Very true. Crying is healthy so to speak, it heals your soul and being able to cry is the single most important quality in any human being. I wish most cultures didn't have all those things you say, like "oh, don't you cry" - well, if you feel like crying, just cry. It's not going to hurt, rather the opposite.

James Blunt is a very remarkable man. He served in the Life Guards regiment of the British Army ( Captain). He stood as an Honor guard to the Queens mom when she died and stood in state. And more remarkable is there is a great chance he prevented WW3...when he refused an order to attack Russian troops when he was a British soldier in Kosovo. Blunt said he was willing to risk a court-martial by rejecting the order from a US General.

I've spent the last two hours listening to this song, and watching the reactions to it. Your reaction , when you mentioned your son, really gut punched me. I'm not a father, I'm a mother, and my oldest son and I are also estranged. He's 46 years old, I'm not getting any younger and my health isn't the best. It's been over 5 years since I've seen or talked to him or my grandchildren. My heart hurts constantly and I don't know how to fix this. God Bless you, I completely feel your pain. This song stirred up every emotion in my soul.

Hi, so sorry you and your son are estranged. I how difficulties on and off with one of my sons. We went for a long time not talking. I finally sat down and wrote him a long email about how I felt. I just kept sending him cards and 7:49 emails, and eventually he,came around and we repaired our relationship. His Dad, my husband, died a few years ago and my son and I have become much closer since then. He is a little older than your son. Don’t just leave things the way they are. Fight for your relationship. It is so worth it. Good luck nd I hope you get some resolution. Hugs,❤️🇨🇦

Just a little background here. James is a former commander in the British military who served out in Kosovo, and his father was also a former military man. When this video was made, this was the first time James had sung this song to his dad who had only recently been diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer which was terminal. James's record company had insisted he use 'Auto-Tune' when he recorded this but he refused because he wanted this to be 100% real, raw and genuine. Towards the end of the song, we can hear James's voice wavering slightly but he managed to hold himself together. What you see in this video is real and absolutely authentic. Thank God, they managed to eventually find a kidney donor and his father survived and is still with us. To be honest, I don't know quite how James managed to do this, but he did, and God bless him for that. I pray God that you find your own channel to peace within your own family. Family love is so so special and the bonds so strong, even when we choose not to admit it.

I love my half siblings with all my heart as well as their mother I consider mine and most of all our father we all share in common . I am by myself on my mother whom I owe my life to but i am grateful for meeting them all when i turned 22 yrs. Old with 3 kids of my own . And I will not lie I was angry with him but I love him so much I feel your pain . I see him once in a while and he's gets weaker every time I see him. Sometimes I blame myself for him being sick but I want to see him . I want my kids to know him love him and I want him to see his grands .. so pls look for your son . It's not easy time goes by fast . Pls check on him . I am his 3rd son on another woman . No matter what I can replace my friends but my parents I have only a pair and I will never have a replacement.. I will never stay angry for my love is too sincere too deep for them . I want to give my kids the piece that questioned my life since I was 2 growing up. A father ..ty

I understand your hurt because I'm nearly 47 & i have no relationship with my father. He has done some very unforgivable things to me BUT it's not me that has slammed the door closed. I heard recently he said as long as he is still alive, he will never allow my mother & me to have a relationship. I have had to forgive him in my heart, I could never continue to carry the weight of things he has done & have a happy life. You seem like a caring person from your reaction, I wish he had that ability, but I know he doesn't sadly!! I pray your son forgives you & you both can have what i will never have. God bless you. PS i have listen to the song & watched reactions for 2 days & this is the first comment i left on any of them. I find myself longing for the father son relationship i will never have! I need to somehow get over it!

This song brought me to my knees. My father's relationship with me when I was young was an abusive one. So much so that I spent many years not talking to him. My father spent the last years of his life living as a hermit in the woods of Maine. He was found outside his cabin months after his death. What was left of him at least. In our last conversation he tried to reach out to me to connect as father and son. I told him that I didn't think of him as my father. He replied "But I am your father!" I said "My father is six hundred feet tall and broke bones and walls and mothers. It's best for you that I don't think of you as my father. To me you are an older friend that I share a similar sense of humor with that I speak to once a year (if that) on father's day."
Eerily similar to " I'm not your son, you're not my father. We're just two grown men saying goodbye.
I knew his mistakes, he knew some of mine. He was my monster. I could never get past that.

