  • Ahh, this beat up old Model 3. It's not just well loved from the previous owner and all their notes and stickers, but because I love it to.
    But it started playing up recently, so it's time for a new power supply!

    Ah yes, the black suit is very appropriate given this week's news. 🙂
    I always appreciate a PSU upgrade, great way to protect and future proof these old machines!

    Wow, I'm impressed! You did that mains chassis wiring without burning the house down even once! A task which nanny state would have us believe is borderline impossible to do without the correct qualifications and certifications. Certainly on par with handling firearms, transporting radioactive waste, or wiring an Ethernet cable. All of these things are clearly of equal danger in the eyes of nanny state.
    Seriously though, this does seem like a neat solution. I was looking at a similar Mean Well power supply to use in my Apple II clone, but I ended up going with a TFX power supply, mostly because it was a neater fit. Unfortunately there's no nice breakout board like that for my machine. It used a weird power connector, not the "standard" Apple II connector, so it took a while to figure out what it was so I didn't have to solder onto the board. Turns out it uses a JST connector that's still manufactured some 38 years later. A quick order placed on the JST website and I had the connector and contacts within a few days.

    I saw those snazzy duds and I thought I was watching RMC for a second.
    Where the heck was this video 2 days ago? I just spent a few hours messing around with putting a meanwell in my Model 4 dealing with clearance issues. lol. I never thought to put it under the floppy drives :) I seriously love your channel and your videos. Keep up the great work.

    About your dressing style (before seen you video): it makes you look much more than just a "Mr Lurch". Anyway, if it is due to the recent circumstances or if it is for whatever personal reason, wear it if it makes you feel comfortably at any time. Many, many thanks for ALL the contents you deliver as a gift to us during all these years.

    Ahh, I forgot it was now Septandy! And good timing Mr Lurch ... I finally got my US CoCo2 out to fiddle with it, and the first thing was pulling the transformer out to figure out an Aussie 240V replacement. I didn't realise I had to dress up for the video though ... still wearing my old jumper ;) /Brett

    Got me thinking of upgrading my machine, a model 1 in a model 4 case.
    Which brings me back to my favourite peeve with US equipment, black for active... I usually rip that out and put in standard brown & blue etc, lest I mistake that thin black and white as something else and give myself a shot of 240V in the future.
    Actually for that longish run, I would use standard three core flex, then is will really look like power wire.
    I would also put something over the back of that power switch, it looked like bear solder joints in the video, so easy to brush your hand over it whilst servicing your machine. Even a liberal coating of hotmelt glue is better than nothing.

    Amazing that tiny MW PSU replaced the 2 massive by comparison original supplies.

    • @retrozmachine1189
      @retrozmachine1189 Год назад

      The original PSUs with a dual floppy machine would see the display duck and weave when the disk drive motors were started. This one is probably much better regulated. I replaced the PSUs in my long gone 4 internal floppy MIII with a single beefer and cooler running 5V/12V power supply. The - supply for the DRAM and RS232 board were done with separate charge pumps based on 555 timers. The DRAM needs very little current and the sag on the one for the RS232 was low enough that it didn't cause any problems. These days you can buy isolated 5mA PCB mount modules in any low voltage you want for a few dollars.

    Excellent. I'm sure i'm going to need to do this at some point. I think i'd rather figure out a way to use the existing power supply locations than storing under the disk drive.. I guess something to think about. Thanks for the vid!

    • @MrLurchsThings
      @MrLurchsThings  Год назад +1

      It possibly doable. However the Mean Well is just a bit wider and longer than the four screw points where the original PSU’s mounted. And if turned 90deg and mounted where the FDD PSU was, it fouls on the CRT. And is too tall to mount where the rear PSU is. I tried all kinds of other mounting options before deciding on where it ended up.
