For a first real try, it actually turned out really well. My main advice would be to not be afraid to go too dark! Lots of people are hesitant to go darker, but being confident in your shading will make your portraits feel and look a bit better. Also, you were right about it looking like you did it, and that's great! You have such a strong sense of your own style, and it's really cool to have that. Keep up the great work and I can't wait to see more
Might be random tips, but might help in the way! Always flip your picture, usually the eyes, nose or even lighting might've looked almost perfect but something still looks wrong, flipping the picture really helps. Don't have to draw it exactly from the portrait, a big mistake of mine was trying to recreate, especially with shading and colors. It will not turn out as you expect if you just take the colors from the portrait and shade as it is, at least from my experience.
Doing a self-portrait is difficult for anyone, so major props to you for taking the challenge! You make your art pop with your style every time! You're an amazing artist and person! Keep up the great content Bro!
For drawing portraits, or anything in general, it can help to put down an outline of the head and face, then put down vector lines to outline the darkest shadows and lightest shadows. This does work better for black and white drawings because your establishing the dark, mid, and light tones by doing this.
Barely started the video but I wanted to say I'm super proud of you, of how far you've come as an artist and as someone making content. I know this shit isn't easy.
Having now finished the video, I want to say that the piece so far is distinguishably you, both the subject and the art style. I can't wait to see how you finish it up.
that looks awesome man, I really like how you implemented your style. keep it up. sidenote: i know you like animating, maybe try animating a photo of you. whether as little as blinking or full on as speaking i think it would be very cool to see and a very useful practice. I love you and your work man
i just went through every drawing vid while starting my first pair of “custom” pants?? idrk what to call them, but you inspired me to start them finally and having you doing something artistic in the back really helped me stay motivated which i have troubles with. i really enjoy these drawing videos and you’re an amazing artist !
I love watching your art unfold lmao also one thing i remember about art class is if you do a portrait or self portrait you should start with the shoulders and neck and work on the shape of the head, granted my art always sucked and never looked realistic in any capacity but i'm just trying to pass some knowledge
I feel like self-portraits are always harder, not only are you critiquing your art but also how you look and how you see yourself. I think it turned out great though, not what I was expecting but still definitely on par with your style and talents 😊
Honestly I think you did a really great job. It’s never easy trying to draw yourself because you know your face so much more intimately than anyone else so you see all the really tiny specific details. But I think if someone randomly showed me this drawing I would say it looked like you.
hey! small tip fo krita, theres a tool that looks likea little pin, if you press that and go into i think its aditional settings you get a list of things that are fun
I really love your art and I’m so happy you’re doing more of it on your channel. I think it would be super cool to see how you do them differently if you do decide to do more through the year. With the eye you don’t like though Try lassoing it and play with rotating it. The inner corners seem to be at different angles ie the right seems a bit more even/maybe even a little down while the left seems to angle upward and check the sizes of your irises/pupils. But honestly it’s super good (better than some that I saw even in art school) and I can’t wait to see what you make in the future.
We just had to draw a self portrait for a college course- I gotta say, it’s really nice to see an artist I look up to learning with me in a way, even though your technical skills are better than mine, It makes me happy to see you improving since it makes me feel like I can improve too :) It would be super cool to see a video where you attempt a hyper realism self portrait, then do a very stylistic abstract portrait just to compare
A good way to start portraits is to start with a sketch to know where to place everything and check your proportions easily an example is starting with a circle and adding a Jaw shape below and adding lines where you should place your eyes, nose, and mouth
Please do more art videos, they’re such a good style and I have never seen a RUclipsr do something like this. It’s so entertaining to watch and fits your content style perfectly
I like that you're stepping out of the 'normal' because it's interesting seeing your style shine through in the self portrait. There's no better way for it to possibly be though.
The chimney kind of looks like someone standing looking down at you, which is equal parts creepy and cool-looking. Also, I love this drawing! Self portraits are wild, and kinda funky. One of my favorite ones is "Portrait of a German Officer" by Marsden Hartley; I think you might like him.
Hey mate, A) I think you did pretty well! And B) when I did my first portrait, I hated it, and it didn’t look anything like me, but I still kept it. Cause it was my first piece of digital art, and I felt like while it didn’t capture my physical appearance right, I felt it captured what I wanted to present. I think that’s what you did. :)
noses are the hardest for me to draw but I've noticed that people tend to shade in the nose instead of drawing it with harsh lines; shade in the shape and such of the nose- don't outline the shadows of the nose. i hope that made sense. art of course is interpretive and there is no true right way but i hope it helps!
Idk how I ended up here but you uploaded this on my birthday last year and since I'm a fan and watched it that day and I guess RUclips brought me back. Great artwork. Love your content. It's the frosting between my cheeks :D nom nom