Maybe your son is wishing you would listen to him. Sometimes there doesn’t need to be a right or a wrong just acceptance, understanding and love. As someone with my own family journey to deal with, the 'I know your mistakes and you know mine' line, kills me just the same. Thank you for sharing this.

Never apologise for your emotions Kell, proves you're human. I truly hope that you and your son can talk again, having been previously estranged from my old man for nearly 10 years, it's hard beyond believe.
For years I hated him, he hid away from me and my brother and wouldn't face us, he'd hide behind phone calls and letters left on our doorstep. Then just over 3 years ago, I discovered that I was going to be a father myself. When my dad found out, something in him changed.
He'd been a stubborn man all his life and would never swallow his pride but when he found out a new chapter in our family's life was starting, he did everything he could to be there for us. Including swallowing his pride, facing us and admitting he messed up big.
It's been slow progress but things are slowly getting back to the way they were before everything happened and my little girl loves her "Papa" and gets excited when we go to visit him and my mum every week.
Don't lose hope. Your emotions here show that you love your son and through it all, I'm sure you and your son can start afresh.

I hope everything has been resolved with you and your son. My upstairs neighbor was in the same situation with his son and daughter, because of his ex from his second marriage. 2 years they had not spoken. He was not able to see his grandsons. He passed a few months ago and his kids regretted not reconciling. It’s too late for them, but you can. It doesn’t matter who’s right or who’s wrong. Love each other as a family.
RIP Guy 🥃 We miss you, bud.

Old Man Kell - Thanks for sharing, I lost my dad when I was 13 and would give anything to have just 1 more day. For both of your sakes, I hope you and your son come together again because it’s so valuable. Seems you’re ready and he is not there yet, but keep giving it effort. Wishing you well from Fort Worth Texas.

I think what really gets to me is the "don't be afraid" part as my dad never told me don't be afraid even when I was a young kid and wanted that nurturing relationship he never gave me...

Nothing that you can ever fight about is worth losing connection with your family. "No need to forgive,no need to forget. I know your mistakes and you know mine"
The classic mistake we make is to not realize that sentiment until its too late. Call or write your son. While you can. He will miss it when you can't.

It's amazing how hard this song hits men. We all look up to our dads and watching them get sick and frail, and then eventually become their protector is heart breaking. We all want our father's to be proud. Be good to your fathers and sons gentlemen.

Never be sorry for showing emotions, we especially as men don’t do it enough and it leads to Mental Health breakdown.
Whatever the reason is for being estranged with your son, it’s never worth it, we aren’t here for along time, we need all our family, reach out to him, even send him this song, I hope you reconnect soon.
    Much love Kell

I have been watching reactions to this for 2 days, crying the whole time. But I think the real message is to mend fences while you can because we all make mistakes and shouldn't judge each other too harshly. Time ends for us all and it's better to bring peace before it's too late. I see this was 2 years ago and I hope you have found peace with your son.

I love this song. I wish I got to say goodbye to my father, he passed away 3 months ago. Me and my father had a really rocky relationship or whatever its called. My Mother and father divorced when I was like 2. Thanks to his problems with alcohol. He stuggled alot with it and it messed with our relationship. Lately he had been trying to get better and try to be around more. My brother and Sister hungout with him, but last 3-4 times i had said no. Found out after his death, that he knew he would pass away soon, and just wanted a little bit more time with us. Never take your loved ones for granted, because you never know when its the last time. ( sorry for long emotional text )

James dad was actually dying from kidney disease & this was his tribute & farewell to his dad. Thankfully his dad received a donor kidney from a distant relative who reached out after this song came out & is doing okay now, this was the first time James played the song to his dad , the crew and James himself was crying and his dad said ‘stop I am not dead yet’ , the record company wanted to auto tune the song but James said no because he wanted it to be real
