    1. Preparation is the key. Collect everything about the subject before you argue. Write down notes, which can help you memorize the material.
    2. Outline your position. Beat the logic of your argument so you will know the strengths and weaknesses of your argument. Asking others for their opinion or post your argument on social media which is a quick way to get opposing point of view.
    3. Practice being emotionally triggered. Calming down is essential to help you listen to others. Only by listening can you bring up their weaknesses. To keep calm also helps you pick up the main point that are worth arguing thus increasing the efficiency of the argument.
    4. Simplify your argument by making it consumable. Syllogism is classic and easy to use.
    5. Use analogy to make your larger point and your values more convincing to others. Think about them and plan them before the argument.

This is really helpful for me especially now that I aspire to be a lawyer someday. I'm still on my senior year in high school and I know I've still got a long way to go, but I think the ability to argue well isn't just something that you'll acquire once you step in law school. It is a skill that should be honed with a lot of practice and a lot of exposure to different kinds of argument. Many says my preferred career path is going to be really tough, and I want to be ready when I begin pursuing it.
This video is a real game-changer in the way I argue. Now I'm wondering why this has few views. Your channel definitely deserves more recognition.
By the way, do you have any tips about how to argue well in an on-the-spot debate? Sorry for this lengthy comment, it's just that it has been a long time since a youtube video really helped me.

Hi Ian. I am having a first custody hearing on the 5th, and I am presentung pro se. I am prepared: reasonably related request and claims that I previously filed in my Pettition for modification of custody order . I served the pettition, affidavit, I requested transcripts for appeal (in case) I know what will be oponent's arguments and I am prepared for arguing. Question: I know oponent will go out of scope. Because I channel him that way, and I know that there is no other way for him to go. I know how to object that in deposition, but can you use the same objection rule in arguing? Such as: argument out of scope, imaterial and irrelevant? Or that is not how it is done.

  • @emilyandrews9857
    @emilyandrews9857 4 года назад

Wow! Impressive video, Ian. I once argued like a lawyer, only I used RUclips, not a courtroom. It happened when I was watching a movie clip of a horror film on RUclips, and I made a comment on how an African American man was betrayed by his girlfriend, but wasn't captured by her brother's aggressive methods, as it's "less pleasant", and I remarked that the girlfriend's pleasant methods weren't very pleasant. A commenter told me that the girlfriend was pretty and would rather date her as opposed to being captured by her brother. While I can concede to the fact that the girlfriend was pretty, I told the commenter that she is, however, a full-fledged liar.
It was then that we got into an argument in the RUclips comment section. I was trying to tell the commenter that love is the most powerful emotion there is, and that I have zero tolerance for people lying to others for selfish purposes, even though I can understand lying to protect someone or spare their feelings for obvious reasons, and lying to hide who you really are to some degree; whereas the commenter was "trying to set me straight" on what the scene was about, what the so-called logic behind it is, and that I take the "whole lying stuff way too seriously". When all else failed, I told the commenter the story of how I found out about the horror film, and it was through fandom sites and other videos in relation to the horror film. I also mention to the commenter that what the girlfriend did wasn't even in the name of love, which led me to the conclusion that everyone could/should want love in their lives.
Apparently, the commenter must've fully understood where I was going with it, because the commenter wanted to get to know me, and liked that "[I'm] a romantic". Of course, the great thing about writing or typing platforms, like RUclips, is that it gives you time to think about what you want to say before saying it. Not to mention that it was frustrating, tedious, and extensive when I was trying to explain myself to the commenter.

"How to argue like a lawyer"
    1. *Prepare for the argument*
Research subject the argument BEFORE argument
    2. *Know both sides of argument*
(theirs & yours & prep for each, support yours facts, undermine their facts)
    2. *Question everything*
ie every claim, fact and proof and conclusion
    3. *Remain calm* slow down speaking, keep listening
(Practice not to be emotionally triggered ie don't get angry to what's said )
    4. *Establish common ground first*
(identify facts not in dispute, then focus on the main points of dispute)
Choose 3 main points (most time)/dismiss theirs (small points=least time)
    5. *Simplify arguments so easy to consume by judge* (audience)
Process: Frame argument (Outline it) >logical argument from Outline
Use strengths and weaknesses of both sides of arguments
Use Silogisms (A+B=C) and use analogies (good for audience influencer)
