Bomberlink would have made a very faithful SOR4, but I bet it wouldn't have evolved the formula as much as what we currently got. I love both SoRR and SoR4, though. I think the job done by Guard Crush games advanced the series' gameplay in the right ways with additions like being able to juggle enemies, the way specials work now where you can get your spent life back if you don't get hit, and the combo counter where if you're good enough you can even chain the entire level and rack up a huge score (and extra lives in the process), it all makes the game very replayable and gives the player an incentive to improve. A game like this could still be released across new consoles and as far back as the Mega CD if they cared to do so. Such a shame that Sega don't seem to understand console gaming beyond Sonic.

I wish a miracle would happen and Sega would officially release the game and make ports for actual consoles. Great review as always dude! This game deserves much more love! Maybe someone will port it for the XBox Series S/X?
Hell of a job by these guys. Sticking with what the originals so great, with heavy refining and expansion upon the games with lots of customization options. Way to go. Funny thing about Streets of Rage 4 was that the beat ‘em up game Fighting Force by Core Design was originally pitched to Sega as that potential fourth game. Sega said no because of Core wanting the game to be multi-platform rather than a Saturn exclusive, so it was rebranded and published by Eidos. I’m very glad it didn’t get picked up by Sega, as Fighting Force was rather mediocre and the less about its sequel, the better.
I don't really blame SEGA for this one, I mean who is going to pitch Nintendo a multi-platform version of Mario Kart or Kirby, that's just taking the piss. Shame on you Core. Where are you now.

Was addicted to this about a year ago. I actually like how you can unlock AI partners, who are better then a lot of real life coop partners I bring with me. Izumi, the famous SoR2 speed runner, called it "Mugen fan game". Also claimed he liked it on a fun level, but for whatever reason didn't think of it as a real SoR game stylistically. Eh, it's fun by my clock, and that's all that matters.
@@Shyning77 Well, he's a speed runner. As impressive as their skills are I find they can be a little off colored sometimes (Look up the RUclips video about how God of War 2 was cracked wide open by a speed runner, he was clearly a little bit insane.. :) )
SOR4 is a solid beat'em up but I didn't like the juggle system all that much but this one reminds me of the trilogy with a huge overhaul in moves, stages and that classic 2d sprite work. Definitely gonna give this a go.
Streets of Rage 4's art style was perfect for the evolution of the series. The hand drawn animation was some of the most fluid in video games. All in all, SoR 4 did a great job of evolving the series without straying away from what made it great in the first place
Yeah agree 1000%. I like yhe look of the originals as well, especially for the time they were made but cannot for the life of me fathom how anyone can look at 4 as a downgrade to the point it's apparently the most common complaint I've seen from older fans. Like them sprites are nice but how can anyone see what 4's team did and go "ew" lol
SoR4's art looks nothing like the originals, it's not an evolution of it, it's an entirely separate, distinctly French comic book style. You can like it but it's not in line with the previous games. Personally I didn't care for it, and it had nothing to do with it not being pixelated or retro.
@@RedLyne8405I agree; I feel if Streets of Rage came out of the Dreamcast, the art style would have been similar to what we have in SOR4 now. We had modern 2D games like Guilty Gear that used the hand-drawn style graphics, which I feel Sega would have used if they made another 2D version of Streets of Rage. Sega, like most gaming companies at the time, wanted to create 3D games. There was a 3D version of Streets of Rage being tested around this time that went nowhere. I love pixel art, but it loses something when its not on a CRT. Pixel art is too perfect and harsh on modern TV's; I never liked the look of it on my 4K TV. I do love streets of rage remake, but I don't understand the hate of SOR4 art style; they are both great games, and I agree SOR4 is a perfect evolution. As for games not looking like the originals, they shouldn't. Look at the Street Fighter series. They maintained the fighting style but bumped up the graphics to modern times.
So epic! Downloading it now. I really wish it could run on Genesis or Saturn or Dreamcast or something. Put those flashcarts to use on OG hardware. Thanks for sharing this!
I also thought the default visual style of Streets of Rage 4 was off. I know it has fans, but I didn't like the art style from when they revealed it. It struck me as odd that they either didn't announce the retro filters or barely made that known. I really liked what I saw of those filters. Seems like it would have been better to advertise that for people like me. As for the art, I had a couple of issues. The main one was the thick black outlines on the characters. It made everything look so flat. The developer showed concept art that didn't have the thick outlines and it looked much better to me. I thought there were some other odd design choices, but those were smaller things. As for this Remake v5.2, it really looks incredible what they've put into this. I'll have to look into it. Thanks for showing.
I wish it was out on ps4 in digital/physical/collectors edition. Although Sega had its disputes in the past, in this day and age they should just buy the IP from Bombergames and that way Bomberges get the credits/recognition/pay from the mainstream for all those years of hard work. This game needs to be taken to the next level.
Does this version also play on the original modded Xbox? I just remember having crashes from the previous updates once you defeated a boss. Real shame as it was awesome.
Streets of rage is hands down the best beat-em-up of all time! THE REAL reason to own a GENESIS, aside from THE ROAD RASH SERIES! I'll never forget the time I had a friend over and we killed a bottle of Scotch while playing this. He one time verbally expressed "This is fuckin awesome". Growing up playing these games it was a delight for me to hear that while kicking ass alongside my homie.
