      I think it has to do with the Dutch social contract. This is such a densely populated country so we HAVE to share space. The contract is that we tolerate/accept what doesn't bother us and actively try to be normal so we don't bother others. At least, that is how I always interpreted it. So what he is saying makes perfect sense. Do not worry about stuff that does not bother you and doesn't harm anybody and you will be left alone as well as long as you do not annoy others.

      Well for being late there are cultures who just don’t care because they just are that relaxed.. my dad is from the antilles specifically curacao and it’s different there as if you meet up with someone you’ll just see if you make it if not no big deal we’ll meet up another day.. in my own case too with my ADHD it often gets quite hard to be on time because i just plan it out wrong or make a mistake somewhere

    • @r0der1ck_0nl1ne
      @r0der1ck_0nl1ne 3 года назад +64

      Not really. In a lot of countries an appointment is made by approximation, politeness trumps directness and ‘your word’ is dependent on the situation in which it’s given. Like in a work setting it’s non-negotiable for example but privately it can be more loose. So the Netherlands comes across as a very strikt country for a lot of foreigners.

    • @nachtmaerie
      @nachtmaerie 3 года назад +37

      The way I had this explained to me is that in countries where transport is often unreliable, time is an approximation, because some days the train might just not show up, or it will show up an hour late. Seeing that that happens to _everybody_ there, everybody understands that sometimes there's nothing you could do, and so being ''late'' is more often accepted because that is simply how the ball rolls there.

    How to annoy a Dutch.
    When meeting a dutch person, say: "Oh, you must be a dutch speaker, I love dutch". They're happy you noticed. Before they respond, say: "You must be from Belgium!". At that point they start to be annoyed and will correct you. "No, I from the netherlands." And you respond "Netherlands? Where is that?". A this point nobody can help you anymore.

    Since we’re accepting of a lot of personal choices, those things just don’t fall under “normal” to us, but rather are a personal part of a person. “Be normal” is more, in (at least my) understanding, “be a decent, respectful person and don’t bother other people” rather than what I’ve noticed is a trend in other countries: “be a [enter type/religion/etc.] person”.

    i have the feeling that Dutch people being upset when people break their word is because people don't take "promises" lightly. If you're not sure you're able to do something or be somewhere on time, you need to communicate this directly. "I'm not sure I'll be able to make that in time" is a perfectly acceptable response to an invitation or an assignment. Also things like "I'll arrive around 8 tonight" usually mean "ill be there at 7.50" with Dutch people

    Being on time is a sign of respect in my opinion. If we agree to be somewhere at 2 o'clock then I know that the other person made the effort to get there on time. So I also make sure that I make the effort to be on time. To me that is a no-brainer. However, 5 minutes late is usually accepted. More than 5 minutes is indeed annoying if you do not let the other person, who is waiting for you, know that you are late. So if you are expecting to be late more than 5 minutes, just send a message or give a ring to inform that person.

    1. Not getting to the point is a real annoyance
    2. Knowing Dutch yet not bothering to speak it (yes Middle-East and Africa, that is directed mostly towards you haha)
    3. Not bothering to learn Dutch at all even if you are in the Netherlands for a long time or visit every year (Yes Germany and France, directed at you)
    4a. Making too much noise in a 'stilte coupe' (train), it clearly tells you to be silent, shut up already or move to another train car!
    4b. Using your phone or other device and having the sound turned on (even if it's the clicking sounds of buttons) while on public transportation
    5. Telling how great your country is and being so much better (Yes America, that's directed at you) (And no, it isn't about comparing so much. It's more making it sound you are so much better)
    6. Not being on time
    7. Wanting to do something but not having a plan
    8. Not keeping to your word
    9. Holland isn't the entire country, please stop saying it is. We don't call your country by a single area or city and claim that's the entire country either.
    10. Spending money while it clearly not being needed would anger most Dutch people
    11. Walking on cycle paths not specifically, but if there is a perfectly fine sidewalk then get your ass over there and don't block the road for cyclists and other road users!
    12a. Not getting in line but just cutting the line is a huge no-no. Regardless who you are, you get in the back of the line just like everyone else. If you get the permission to move a spot then feel free to take it. But never cut the line!
    12b. Don't hold the line, get your ass moving as soon as you have payed. No one wants to be waiting forever just because you decided to take your sweet time.
    13. Speak your mind, don't beat around the bush
    14. Be yourself and show the real you, don't try to be overly friendly or show some fake personality. It's a disrespectful thing to do
    15. Don't mix up a German and a Dutch person or their languages, you won't like the result
