    home sewer, I have made my own travel jackets with extra pockets. Saf-T-Pockets is a line of patterns which feature hidden pockets. One comment on the interior "pockets" which do not have a closure: they are a result of the bag of the exterior pocket being sewn into the hem and front zipper rather then have it flap unattached. Unless the garment was lined, a zipper closure would show on the outside. A person could hand sew Velcro pieces to close the opening. Always great to watch your informative videos, gathering ideas for the next time I travel.

    Foreign airlines won’t give you much time, but to quickly put your extra pouch in your personal bag. It happened to me years ago. Since then, I place my security pouch in my personal bag before I get to the gate. Once I’m on the plane, I put it back on, crossbody, under my jacket. They don’t care once you’re on the plane. In my experience of watching people, those who fill their personal bag to the max are scrutinized more closely, by the airline staff. My bag is a bit smaller, and I always get a smile and look of approval by crew. I think this sort of jacket is useful, if you’re not traveling around in to a lot of places, the heat. For me, there’s ease in minimal stuff.

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  7 месяцев назад +5

      I agree and usually I will either put everything in my vest and then throw my vest on the TSA conveyor so that way everything’s there and then pack pack my fanny pack flat and the personal carry-on and fill it once I get on the plane. Like you said once they’re on the plane, they don’t say anything. The other thing about a flat fanny pack is if you want to stick it into the seat pocket in front of you, if it fits nicely. I do agree with trying to be somewhat minimal with my travels, but everybody has their own way of packing and some people need to have medication’s with them or some thing that helps them feel it ease while flying and having them handy makes it really convenient.😊

    Thank you, Eunice. I have 2 go to jackets that are incredibly lightweight and wind resistant , but the 3 oz Montbell, has no pockets and only zips 1/3 rd of the way down. It has a hood though and takes up less space than a hankie. The second one is a Cotopaxi lightweight jacket with a hood, 2 big front pouch pockets, ( velcro but no zips) and two hand pockets, no zippers and not separated inside. The front zipper only goes 1/2 way down the front. If I really want a zipper on a pocket I just get one and sew one in either by hand or on a sewing machine. I always seem to have plenty of room in my personal item when I fly because I really don't like to burden myself with a lot of stuff to carry or keep track of. Last May I flew overseas and went on a 14 day cruise with a 12"×18"×9" rolling bag abd a 25L day pack. I did not need everything I took and I had clothes for 3 formal occasions, that I did use. It was early season in Iceland and Scotland but I had warm and wind layers enough that I could walk comfortably in castle gardens, Historic sites and UNESCO Parks, in the rainy or windy weather. Next time I will not take a rolling suitcase and will use a smaller day pack and an Osprey Fairview backpack. If I buy something that won't fit in my luggage, I will get rid of something else to make space. Really they have better health beauty products overseas anyway. I am a n older, verticality challenged woman though and what works for me may not work for others. Thank you again for your videos, you really do have a great system especially for people that travel less minimal than I do.

(and poachers who need big pockets for their illegal kill! ) I did buy a set of travel pouches - two zipped cubes, large and and small, a zipped flat pouch and a drawstring gym bag - use for shoes or laundry. They flatten completely, no semi rigid seams, and are featherweight. Compressing everything further could mean a smaller lighter roller case or roller backpack. Thank you for another great video. I saw an earlier video of yours with a vest that had a lot of pockets and kept going back to purchase it. At first it was unavailable and then said discontinued. So I am still on the lookout for that perfect vest. I may just have to sew my perfect one. I made a vest back in the 70’s from a Frostline kit so I may be able to alter that. Thanks for the ideas.

      Hi Mary! Yes, that vest was made by Exofficio and has been discontinued, which is why I had to find something new. The other issue was that vest didn’t have any stretch to it, so I definitely wanted to find something that would be more comfortable to wear. Making your own is always the best idea.! I’m sure you’re just going to turn out wonderful💕😊

    You need a Scott eVest. Lots of styles, including non-vests, but their whole thing is pockets. One has 42 pockets and a zip out hood. I have 3 (no hood on mine) and one has zip-off sleeves which I keep in the back zip pocket. Best money spent for travelers. They even have RFID pockets for the wallet. You can put a water bottle in it, even a 15" laptop! It really is a backpack for the body. I load it up, take it off for TSA then back on for the flight and I have everything right there.. I think the one you'd love is called the Q.U.E.S.T as it has a hood. They have cargo pants too that are awesome (though has metal so not TSA friendly. lol) for walking around town without a purse. Actually, the ones I have aren't on the site anymore so new styles may be TSA friendly.

