  • Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott says he is “working as swiftly” as possible to pardon a U.S. Army sergeant who was just convicted Friday of murdering a Black Lives Matter protester in 2020 just blocks from the Texas state Capitol. Daniel Perry was also convicted of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon for fatally shooting 28-year-old Air Force veteran Garrett Foster. The Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles said Monday it is now launching an investigation into Governor Abbott’s request for an expedited pardon. We’re joined by Hiram Gilberto Garcia, an independent journalist who live-streamed that night and was the first witness on the stand to testify at Daniel Perry’s murder trial, and Rick Cofer, a former Travis County assistant district attorney.

Exactly. The blm mobs were dragging people out of their cars and beating them unconscious. Their stories need to be told. The way democracy now and the rest of the left wing misinformation echo chamber push lies and propaganda is criminal and the entire reason these riots even happened was because of dishonest journalists pushing the myth that's "racist cops were hunting down unarmed black people every day" they caused the riots which caused this guy to point an AK 47 in the face of an innocent driver. Now the same media that manufactured the propaganda that incited the riots are lying about this guy being a "peaceful protestor"

No surprise there. I'm not sure if he really felt like his life was in danger at that moment but what I do know is that you don't get to stop traffic and approach someone alone in their car with a group of other people, while making demands holding an AK and think nothing can happen or that there isn't a chance the other person is going to feel threatened. I can't help but think that this occurred partly due to the demonization of BLM by the political right, especially Fox News, when they would describe peaceful BLM protests as riots. With this mischaracterization of the BLM protests, Fox viewers would feel much more threatened in the midst of one of these protests, and I suspect that this also affected the shooter in the Kenosha BLM protests. Obviously this doesn't absolve the shooters in any way, but IMO Fox News and other right wing "news" sources are also responsible.

But since about 2019 or so, that has all changed. What Abbott, Paxton, and the Republican legislature has done to my once-beloved state is disgraceful. Texas is in my blood, I feel genuinely connected to it, and that blood boils to see it becoming a spearhead of authoritarianism, bigotry, regressive culture war bullsh*t. This sounds melodramatic but there is no better way to describe it - the Texas government is literally driving a christo-fascist movement in this country.
But I actually agree with the other commenter. What is happening in Texas is not racism. I know Texas much better than that. While some of their policies appear, on the face, blatantly racist - such as the gerrymandered maps that somehow reduced the number of majority-nonwhite districts despite the vast majority of the state's growth being from non-white communities - I do not believe that racism is truly what is driving this movement. It is a more universal form of bigotry against anyone who does not adhere to their ideology. It is a naked thirst for power and dominance over their fellow men and especially women. It is a Christian ignorance and self-importance that believes that the end justifies the means, and that whatever whims they happen to feel that day are sufficient ends to justify any means necessary to achieve them. Even when those whims are illogical and directly contradict their proclaimed priorities the day before.

@@ItsSkeletor There is no evidence that Foster aimed at Perry. This claim - that Foster raised the barrel of his AK-47 - is, of course, Perry's principal hope to escape a murder conviction. It was refuted over and over during the first three days of the trial by witnesses who were near Foster that night. All repeated a version of the same story: They heard squealing tires as a car sped into a group of about 20 protesters. The protesters, some of whom had almost been hit by the car, slapped and kicked it. Garrett Foster strode to the car's side and issued an order to the driver. All of the witnesses insisted that Foster did not raise the barrel of his gun. According to the D.A.'s lead prosecutor, Guillermo Gonzalez, his gun was recovered with the safety still on and no bullet in the chamber.. Perhaps, Perry, who complained about the protesters and indicated that he may have to shoot some protestors - should not have (deliberately?) driven into the middle of the protestor and then shot the first armed protestor that he saw.

If Foster would’ve had his rifle on a sling it would be a different situation as then the argument could be made that Foster had his rifle Slung/Holstered and therefore was not a threat.
