  • We went to our autistic daughter's second favorite store. Her stim of swinging her arms next to other people makes us a little nervous. We need to get her new winter clothes because she is growing so fast! #autism #weefam #stimming

    Immediately I love how you both laughed about the playground situation. I'm a parent of two autistic kids and it's okay to find things funny and have a sense of humor about things. My son once screamed in a crowded elevator bc 3 teenage girls were talking inappropriately and nobody had the nerve to say something.... but my son let out a short scream, not even making eye contact with anyone and goes right back standing there all normal. It was quite hilarious, everybody laughed about it. Laughter is medicine!

      I feel like sometimes the things that kids do are so silly and funny. We love all her quirks and stims so it’s easy to chuckle and just love them.
      Hahah that is great!! Sometimes I have extra appreciation that kids just so freely express themselves however they see fit. It’s can sometimes be those situations that we as adults wish we could. 😂

    She was so cute trying on those boots and I love how she knows what she likes!
    When I read the title I was like "how can someone be scared of her stimming?" and then you told the story and you guys told the story and explained it so well. And I can relate so much. Our oldest used to get so excited when she'd see other kids and had no concept of personal space combined with non stop flaping and we had this social story that used "space invaders" to explain personal space and I think I was saying "Space invader! Space invader!" for a solid two years before it started to click. I know we definitely scared our fair share of people.

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  5 лет назад +5

      She has strong preferences and makes her point very clear 😂
      This is a fairly new thing for us so it’s never happened in public. That’s a great phrase to use for personal space! I just mentioned it to her and she actually listened and backed away a bit then continued adventuring through the aisles.
      We really love her newly developed love for kiddos but have to now work on boundaries/personal bubble.

      @@TheWeeFamily Shoes have always been so big around here too and shoe shopping is one of my favorite things, so it made it extra cool seeing Braylee loving her shoes too!
      And yeah, personal space can be such a hard one to learn. It's like you don't think about it until it's not quite typical and then it can be so hard to explain! It's so great that she's interested in other kids though. That's awesome to hear!

      Someday I'll Sleep Autism Vlogs That's a really clever turn of phrase!
      I'm visually impaired so, though in a different way, I had to keep personal space in mind myself. I would have this tendancy to get right up close to people when talking, I guess so I could clearly see them.

    I have high functioning autism, adhd, ocd, and aspergers
    It is very hard to live with
    Some adhd signs were violence, getting easily distracted, anger, hyperactivity, and laughing at bad behavior
    Signs of autism was hand flapping, speech delay, humming, rocking, and also sensitivity to noises and textures
    Signs of ocd was being very complulsive towards cleaning, and also making sure things stay perfectly straight
    Signs of aspergers were unknown but we only knew I had aspergers because my doctor did a brain scan

    Gosh she’s cute. My kiddo loves to watch Abbie Mass, and she’s learned about stimming. We saw a young man at Disney the other day and she looked at the boy for a second and said, “Is he stimming?” I told her he was. She could identify it as a stim even though it’s not one that Abbie does. I was pretty impressed with her. My point is, what you and folks like The Mass Squad are doing is very educational. My 6 year old was like, “cool an autistic person.” Instead of being worried about the differences, she just smiled at him. Instead of being afraid because someone was acting different than her, she could identify what was going on. And she thinks that autism is no big deal as far as she’s concerned, they’re just people. Her ultimate goal is to be friends with ALL the people. That’s thanks to you guys...and FB algorithms that suggested them to me for absolutely no reason at all. Thanks FB!! Keep up what you’re doing. You all rock!
    P.s. her eyes in that cover photo or thumbnail or whatever, are angelic! Who could be afraid of that sweet singing angel?

      That's so amazing your daughter is taking that kind of approach, especially at such a young age. I wish more kids were like that but of course you've given her education on autism. Some parents know about it and somewhat what it means but don't bother to teach their kids about it or to love/accept everyone. If my daughter had more kids like that around her,it would be easier in her and me. Sometimes kids ask me why she yells,why she runs around so much,why she doesn't always answer them or at least appropriately. I find myself explaining things constantly but I don't mind because I can only hope that educating kids will make them better people in the future.

      Well, I can feel the calm in these videos. I've enjoyed seeing your wee family! I remember people getting upset if I was humming, rocking, wiggling. Having alone time in my room with my mirror as I explored my reflection was a great way to decompress. I remember name calling and constant stress and pressure to become what others wanted me to be. And now...I'm masked so well I barely even know myself.
      So, I applaud you both and love her wonderful spirit.

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  4 года назад

      That’s so unfortunate that people would be bothered by things like that. Mirrors help a lot with recognizing emotions and facial expressions or even practicing her speech in front of a mirror so that she can see herself.

