    As always guys, I love your feedback and I'm more than happy to answer questions where I can, so drop them in the comments below and I'll reply as soon as possible :)
    Scaffolding dimensions:
    Main beams - 1/4" square balsa strips, cut to 3" or 1.5" long depending on how tall I wanted that piece to be (I made most 3")
    Cross strips - 1/4" strips of 1/16" thick balsa, cut to long enough to cross diagonally (about 3 and 3/4" for the 3" tall piece, and 2 and 3/4" for the half height ones)
    Railing dimensions:
    Bottom piece - 3" or 1.5" wide (You can make them all 1.5" wide if you like for more flexibility, its just easier to quickly lay them out with some 3" ones too), 1/2" high to match the side of the floor tiles.
    All cut from 1/16" thick balsa, in this case I cut down 3" wide balsa multiple times, but you could buy 1/2" wide balsa strips, or glue together 1/4" strips, and so on.
    Railing top pieces - 1/8" wide, and then 3" or 1.5" long to match the bottom piece
    Railing posts - 1/8" wide, 1 and 1/4" tall
    Again 1/16" thick, I bought these as 1/8" strips for ease of use, but it's a LOT cheaper to buy wider strips and cut it down yourself, that is an option.
    Ladder Dimensions:
    One storey ladders - 4" tall
    Two storey ladders - 7" tall
    Three storey ladders - 10" tall
    Rungs - 1" wide
    All cut from 1/8" wide, 1/16" thick balsa strips again
    Wash mix:
    If you've made this kind of wash before it's basically the same as the black brown wash I usually use except it's pure black ink, and no brown.
    If you haven't, it's easy to make. The mix is just a 60/40 mix of water to acrylic matte medium
    With a few drops of flow improver in as well
    And then some carbon black ink to add the colour before shaking. For a half full 120ml bottle I used 20 drops, so you can multiply that by how much you're making to get the right amount.
    Tin safety:
    Tin is safe enough to use if you're reasonably careful, I cut most of mine from tin can lids with scissors. most of it isn't sharp enough to be a problem, but it's important to be aware than it can be.
    Make sure you're wearing thick gloves when cutting and handling, I use some woodworking gloves.
    If you want to make doubly sure the tin isn't sharp, use a metal nail file along the edges to round it off.

      Small nitpick/curiousity, wouldn't the balconies have some kind of angled brace under them? Like a slanted piece of wood or something for stability?

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 года назад +5

      Usually, yes, and you can add one with balsa and a magnet to connect to tin under the tile, if you want them :)
      This was going to be in the video, but I thought it would be of more limited interest so I cut it in favour of getting the video out in a decent amount of time 😅

That's what most of the other crafting dms do on their channels... • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 года назад +1

      Cool! Wobbles are usually due to things either not being the same length (or the cut being angled, which makes it slightly longer than it seems) or if you make it without the little piece between the two crossbars, like I say in the video :)

    • @RPArchiveOfficial

      The tiles do sit on?
      Basically it's a) easier to make and b) easier to connect edges to railings/ladders:)

  • @colinstreck710
    @colinstreck710 3 года назад

    Would the model need to have the magnet placed at the edge to let it climb the ladders, and would this be messed up in any way if it is just added onto a base that already has a magnet at its center?

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 года назад

      It would, this is one of the reasons I'm promoting the use of hollow bases with tin can strips glued beneath - magnets when and where you need them, and space under the base where you need that instead!

    On a 3" railing section, per the video, if you leave space at the two ends at 1/4", 6 rails at 1/8" wide, with 5 gaps at 1/2" as you say that is 3.5+ inches long, not 3 inches. How does that fit the 3x3 platform tiles? Thanks!! Just seeing weird math in my numbers.

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 года назад +1

      The rails are centred at those measurements, so the middle of the rail goes 1/4" from the edge, the next goes centred on 1/2" further from there, and so on :)

  • @freeguy7628
    @freeguy7628 3 года назад

    Why is the second template 2" x 2" x 2 1/4"? Why the extra 1/4"?

    • @RPArchiveOfficial
      @RPArchiveOfficial  3 года назад +1

      it means it isn't the perfect size to fit INSIDE the two posts on either side, which would make the whole thing thinner than intended :) making it longer gives it just enough length to keep the two sides as far apart as intended. You can kinda see this at 3:13 where the forward posts are slightly overlapped by the foam - its the same at the back.

    • @RPArchiveOfficial

      That's basically the reason I went with stronger magnets in the balcony floors, they're fine on their own - but you can add columns underneath just by making some with magnets in the top and adding tin under the balcony floors - not sure if I show that In the video 😂

      I didn’t have 50 around, tried 100, and much prefer the wire brush. Really lets you get deep texture, whereas the sandpaper wears away at the whole thing and creates dust

    gonna go against the grain here, those scaffolds would be unrealistic. Without a horizontal tie the diagonals would be pushing outward, fine if its against the ground or has a deck on top, but stacked 2 high they wouldn't work in real life, horizontal forces would blow the joints out.
    they look great though, love the balsa.
