NEFL Eagle Cam - Legacy and the Hawk (Legacy is fine!)

  • NEFL Eagle Cam 05/06/2021 - Legacy has already had an owl encounter and learned from it - today Legacy found out that the neighborhood hawk also likes to remind eagles that there are other raptors in the neighborhood! No worries, Legacy is fine! It's just a fact of life that young eagles have to learn to live with. Hawks too - for an example of the smaller NEFL raptor (quite possibly the same hawk that buzzed Legacy) getting pestered by even smaller birds, see AEF's video here: • RSH GETS DIVE BOMBED B...
    Thanks as always to the wonderful cam-ops!

    I imagine that raptors lead a tough life. They all want to survive, breed and protect their species. That's why, as humans, it is SO important to do all we can to care for these beautiful creatures. I find watching these nests can be difficult, but I have learnt so much, and knowledge is power. The more we know and understand, the more we can do. Infinite "thank yous" and much love to people who love animals!!

    Well, that hawk was mean. Poor Legacy has had to grow up a lot in the past week or so. She just now sat through a pretty harsh thunderstorm and is sitting in mom’s branch trying to dry her wings. Hope Dad will treat her with a fish to make his angel feel better.

    • @cmitchell8106
      @cmitchell8106  3 года назад +19

      It's not really "mean" the way humans can be mean - their behaviors are adaptive in ways we can guess at (but don't always fully understand) for sharing the same nesting area. "I'm here. I may be smaller than you, but you have to respect me just the same!" It happens every year and you see it at nests all over the place, and no one ever seems to get seriously hurt.
      The hawks in turn get dive-bombed by the smaller birds - in my neighborhood the smaller birds will chase the red-tailed hawks for several blocks! This morning Legacy learned to be more alert for signs that the hawk is around, an important lesson and part of growing up. And they do have to grow up fast - they'll fine-tune their skills over the next few years, but they've got to learn all the basics they need to survive that critical first year in a just few short months over the summer. 🙂

      Looked to me as if Legacy enjoyed the rain - even did some windsurfing in the nest!
      Sometimes I try to imagine what eagles would say if they had cameras on us.
      "Look at the poor thing - at 4 months not even walking around or running or anything, still crawling on the floor! And making that awful sound half the night! Why don't they feed it when it cries like that? Can't feed by itself either. Wonder how they manage to grow up at all!"

    • @marypritchett115
      @marypritchett115 3 года назад +9

      Don’t feel too sorry for not so little Legacy. Last night after she’d eaten a squirrel Samson brought a fish to the nest that Gabby announced she would like to have. Legacy was on the nest and claimed the fish for herself. After a short skirmish Gabby went back to her perch. Legacy nearly fell asleep guarding her fish. Finally, she gave up and went up to a branch leaving fish. Gabby naturally went to take care of the leftover. A huge fight ensued with our little Legacy sticking her talons in mom’s wing while biting her on the head and forcefully pulling on Gabby’s head feathers. Ouch! Mom remained calm and continued with her meal. Legacy began chittering so Gabby fed pieces of fish to her baby in between bites. We can’t imagine disrespecting our parents like that but apparently in the eagle world it is accepted if not encouraged behavior.

      I think maybe a eaglet fares better when there is a sibling to learn with. They seem to feed information from each other. Maybe these parents are trying to teach survival but the mom completely ignored Legacy for 3 days and she was very hungry and begged every minute. I saw her throw up after she finally got something to eat from faithful Sampson. She has always been a very beautiful and special eaglet. She doesn't seem to care much about soaring and seems to like her nest. I think she got too hungry and maybe frightened when she discovered the other nest and the parents ran her away after tolerating her for a while.

    • @cmitchell8106
      @cmitchell8106  3 года назад

      At 15 weeks old this is about the time that instinct and the growing-up process naturally drives them to leave home. Legacy may yet come back for a visit or two but the summer months are critical for the youngsters to learn where food is found and how to obtain it before winter sets in. The nest-tree is a great "nursery" but the food sources are elsewhere, so as much as we'd enjoy a visit that's actually a learning opportunity wasted. The young may hang out in the general nest area for a bit or travel many hundreds of miles in the learning process. Samson and Gabby will also take off soon for a sort of "vacation" (well-earned!) - last summer Samson came back in August and Gabby in early September. If Legacy IS spotted you can be sure they'll post it at the main nest-page, nefleaglecam.org 🙂

      I use the arrows to try to direct people where in the screen to look for the incoming flight, whether it's eagle or hawk or owl. I try to put them up early enough in the video to direct the eye to where the action will be, and then make it "disappear" just before the bird enters the field of view so it doesn't interfere with seeing the flight itself. Other times I use them to point out a flight across the screen where the eagle is distant enough that the viewer might miss it. It's a tip I'd picked up from other sources - I'm sorry you didn't find it helpful, but I am always open to suggestions on how to do these better and make the viewing experience more fun. 🙂

      Happens all year, every year. And observed at multiple nests. Owls at night, hawks in the daytime - just the price the eagles pay for being an apex predator. :)

      All good training though - acquiring and practicing the flight skills for instantly recovering and flying away safely will serve Legacy well in the future - if a branch breaks, or in a storm, as well as dealing with pesky hawks and owls! 😀

    Hello, any experts among us?! Will we meet Legacy again? Think, she's outside the nest for a good week now...

    • @cmitchell8106
      @cmitchell8106  3 года назад +2

      Legacy flew off (beautifully) just before noon Saturday 5/22 (the one day I only had my laptop and no screen recorder 😕). It's possible there may be another visit but each eaglet behaves differently: last year Jules fledged and left the area on the same day while Romy hung around for about 3 weeks after fledging. This nest has been observed since 2008 and the last-seen age averages 15 - 18 weeks with a low of 11 weeks and a high of 20 weeks. If I had to bet I'd say Legacy is off for good, exploring the Intracoastal Waterway, meeting other fledglings and figuring out where the best "groceries" might be found, but she could come roaring back the instant after I hit "send" on this as well.😄
      Samson and Gabby will get their well-deserved vacation time and if the past 2 years are any guide Samson will be back first in August to start all over again. And you never know about the future - Papa Samson returned as an adult to this nest where he was hatched in 2013, and his sibling was seen visiting the nest in 2017.

      @@cmitchell8106 Hello,
      thank you very much for the information. Good to know, that there may be hope to see our Legacy again. It's crazy, I fell in love with her and was surprised many times what her parents, Samson and Gabby, tought of when raising her. Quite different from so-called scientists who often reduce animals only to their instincts.
      One notices, each of the bald eagles also has its own character. Clever, lovable animals, from which we humans can only learn for a better.
      All the best and love furthermore!
