But IT ISN'T gold backed. The zig can't be redeemed for gold! Period! Same old problem. Zim needs serious policies that actually attract investment and a justice system that doesn't take five years or more for the simplest matters to be resolved. Justice, property rights and Ease of business are three main pillars of investment. It's not difficult if you are being honest. Basic.

If there was a functional democracy in Zimbabwe they wouldn't have to experiment with these ridiculous de-linking alternative currencies. How many years is it going to take for the government to realize this. The entire economy collapses due to rampant inflation each time they do this. Gold is not the answer - it can be relocated and stockpiled - this process creates volatility - unreliability and accumulation in the hands of a few - these are not core criteria for a base currency.

So has the famous "gold mafia" issue has been resolved? Let's hope so. Let's also hope that a massive dose of integrity, honesty, restraint and good/easy-business policy has been injected into government. Let's also hope that an enormous amount of genuine trust has been infused into Zimbabweans to adopt this zig. But trust is -usually- always earned.... Usually there are no shortcuts.