i feel like i really love watching any drawing or painting video of yours cause we're on the same like.... wavelength i think?? or like at the same point in art.. i don't know, but i looove watching
john, i have to say i have never been more envious of someone. like if my teacher asked me who i want to be (literally) when i grow up.. i'd choose you 🚶♀️
I love your art style and all I'll say is that using blocky shapes to kind of build it up as a guide can help sometimes and using the erase tool for highlights is better than using white imo. Love your videos
Some advice is to use a mirror for self portraits cause there is something about drawing something real than by looking at a photo but I still really like, keep it up
I really like this self portrait. Looks like a caricature of you. I think your problem with the eye lies in its overal position and angle. Overall it is really good!
your style is so distinct and i feel like it really suits you!! i love being able to see your art journey and seeing you improve n figure out what you like to create, you’re very skilled and i admire your work :-] self portraits are definitely difficult, but it’s impressive that you free handed it and managed to stylize everything! i just wanted to give a few tips, only take em if you need: it helps a lot putting down guidelines first so that everything is more proportional and you see the bigger picture better. the cliche art circle and cross for a head really does make a difference, it helps you distinguish where the facial features go and keeps things a little more symmetrical. eyes are usually one eye apart from each other. its definitely scary but try flipping your canvas every once in a while, you can definitely see more mistakes ie if something is crooked or unsymmetrical. even just taking a break from drawing for a bit can help cuz when you get back to it you can work with a fresher mind. and like ive seen others say already, dont be afraid to go darker with shading! contrast can help make a piece for sure. sorry that was a lot haha, ive just been an artist for a while n i thought those tips could help john or anyone else that read this and wants to give drawing a go edit: LMAO i just saw him say dont bother telling him to do the guidelines whoops go off kryoz do ur little art thing
technically it's your left cheek, but when looking at the drawing it's the right most one. it seems hollow? as someone who has drawn portraits, it seems like maybe you need to bulk out that cheek bone a bit? it should help with making some of the other things feel more proportional. other than that your shading is awesome, just don't be afraid to go darker!
I'm just glad you're uploading more man, been watching since MoP days and it's nice to see you enjoy what content you're making. PS I think the drawing is banger
It's at a great point. If it was randomly showed to me I can tell that it's John drawing John. Realistic portraits (for me) are incredibly hard and I always sabotage any self portraits because of how I see myself. It's such a fine line because when you look at it you'll always want to go back and add/change something. That can really improve the piece or you regret the changes and see it as ruined. You have a lot more self confidence so I don't think anything i said applies. Personally I'd keep it black and white and save a colored portrait for a painted one. I challenge you to create a piece inspired by one of my photos that I can look at without extreme self loathing (jk). I don't know if there will be a part 2 or just social media posts but it was really interesting to watch and listen as you worked through it. Always love your art videos. :)
self portraits are always hard because often we have a hard time being objective with a view we have such familiarity with. also idk if this is common, but I default draw the way I look if that makes sense? Like the way i see my lips is how I tend to draw lips and junk like that. ps- maybe having the camera on the left would be better since you are right handed?
hell yeah i was just thinking at 3 this morning that i wish there were more kryoz art videos i could watch, play in the background while i draw, repeat
Honestly when you stated talking towards the end and you said you were stating to like it less and less confused me because holy shit it just kept getting better and better! I think it looks off because the pupils are different sizes. Also, HELL YEAH KEEP GOING! Maybe you can make two, one with color and one without
Your very talented John I mean your an artist in multiple category’s man keep it up no matter what video you post on any channel is still great content thanks for what you do man and keep it coming bro
Awesome work dude. Truly inspiring. I think regular art would be an amazing addition. Maybe once a month or every 2 months. Could be really cool to see you progress and adapt your style.
Ö would you ever consider drawing (more like doodling or something?) your followers based on a Spotify playlist or something? It would be cool to see how you’d picture a random person based on their music taste lol
You should think about maybe trying out tattoos, your style is new school would be very lit, you can get a starter matchine for 50$ bucks with practice pads
it looks amazing, but the reason it looks off rn is because the face is to big. if you shrink your eyes and mouth it'll look more natural. but you're 100% better at this then me so hope it helps!!
i would love to see a self-portrait painting just to see the chaos of mixing your own skin tone
You feel so much more natural on camera now man, it pairs so well with commentary. Also god damn your styling is awesome
I love your art style man. It’s unique in a unique kind of way.
Ah yes, the floor is made of floor
Ah yes, you used unique in the same sentence two times, that's unique
@@Sapphire_bow Ah yes, wall is made of wall
His artstyle is different, it's pretty different in a different way
The uniqueness of his uniqueness makes this art very unique in a sort of ... unique way

