If for instance the police tryvto plant a different phone from the one that the accused was using before, then a new IME number would now be associated with the sim.
That is exactly what Mshololo is raising in court. The IMEI is like your ID number. It never changes and it is what you're identified by. Without the record of the IMEI, the phones could have been exchanged.
Mshololo missed two opportunities: Prison Head says phone discovered 18:00 and the accused says 21:00. In his answer to another question... the head says it was late in the evening. That was the chance. Secondly: All the time when phones are discovered from inmates, are they handed to SAPS? What was the interest with this particular one? Was there a particular request from the SAPS.
