The biggest transition from flying GA birds is the low inertia / high drag of an ultralight. When you chop the power, you gotta point that nose waayy down.
Hello !!! I am another LEGAL EAGLE builder. I am at the end of construction, and I am going to do weight and balance. Can you tell me how far the CENTER OF GRAVITY was from you? to have it as a reference. I really appreciate your time. Hugo.
There's a great deal of head motion in this video, which is natural 'cause you're looking around. Why not put another camera on one of the struts, facing you, so you can edit some static shots of you as you fly. It'll give some stability to your videos and you'll be the star of the show!
i noticed the horizontal brace between the jury is missing. have you noticed if the struts resonate without them? it would sure be easier to get in and out of mine without the brace on the left side.
can you tell me about your fuel system? wing tank? fuel filter? then to a reservoir tank? then?? I am researching this plane which I like the best along with the 1/2 VW engines, but so far I haven't seen any gas tanks I like, I dot like gas can strapped in behind seat, that's why I am asking, so I know what I am looking at & might could duplicate it in future
Sure thing. I used a Team Mini Max 6 gallon tank (5 gals + air) haha. It's in the wing. Make sure you have the tank on hand when building because it's about a half inch wider than the root bay in the original LE plans. From there the fuel runs through a filter (temporary setup in the video) and then to a header tank (JAZ dragster fuel cell). I did this because I didn't like the air bubbles my 37hp Casler-built engine (single Zenith carb) was pulling through the gas line, and as a backup fuel gauge. That's pretty much it. Good luck and blue skies!
Thank You. Very understood, need "expansion" room, for side comment, are you familiar with Smokey Yunik? Like using 1" fuel lines which might hold extra couple gallons, plus had inflatable bladder in fuel tank so would pass tech in NASCAR, decades ago. Then deflated during racing, he also "chilled" fuel, so when it got warm expanded, and would have full tank even after several laps. Lol..... Be safe and thank you again.
@@leirbaggage, that's what I like to hear. I never really liked control cable setup that the original plans called for, so I'm happy to have found this alternative

@@leirbaggage Thanks for checking into that for me. I see they have A-930 push pull but not sure about the difference, I can call. If ever up in the Hernando,MS area let me know I'd love to check out a flying LE. I should be ready for testing in the spring! Thanks again, D
firstname lastname No. They can only be flown from dawn till dusk per Part 103. www.eaa.org/en/eaa/aviation-communities-and-interests/ultralights-and-ultralight-aircraft/getting-started-in-ultralight-flying/about-faa-part-103-for-ultralights
Your aircraft may not needed to be registered or certified, and you may not need to have an airman's certificate or a current medical, all legal per FAR Part 103, but while flying you do still need to comply with the pertinent rules of the air, spelled out in FAR Part 91, of which, "buzzing" your friends is clearly a violation of ***Federal LAW*** and I suggest you familiarize yourself with that, lest behaviors like this lead the FAA to revoke FAR Part 103
BS. 500 feet from any person, place or thing, per FAR's. Do YOU ** know** what his altitude was? REALLY??? Only he does. I "suggest" you lighten up on the guy...and ultralights in general. The first paragraph of your comment suggests to me you are not a fan of part 103 operations.
I'd like FAR 103 to stay just the way it's presently written. Busting FAR 91 ( watch the video again and note the treetops -- you know of any near-500 ft trees? ) is going to inspire the FAA to either revoke it or ammend it to include some sort of demonstrated knowledge of flight rules and basic airmanship. Oh, speaking of airmanship ... I repeat, watch the video again and note places where an engine failure would have resulted in an forced landing in someone's back yard. Is that good airmanship??
Apology ( sort of ) - OK, granted it's been 23 years since I've been in aviation and the rules have changed since that time. I looked it up and it says, : FAR 91.1(e) This part does not apply to any aircraft or vehicle governed by part 103 of this chapter. So my comments about "busting" FAR Part 91 were unwarrented and out of place and I apologize for them. However, the apology does not extend to my comments about airmanship, and I think the poster's video title is self-evident to his lack of respect ( or lack of knowledge - which has the same effect ) for that aspect. Also my opinions about the FAA's attitude toward this sort of flight behavior and their probable reactions to them. Believe me, I don't want any more restrictive part 103 and my gut instinct is that this lack of aircraft and airman regulation is probably a sort of an experiment by them to see what develops, and if they don't like what they see developing the experiment will certainly end after some innocent bystanders get killed.
Sweet flight. That thing looks like it flies nice, I would love to build a legal eagle sometime.
Thanks Sam. It's a real pleasure to fly. Not a lot of power and a fairly slow roll rate, but very forgiving if you respect it.

I haven't noticed any. I considered installing a diagonal jury strut or a quick connect to still allow easy entry.
I am building an XL and noticed your cable for the ailerons. Do you mind telling me what kind it is and where you got it?
Thanks, Bill
Mr Bill Martin, They are push/pull cables from aircraft spruce. They really simplify the setup and give the ailerons a nice feel.

Did you have any difficulty modifying the design of the LE to incorporate the push-pull cables?
No, it was pretty straight forward. I think it's easier than the traditional rigging.
