hi! i travelled by taking the train from matsumoto to shin-shimashima, then bus from shin-shimashima to kamikochi. i only reserved bus tickets from kamikochi back to shin-shimashima, because the website said that reservation is necessary for that. but kamikochi is closed during winter months, remember to check against your trip dates!