    You two are fantastic parents. I wish I grew up in more recent time instead of the nineties. I was misdiagnosed as ADHD as a child and I didn’t know I had autism until recently, so holding back my stims became second nature to me. I held them back for DECADES even at home alone until I forgot that it was something I needed to do. I didn’t know why I couldn’t just be an adult, didn’t understand my own feelings or others even though I could definitely FEEL them. Didn’t know why I couldn’t make any relationships work. I had a horrible self-esteem and even worse depression and anxiety. If you get told that you won’t succeed and that you’re a piece of trash your whole life, eventually you start to believe it.
    It’s so confusing and frustrating knowing there’s something wrong but not being able to put your finger on it, especially if that means you can’t explain your problems adequately to medical professionals when trying to get help which causes misdiagnosis after misdiagnosis.
    I’ve started to let myself stim at home and it’s been so liberating! I think my body started doing them on its own within minutes, and it immediately brought back memories from my very early childhood. In fact, I’ve started remembering some of my stims from then, and I’m just listening to my body and moving how it wants to move.
    Thanks for being so understanding for your child, if you aren’t on the spectrum yourself, it’s hard to grasp just how much it means.

    As someone diagnosed with autism in adulthood (but obviously having had it as a kid and it been missed), I'm happy to see someone that sings a lot like I did and still do. My parents used to call it 'chanting' and used to tell me off for it like 'Jade stop chanting!' not a good approach, but obviously they were unaware that it wasnt something I could help, as there was so little understanding back in the early 90s and I wasn't even diagnosed with anything due to being good at talking and eye contact. I've actually got worse at eye contact the older I've got and can now no longer do it, which my psychiatrist told me is autistic regression?! Mad that it can still happen over the age of 20! I've also got bad with loud noises (fire alarms, electric drills, etc) which I was fine with as a kid. But I learnt to eat with a knife and fork, go to the bathroom on time and sleep through the night (all things I didn't fully master until I was about 14, if I'm completely honest! Because my parents would tell me off, I hid things from them as much as I could by hiding soiled clothes until they were dry, refusing to eat, etc). I actually displayed no symptoms until the age of two and a half, which looking back must have been a point of regression, so skills I hadn't yet got the hang of at that age, I never picked up fully until much later, but those skills ain't gone yet now I'm pushing 30, so I'll take them over eye contact and coping with busy places, bright lights and loud noises any day 😂 but yeah, I guess the point of this post is that sometimes we gotta take the stims and regression in some areas, in order to continue seeing real progress in other areas, as I get the impression that I wouldn't have come as far in some aspects if I hadn't regressed in others and if I'd stopped stimming altogether. I also count myself lucky that I had speech when I first regressed and that I didn't lose it! Positivity is key, I guess...

      Thank you for sharing all of that and your experience with us! I like your name, it’s Braylee’s middle name 🙂
      Our girl is definitely always singing or vocal stimming and we let her do her thing. It’s pretty enjoyable for us as well. Regression can be so difficult, sometimes we don’t notice that it happened because it’s like skills are lost slowly with Braylee. We figure that she can’t focus on everything all at once so regressions will happen and stimming helps her stay regulated and lets her express whatever she’s feeling so it works out. It feels like it’s all about balance. Positivity make s a big difference.

      I’m 21 now and I was diagnosed when I was 16 because the signs weren’t picked up when I was a child because eventhough I was a late walker, I was an early talker (and a chatterbox) also I was a good baby however I regressed when I was 3 and began to have meltdowns. But recently I found my school reports from high school and primary school and my primary school reports literally show all the signs of Autism, like I didn’t really socialise with anyone but, in my second year of primary school, I made friends with a small group of people but would only talk about stuff I liked also I had major issues with concentration and could only stay focused working with a small group of people but I got misdiagnosed as having dyspraxia because one of my signs was trouble with motor skills

    Wow, her Stims are so similar to my 4 year olds. It's so weird, I'm feeling all maternal watching this. My son has socked his brother a few times. We say personal space often. He gets in people's faces and has gotten hit a few times by other kids for invading their space.

    • @TheWeeFamily
      @TheWeeFamily  3 года назад +1

      That’s a good reminder. We often notice that she’s not fully aware of her placement in space which is common and sensory related too. But also involves the social skills to really be conscious of personal space (or she understands and chooses not to). Lots of things at play there. It usually doesn’t even get this close, but sometimes it just happens.

    Those boots are so cute. My daughter loves to look in the mirror n make faces n now that she's lost a few teeth she likes to look at her mouth in the mirror. She has also licked the mirror,but it was the one in n out bathroom. She's also really interested in other little kids ,which she wasn't when she was younger than 4. She runs up to them n runs circles around them but is just starting to say "hi" n sometimes her name but has never understood how to engage with them. I've never been able to use her clothes from that season the year before because she's always growing so much. She's going into a size 13 shoe n she's only been 6 for 3 months. She's also a size 7/8 but some of them don't even fit. She's pretty much always been a size or two above her age since she was 2. Brayle/Braylee ( thought I heard u spell it on the phone with only one e at the end but not sure) is so stinking cute. I love her little style n personality.

      Missing teeth always prompt lots of mirror time around here. She just loves looking at her teeth and the changes. Who can blame her, it’s pretty cool to see what’s going on.
      Braylee has always been pretty small so even at 8 years old she still wears 13 in shoes. She’s been in the same growth curve, just petite. David and I aren’t tall people so she won’t be either 🙂