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  7 месяцев назад +1

      So I had a ScottEvest and I did not like it. Number one was the cost I just think they’re overpriced and number two because it has so many pockets. It gets very warm and also you start to forget where you’re putting things when you have too many pockets so that’s why that did not make my list. However, if they make one that has some stretch to it and maybe just a few pockets I would consider it, but I would like to check out that vest that you talked about. Thank you so much for that recommendation.💕😊

    • @imscanon
      @imscanon 7 месяцев назад

      I actually prefer that they aren't very stretchy as it holds its shape when I load it up. If it were stretchy, things would be bouncing around as I walked and misshaping the vest once loaded. I load it up and it still looks normal rather than like my pockets are all loaded up. I like that. I've had mine about 10 years so I don't know if they've changed it. They probably have other types now from what I can see on their site. @@TheoryofSimple

    Hi, Eunice! I would think a decent solution might be to sew or glue some snaps on the inner pockets, which could help contain some of the items. Even better, it foils pickpockets both when snoozing on the plane and when I'm touring around during my trip. I have used Travelsmith 17 pocket vests for years. They really offer a lot of options (I can fit a mylar tube tent in the back map pocket of the one I use as my bugout vest), but over half the pockets are on the outside, so it does look like one of those safari style bulky vests. I have both a Scottevest vest and hooded sweatshirt jacket (the vest in black, the jacket in red.) The vest is too snug to do up at the moment, but the jacket zips up, if snugly. Great ideas! I would love to see everything that you could fit into these jackets. Kind of like a what’s in my purse video including snacks! You could also add some Velcro to the pockets to close. Great for not having to carry a purse also.

      @@michelleneuman579 thank you so much, Michelle! I did show it very quickly, but everyone chooses what they want to carry on as a personal item differently but I could do a video with some of the things that I carry and I have done videos where I show what’s in my fanny pack so basically whatever’s in that is what’s in these pockets😊💕

    Has anyone made a Saf-T-Pockets vest or jacket? I saw a pattern at Goodwill, and picked it up because it seemed like a good idea.

    I've been looking into getting a travel vest. In addition to the convenience of having certain items close at hand during the flight, I also think, "What if there is a situation where the flight needs to be evacuated and I have to exit sans luggage? What items do I want to make sure I get off the plane with?"

    I have a jacket of many pockets and the sleeves can be removed to turn into a vest if it's too hot. However, one has to be mindful that although I can stuff all kinds of things into the pockets, the jacket/vest start to weigh heavily on my shoulders. I now only use the pockets for stuff that would have been in a fanny pack (passport, gum, ear pods, wallet, charger, cable, phone, tissues, etc). While I can put an iPad pro in one of the pockets, it's not really a good idea. LOL

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  7 месяцев назад +1

      So I agree that it can get heavy, and what you put in your pockets is really a personal preference, but I think putting things like your wallet, passport, earbuds,, tissues, and disinfecting wipes just give you a lot more room in your personal item bag, and also keep things very handy so that you can get to them when you’re on the plane😊

    is it allowed to use or bring a pillow case in which you'll putting other clothes instead of actual pillow pretending that its a pillow but you as the owner knew it wasn't 😅?

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  6 месяцев назад

      I have never traveled with a pillowcase that way, but I do use a neck pillow. That’s just a hollow tube that I put clothing in and I fly with that all the time and I’m never been asked about it.😊

    For summer and warmer climates, what do you think of fishing-style vests?

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  7 месяцев назад +1

      I think it depends on where you’re going and how comfortable you are with loading up pockets like a fishing vest. Depending on what you put in it, it can get really heavy and look a little bulky. However, if you’re going to be out and about, and you need to separate things into a lot of pockets, fishing vest is always an option.😊💕

    It's ridiculous that the company doesn't allow you to have a small purse, including a carry-on or personal bag. I was using a wallet to get documents, credentials, tickets, and my passport, which I can put on my neck when I sleep. They tried to say this or another bag. I put it inside, and they didn't do anything. So, if it becomes difficult, I will pay the TSA-pre.

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  7 месяцев назад

      So TSA pre-check is not going to solve this problem because TSA doesn’t really care how many bags you put through the conveyor belt because they don’t really know which ones are yours. It’s when you are boarding your plane that the gate attendants will scan your bags and if you have something hanging around your neck or your waist or your shoulders, they’re going to count that as a personal carry-on and you’re going to have to shove it into another bag.. that’s why I carry things like my wallet, glasses, phone, earplugs, and other necessities while I fly close in hand. And then I will also carry that belt bag or something so that is soon as I’m ready to get off the plane I loaded up and put it on and exit the plane.💕😊

    1st vest: Add some Velcro dots to your inside pockets to keep them closed.

  • @monjiaitaly
    @monjiaitaly 6 месяцев назад

    Won't the TSA open every pocket of that vest?

    • @TheoryofSimple
      @TheoryofSimple  6 месяцев назад

      The TSA will not open every pocket of that best unless you carry something that’s not appropriate to be going through TSA like a knife or something sharp. But if you put things in there like your wallet, your passport, your earbuds, your glasses, a pack of gum or whatever they don’t care.😊 I guess you have to think of the best as something like a purse. It’s just something that you’re wearing instead of caring across your shoulder or something. You don’t put anything in the best that you wouldn’t put in purse and that would not be allowed to TSA security.😊

      Well, it’s not uncomfortable but then again I don’t know what you consider comfortable. I guess you have to balance comfort and wanting to bring things with you on a flight and all I do on my channel is provide information for people to be able to make their own decisions onto what works for them and if it doesn’t work for you, then you don’t need to do it.😊