Sometimes I forget homie is mad talented and it’s so cool every time I’m reminded
You should draw your friends more. Those always end up really well

hey! small tip fo krita, theres a tool that looks likea little pin, if you press that and go into i think its aditional settings you get a list of things that are fun
Kryoz doing art.
Never expected it, thoroughly welcoming it, always willing to support it! ♥️
he does/ has done more art on his second channel! (morekryoz)
your stylisation of certain things is always sick
You’re really good at what you do!! I’m an artist myself and I really love you’re style. Thank you for being the way you are John. 😁

came for the art, stayed for the great hands 👌
OO have you ever tried charcoal arts, seeing your process of digital looks similar to the way I do my charcoal portraits!
Idk how I ended up here but you uploaded this on my birthday last year and since I'm a fan and watched it that day and I guess RUclips brought me back. Great artwork. Love your content. It's the frosting between my cheeks :D nom nom

This is such a cool style, kinda different from your other stuff but kinda similar too
Honestly when you stated talking towards the end and you said you were stating to like it less and less confused me because holy shit it just kept getting better and better! I think it looks off because the pupils are different sizes. Also, HELL YEAH KEEP GOING! Maybe you can make two, one with color and one without
I never took kryoz as an artist but he's got great skill

Awesome work dude. Truly inspiring. I think regular art would be an amazing addition. Maybe once a month or every 2 months. Could be really cool to see you progress and adapt your style.

Damn everytime he says man i dont like this or that im just thinking i wish i was half that good.. great content kryoz keep it up
Ö would you ever consider drawing (more like doodling or something?) your followers based on a Spotify playlist or something? It would be cool to see how you’d picture a random person based on their music taste lol
You should think about maybe trying out tattoos, your style is new school would be very lit, you can get a starter matchine for 50$ bucks with practice pads

He just whipped out the different eye style and flipped my world upside down haha
The left side is pretty good
This is awesome dude great job
maybe draw vanoss?
I know you feel something is off about the eye on the right, so try making the lower eyelid less rounded downward if you know what I mean
Bro got the squid game nails. Love em John
it looks amazing, but the reason it looks off rn is because the face is to big. if you shrink your eyes and mouth it'll look more natural. but you're 100% better at this then me so hope it helps!!
thats just his style ! its very abstract
i love this shit, keep up the good work kryoz
The camera angle is good but you should try to put it on your left so your hand isnt in the way when you draw
Why can I imagine a version of Take On Me’s video with this?
