- As certain parts on older computers fail and rare working examples command higher and higher prices, and as people want to integrate their retro machines into modern life, many new projects have popped up to meet those needs. This panel features members of the community that have created new hardware, firmware, and software solutions to breathe new life into old machines, not just restoring functionality but enhancing quality of life in ways unthought of when those systems were new.
Panelists were:
@helfire23
@ianpolpo
@jeffpiepmeier9411
@JoesComputerMuseum
Tony Kuker
...and were moderated by @RonsCompVids

Many thanks to the VCF Midwest committee and Talks Technical Team for their support in putting this panel together!
This is such a fantastic topic!
Great panel!
Nothing like having Ron with his Mr Rodgers calm and welcoming moderator delivery to make this a true warm and friendly fireside chat !
Encore une belle découverte depuis la France ! Et en plus on parle d'avenir pour nos machines 🙂
Ever read the book "soul of a new machine" ? It's a good read , as an ex engineer who gave up on engineering as a career (trained my h1b replacement) I understand the burnout and the damage being used by a large corporation can do.
nice video! For the next time a hint for the sound guy. Please introduce a low cut/high pass into all microphone channels. This will improve the mic touching sounds.
Duly noted. Did a high pass on 100HZ but I guess it wasn't enough.
Complicating matters is that there was a very loud celebration two rooms away, which bled into the audio. Did what I could :-)
@@JimLeonard the best way would be instruct the speakers to hold the mics way closer to their mouths so you can reduce the gain on the mixer which then means less blead less feedback and less handlling noise
@@MastaTabs This was done :-) Also used an automixer that reduces the gain on all microphones 8db for the non-active speakers. I just didn't have good control of the room (no overhead speakers, so we set up front-firing PAs) and then I try to address issues in post.
Sometimes it works very well; see the RUclips panel from this year. People spoke loudly, and a full room of audience absorbed the reverb.
@@JimLeonard oh how fun...
@@JimLeonard I wanted to shout out to whoever did the editing of the video, I appreciate the audio was switched at various points for intelligibility, and have a lot of empathy for dealing with room issues. Situations like this are full of tough tradeoffs -- the mics themselves may be subject to handling noise, but if you put them on stands on a table, people don't get close enough...
Never mind, I thought this was gonna be a fear factory video😂
And yet, fear and factories are both discussed.
56:01 woot! Gutbomb is such a great help to so many ❤
