As an Estonian who grew up making jams, pickles, marinating everything possible, then one major thing that would expedite the process is a dishwasher to wash a bunch of jars at once. I still boil the caps separately. But not having to hand wash jars saves a lot of time. We live in a city but stil make a lot of canned things and our cellar is full.
Also, cucumbers in vinegar marinade won't need water bath if you slice the cucumbers (then you boil them in the marinade for a bit, then can them along with marinade). I know vinegar is not the same as fermenting (I do both) but it helps with some things.
I also make a lot of ketchup like sauces (like apple tomato ketchup) and zuccini-tomato "salads" that go well with pasta stews or other things.
A few years ago I came across a cucumber recipe where whole cucumbers were first fermented im brine for a couple of days, then the brine was poured in the pot, vinegar added and then that went into the jar. Definitely my favorite now.
I hope you can borrow the steamer to make red currant juice🙂

Ah I love this! Feel free to send me the cucumber recipe if it's not too much of a hassle. Many Estonians still have so mcuh knowledge when it comes to preserving! Thanks for your comment.

Regarding the tomathouse soil, you dont need to replace the soil inside. But rather keep the soil moist the whole year, including winter months. What most people do is showel as much snow as possible inside the greenhouse. There are biological and chemical processes involved with nutrient availability, especially potassium which tomatoes need a lot. If the soil dries out, as it usually does in the winter greenhouse, it will take whole three months to recover after the first good watering. My honest advice is to shovel in lots of snow next time we get some fluffy stuff and adding compost or manure every year.

Thats a great tip! Was planning to replace the soil this spring, but now I know I should also keep it moist in wintertime. Thanks so much!

Lovely to see how things are going on your little homestead. It's so precious to see little Eleana picking a tomato and eating it - so many children sadly do not have the opportunity to know where their food is coming from!

Your daughter is utterly adorable and really hope that her stomach issues ease.
Interesting comments about raw vegetables and the nightshade family links. I was unaware of that. My Granddaughter has been visiting from the Netherlands and she has been grazing freely from the garden so I will definitely have a read up about the link. 😊

Your garden is impressive!! Ilianna is so adorable...I have heard that tomato (or any nightshade plants) skin and seeds can irritate digestion, as well as whole grains...white sourdough bread is better than whole grain. I love to see you and your homestead thriving. I would leap at the opportunity to be a WOOFER on your homestead, but alas, I am 74 yrs old and probably not be too much of an asset to you😂😂Thanks for the garden and homestead tour. It's always a pleasure to see how you all are doing❤🌈

Thanks for the tips:) Yes to the nightshades and the white sourdough bread, we are aware ;) Eleana just had two raw tomatoes in her lifetime but maybe the video might make it look she is eating it regulary:) Haha, as an 74 yrs old lady you probably have lots of wisdom to share though so why not hehe . Thanks for following along!

Greetings from Maryland, USA! Your baby, animals, homestead and gardens are growing and thriving! How lovely it was to watch this video while enjoying my cup of a coffee this chilly morning as outside our summer too is turning toward fall. Our tiny garden didn’t produce as well this year. I think your insight about replacing the soil in the tomato house with fresh compost next growing season is something I should do in my garden. Thanks for the tip!

    Re Eleana's tummy and gas...
She could be dairy intolerant. Which she would get through your (breast) milk if you are consuming dairy. It's a common thing with infants. Our niece had to stop consuming dairy when she was breastfeeding because (Daisy) her daughter had tummy and gas problems. It is usually a temporary problem they grow out of. Just a thought!
Anyway, we've been following you from the beginning and you both must be so proud of all you've achieved. It has been wonderful to watch! ❤

Thank you for another beautiful glimpse into your lives. About zucchini - I am not as much a fan of summer squash as I am of winter, but do grow a little extra zucchini plants for the chickens. I cut them in half and they love it! My favorite way to cook zucchini is to make zucchini parmigiana, with ricotta (you could use goat cheese). Otherwise I like it in soups and stews, or for a faux pizza crust, but that's about it. Anyway, hugs to you, and yay for the air bnb, and woofers.

Such beauty - in build, garden, artworks, baby, and lifestyle. I have found cranial osteopathy to be a gentle and wonderfully effective treatment for infant with gastric troubles/colic etc. It might be worth a few sessions to see if that eases Eleana's discomfort. In the meantime, avoiding nightshades for her (tomatoes, potatoes, aubergines and relatives) until she is older can also be helpful.

We in Estonia share images of our children without worries, its common practice. How could it be unsafe? May be are you living in very different environment - hostile or unsafe? Our small children are going to school and back themselves without parents, they are playing outside where they want even when there is dark, and so on. Estonia is peaceful country with peaceful people. Those numerous restrictions many other countries (USA for example) have are for us SO weird - where are you guys living, amongst savages in some barbaric jungle?

    • @paulinebrus7580
      @paulinebrus7580 5 месяцев назад +1

@@zasmirko100 it is. But there are unfortunatly also a lot of weird, dangerous people in the world who apduct little children for example. It maybe feels stupid to think about safety when you feel so safe in your own home, garden, village, but 'they' are everywhere in the world. Also in Estonia. That is why elizabeth probably warns here. Showing your face on the internet and giving your adress as well is a risk.
