Nice find! I've had one of these in my bathroom for 10 years. I like it! The reason your's has no bowl rinse is because it has the wrong fill valve. The proper fill valve sends a lot more water to the rim for bowl rinse. It sounds like the square toilet was a Rochelle. They are really cool. They take a rubber ball instead of a flapper. They can be had pretty reasonably.

I put a ball cock fill valve in this toilet and it has the same amount of bowl rinse as a 1st generation pressure lite.
