I’m glad his parents felt the heat when OP called him an embarrassment bc that’s on him. They should be embarrassed that they raised someone who feels comfortable cheating.

It's because they raised him to be a precious little baby boy who never needs to face consequences for his actions and his mommy and daddy will always be able to wipe his a$$ for him when he sh!ts the bed. He's just ended up thinking that that works with everyone else.

To avoid her being able to play victim, tell her the exact location(s) of where her stuff is and that she can go and get it back if she hurries. For extra sting, don't tell her where some of the last couple things are.

As someone who struggles with binge eating and food addiction, I 100% I would freak out internally if my BF brought home a pastry and I couldn’t have one. Externally I’d ask him to please split it with me or give me a bite. The best way to support someone with BED who has just started learning Mindful Eating/Intuitive Eating is to not eat the junk in front of them. Of course the goal of Intuitive Eating is to not turn ferrel in front of food, so eventually the partner can enjoy their snacks at home whenever they want. But definitely at the beginning the best support is eating that stuff when your partner isn’t present. Same as not drinking in front of newly sober alcoholics. Seeing my BF walk in with a cinnamon bun would have me absolutely jonesing for a cinnamon bun. 😢😵‍💫 Saying no is so hard and being denied is also hard, cuz at some points in the day, it’s all you can think about- filling the void with a hit of dopamine.

Also, like, it just sucks being excluded on purpose. I’m a vegetarian and once my close friend deliberately didn’t even tell me about his birthday dinner because it was at a sushi restaurant he knew I wouldn’t like. I only found out it happened afterwards from a mutual friend’s facebook post.
I was deeply hurt that I didn’t even get the option to decide if I wanted to go or not.
I understand not wanting to pay for her to not eat, but if that’s the only issue, tell her she needs to pay for herself.
I don’t think OP is an AH, and of course no one is entitled to an invite, but I can understand the DIL being upset by it, IF she would otherwise be invited to if food wasn’t an issue.
Anyways, I can understand both sides, but the DIL should have handled that differently, even if I think her feelings are valid.

If there's one thing I've learned as a woman who has a wife, it's best to ask anyway even if your wife has stated she's trying to avoid junk food and eat better. That way she feels considered and cared for and is given the opportunity to set her own boundaries instead of feeling like they've been set for her. Be supportive, ask in advance how you can support her current diet, but always ask when you're getting treats because you never know when she needs to feel included or just needs some comfort food.

Story 4: I typically agree, but I think you're mostly wrong here, Vincey. Yes, the 13yo is likely an entitled brat, however, it is neither OP's responsibility nor authority to parent him. If this is what is to be expected, stop helping the little a-hole out. This entire situation was just crazy, but OP is not the parent. As the youngest of 3, and the only male child, I was childified by my older sisters, even after having a family of my own and being in my mid-30s. Long term, it took both an aggressive, terrible family get together and 1.5 years of no contact before I finally forced them to see me as an adult.
The OP was probably parentified, given the age difference, and that's their parents' fault. But now OP believes they have some level of authority to order the brother around. They shouldn't and their mothers' backing of OP's demands is unjustified. OP needs to let mom handle this and keep their hands out of the future criminal's rearing.

Post 4: If he has bad social anxiety, and he has never gone into a grocery store by himself to buy something, but he has gone to a mall with his friends before, there is a chance that going into the store alone can seem terrifying and even make him want to freeze up, especially if it was unexpected. However, if that's the case, it's still good to make him get out of his comfort zone, so he can benefit from exposure therapy. Since I've gotten older, my social anxiety has eased up, but there were times in the past where I would freak out over small interactions because they were new and I hadn't had the chance to mentally prepare myself. In some cases, I would just flat out refuse to do something (usually involving a phone call) until my mom did it for me (or until I just couldn't put it off any longer once my mom stopped doing it for me).
Meanwhile, I was working a job that heavily involved customer service on the phone, and I had to do regular presentations in front of large groups, and I did it with ease. There's also a chance that maybe he did go into the store once by himself and he did something wong that embarrassed him so badly or something. Like, to this day, i refuse to call to order a pizza by actually calling the place because the one time I gathered the courage to do it (mom wouldn't do it, and this was right before online ordering became a thing), I said, "I'd like to order a medium Hawaiian pizza," and they responded with, "okay, and what kind of pizza do you want," and my brain broke because I had just told him what pizza I wanted, and my brain couldn't think of the correct response, so I just handed the phone to my mom and walked away. Also, everyone gets annoyed when you just get home and someone immedialty asks you to do something, so moot point.

Vincey, I'm not sure if you noticed but some people were voting the pastry story as NAH (No A-holes Here). This is different from NTA. NTA means that OP isn't an a-hole but someone else is, NAH means that nobody in the story is an a-hole.
For the donation bags, I feel like I read a post at some point from the mom's POV but some details were different. In that one the mom was selling her kids' clothes and she seemed to think that this was her kids "contributing to the household income." Needless to say the mom was voted as YTA for essentially the same reasons OP in this story is NTA.

If you're not invited, you are NOT INVITED! Damn the entitlement...
Makes me think she's picky for attention instead of having an actual medical reason since she's so butthurt not being invited to an adventurous food event where there will likely be no "safe" foods. What's she gonna do? Drink soda and watch them chew? Perhaps sneak in a Happy Meal? So childish!

The picky eater story. It was best to not invite her. OP had plenty going on her side
    1) only inviting bio family and not any spouses
    2) inviting a picky eater to a "fancy restaurant" is on the same level as inviting a known Vegan to a "regular restaurant" that only has salad as their vegan option. You know the person would complain there is nothing on the menu for them
    3) OP was paying so it's her wallet, her right to keep the gathering small
And I do defend people on their diet choice/restrictions and so on. I respect the same vegans that respect I use butter etc. but it was the easiest example.

    • @averyjasper
      @averyjasper 3 месяца назад

I agree with points 1 and 3. The thing with not inviting people solely because of their dietary restrictions/preferences feels shitty for that person. (Note that I said for food being the ONLY reason for not being invited.) If that’s the only problem I feel like the person should at least be given the option like “hey, we’re going to this restaurant, you probably can’t/wont eat anything, but you can come if you want”.
Basically what I’m saying is- it isn’t nice when your friends exclude you from events because of food. Lol 😅
But yeah, either way, people are definitely not entitled to an invite, esp for reasons 1 and 3.

I was speaking more in general, that it is kind of a dick move to not invite someone solely because you assume they won’t eat or they don’t want to come. Also plenty of picky eaters/people with dietary restrictions can go out and not eat and are perfectly capable of not whining. And can also pay for themselves.
The DIL in this one was just entitled and handled it poorly. I can understand being upset at being excluded though.

I said no because of my diet and she nearly didn't get one, but I told her that if she wanted a cake then she can get a slice, it wouldn't affect md because I have a cheat day, that day wasn't my cheat day, and if I wanted cake it would be on my cheat day.

But she IS excluding her from a sort of family event. The right thing to do would be to plan something with her alone so she feels included again.
She's not her mother, but she IS dating a man with a kid/teen, so if HE's treated as family, she should treat his daughter as family accordingly. If my parents assumed I wouldn't come and excluded me from an activity I don't like, but invited my sister and step brother...I'd be rightfully upset.
I think OP should consider the step daughter's feelings more. But inherently, it's not wrong to do as she did.
