  • How GOOD is Caitlin Clark Actually?
Clark entered the WNBA after having the greatest college basketball career ever and just arguably had the greatest first month in the WNBA ever. But you would not know that by the way the media is covering Caitlin Clark. She has been used as a political weapon more than a basketball player. And for us fans who actually enjoy basketball it has left us scratching our heads wondering… how good is Caitlin Clark actually?

I really appreciate your more in depth perspective as compared to most. In that vein, what if you interviewed a black woman fan of the WNBA (not a new fan) and get their perspective on why there seems to be such reluctance to accept and/or embrace CC as a good thing for the WNBA (see Sheryl Swoops, DT, ESPN commentary, etc)

I’m from Iowa and I have watched her since high school . When she started getting rated, she pulled up to a school game and they started chanting “overrated”. She went to the bench and said the coach “ I am not coming out of this game” . She scored 60 points . She doesn’t take negativity lightly. This girl will break every WNBA record when it is said and done . Why is she always double teamed? Because they respect her

Particularly the coach’s seeming push to not allow her more freedom to play her game. CC is standing alone as one of the best at outset of her career despite the ineptitude surrounding her. Boston has finally picked up steam but has a ways to go. On the surface, Mitchell's play seems great, but it's hindering the flow of offensive production. The other players, well, are just along for the ride. Your assessment on the lack of strength and conditioning is spot on, but that's how it goes in their league with timing. The use of her off-hand and predictable drives/shots are correct as well. That will be corrected with adequate time and quality coaching. The one glaring stat that everyone defaults to as a negative in her game is turnovers. Realistically, it couldn't be further from the truth. I'd humbly ask if you'd do a complete breakdown on the mishandled passes that ultimately are charged to CC.

When CC stated, “they have woke up a monster”, it could be that she was referring to the “monster fan base” that follows her and the “media monster” that would create other narratives from that disgruntled fan base. I say this because I’ve never heard CC talk about herself in a way that lifts herself up above her teammates, which a comment like that implies if taken that way. She’s is loyal to her team and it shows in her game. It’s never about herself!! She makes that clear on the court and in her media comments!! To tell her coach that the monster in her has awakened due to a snub gives off a “I’m better than you” look. No!! CC never puts herself above anyone, except on the stat line!!

And it says a lot that she’s achieving what she has achieved while being coached by Sides and having to work with a couple of her teammates who aren’t great. It’ll be exciting to see how she continues to develop. Won’t win ROY because the media decides it but still, I think she wins by a landslide just based on the history of who has won it and their numbers. But the majority of the athletes we know today didn’t win it. It’s an overhyped recognition.

And the Olympic team is another. She also has a better statistical output than every other guard on the Olympic team.

If you look a little closer at those turnover numbers you see a lot of missed passes that go on her TO numbers. Boston and Smith and others have acknowledged they are getting use to ending up with the ball when they would never get it before. You can cut those TO numbers in half. The middle game is an issue! Those weird lay-ups have been around for a long time!

Most of CC’s turnovers are because the players receiving a pass from CC aren’t able to catch them.
Boston was under basket and missed easy shots multiple times.
Wheeler should have never gone into the game because she can’t play.
Smith can’t guard Reese and should have traded assignments with Boston.

She's soon going to be the best guard in the league. She already would be if they still played the game as a non-contact sport. There was a time just a few decades ago when a player was considered to "own" the area of the court under her and within a circle that would be described by her elbows if she held the ball to her chest with her elbows extended and she rotated her body such that her elbows then drew a circle in the air, projected down to the floor. She "owned" that cylinder and opposing players could not move her without fouling her and on the other hand if she controlled the ball and happened to elbow an opposing player as she twisted her body, it was their fault for having encroached on that cylinder and the foul if any would be on them. Today, the "bigs" routinely force a smaller player to move by bodily force and a player with the ball has to take care not to elbow an opponent who has penetrated her aforementioned cylinder. This puts a normally sized player at an extreme disadvantage vs many of the monster bigs playing today.

I don't have a crystal ball and no one else does either about CC's future. But I do have a feel from her past record in college and current rookie record she's looking good. I think her biggest problem is also her greatest asset to the WNBA. That being her fans, which are PLENTIFUL to say the least! But they do tend to be male and males tend to be more aggressive and assertive. Some WNBA veterans don't seem to be pleased with Caitlin's extreme popularity and fan accolades. The veterans have been around for MANY years without it. I do smell some jealousy and distain. Hopefully they get over it.

Hey Gene I thought about this and other videos regarding CC, and I think she has let's say boy high school freshman skills but is obviously playing with women. CC is quick and her ball handling and passing skills are certainly very very high. At some her teammates need to adjust and she needs to have a better understanding of what her teammates can handle. Thanks for the content.

Yeah, her coach in Indy is trash. All her teammates are scrubs except Aliyah Boston. She's going to be the Luka Doncic of WNBA. These things take time, it doesn't happen over night.

Yes, she should have been drafted #1 by the defending champs.
She does make the same hand gesture as Luka to the refs when she doesn't get a call.

It doesn't matter if she's an average player or the best player in the league. What matters is that he has a game that people like.People like her because you can see that she has a desire to win, that she wants to be a leader and also that she always wants to improve.I like his shooting style, I also like his passing ability and that's enough for me.

Love it! Let's talk relevance. Just because Caitlin has some set patterns to her attack and movements while important to the defense against her, she will adjust because well she has to or die. This is not a person who has done that her entire BBall life. As to turnovers it's sad that her teammates just have hands of steel and can't handle her passes. That will change too. Give it and her sometime.

All are good points ,but the reality, the coaching some of her teammates are horrible, why not put 2 times defensive player Celeste Taylor in the game instead of Wheeler, Smith need to go ,Sides need to go .To be honest, trade Wheeler and Smith for Alyssa Pili of Minnesota lynx. Something need to change real quick

I don't give as much credence to raw numbers as I do to efficiency. She has superficially impressive numbers with so-so efficiency; not terrible, not excellent, but it teeters from game to game. There is promise there, though.