Thanks for this informative video. I assumed the 5.0 release from over a decade ago was the last bit of work ever done on this since the website went down a few years later. Amazed to hear there is even more new tracks and will have to check these out now. :)
Awesome! This should have been on Mega CD / 32X / Saturn back in the day. IF ONLY this game could get a 4 player mode - that would be fantastic. Thanks for providing the link as well - just got hold of it!
To all the people complaining about how certain stages should have certain music tracks, or I don't like this one, you are aware you can change every single music track in the game right? and that you can select new music or retro ? I personally just got a bunch of my favorite music from all the late 80's to the 90's and just replaced them all. Of course I didn't just put ANY music in there, I selected more upbeat, electro stuff, lots of breakbeat like Prodigy, Crystal method, even some old skkool rap like house of pain and cypress hill, nine inch nails was great for the bosses and stuff, LOL its such a different experience.. playing the game and listening to the soundtrack of my life at the same time...theres over 70 tracks to change, I even changed the opening to something WAY more intense and the select screen... oh and renaming ALL THE BAD GUYS is the greatest , instead of "y.signal", we got "smacked ass" and we got "god's mistake" instead of "jet" luv it...
With the amount of people in the comments acting like this is where you get tech support instead of just using a little Google Fu should tell you all you need about where we're headed with people and tinkering.
Streets of Rage 2 so many great memories! Definitely checking this out looks great. I love to see retro projects like this. Would be awesome to see this on modern hardware.
This game is AMAZING! Me and my buds had great times with one of the older versions of Streets of Rage Remake, right around the time Sega had tried to shut the game down. Before SOR 4 was released, we felt that THIS was the true successor to the SOR franchise and we didn't understand why it wasn't getting the "Sonic Mania" treatment. Sega is throwing away a gold mine here. They REALLY should really consider publishing this game officially.
As usual, great content. When I saw this, I used the link, then I noticed I'd already got it! But this reminded me to play it. SoRRv52 is probably the best version of Streets of Rage. I like SoR4 but SoRRv52 is the best version of the whole Streets of Rage (unofficial) franchise. I've always had the unpopular opinion that Bare Knuckle 3 was the best SoR, regardless of music, but SoRR52 is the best SoR simply because it is BK3 (not SoR3) but with all the bells and whistles. And you can run... And use your partner for team up attacks. Something sadly lacking in SoR4. I do hope that SoR4 improves. Everyone should be able to run.
I don't know if it's fair to put SORR, a fan game with no limits, up against a retail game. Like......SMB1 Crossover has a ton more content than SMB1 Nes. A load more. But......it's not really a fair game to put up against it.
I agree, Sega 'should have' had this as an official release. I've no problem with SoR 4 or with LizardCube's art style (which worked right for Dragon's Trap), but gameplay wise it just didn't felt like the original games. In fact it had to be played like a modern game instead of a traditional beat-em-up. I'll give this one a go and see how it it...
Same. I would love for someone to put this on an actual Mega Drive / Genesis cartridge or on an actual Dreamcast disc. Would be incredible to play this on real Sega hardware.
Not sure if you know this, but if you go into the store late a night, after 12am I think, you can catch Blaze sleeping. If you see her sleeping, you can steal items from the store, but she can also catch you stealing and punish you for it as well.
Sega needs to contract whoever made SoRR and release it as a definitive edition. I'd love for the individual to be paid for their incredible work on this project. This way all parties can benefit and we can have it on multiple platforms
@@dangunheadachron1603 sometimes Sega does dumb sh*t , they probably did it at a time where they weren't sure what to do with the IP and I must say this is one of the most well known fan projects on the internet bc people want to play more SoR.
@@dangunheadachron1603 I don't think they did. Bomber Games contacted them during development and Sega more or less said it would be fine to do it for free, and only after release asked them to stop. That makes me believe their intention was to stop the project after it couldn't be stopped anymore just to please certain higher ups or their legal team.
The art style and graphics on streets of rage 4 are amazing imo. This is coming from someone that was there for all of them day one. Oh well as John Dalton would say "opinions vary".
Remake is amazing, as it's one of the greatest beat em titles ever. I haven't played it in awhile, so I will be happily checking out the update very soon.
Not to take away from the phenomenal work that the devs have put in so far, but it would have been awesome if they rendered the character models using the large 2D sprites of the 32-bit era. This would have made this game feel like the Saturn sequel that never was.
Sega issuing a C&D against this project is IMO the biggest and most shameful mistake they made in the 2010s. This was Sonic Mania before Sonic Mania existed, and had every right to be an official game with Sega's blessing. The fact that the opposite happened and the main dev behind Remake (Bomberlink) vanished from the internet because of it was a huge injustice.
Looks amazing, SLX. Gonna play it later. It's crazy how fans put more care into Sega's IPs than Sega does. Hope someone makes a fan port or remake of Daytona USA 1 and 2 or Sega Rally one day. Even with Sonic, Sonic fans have the decompilations of Sonic 1/2/CD, Sonic 3 A.I.R., the DC Conversion mods for the PC ports of the Sonic Adventure games, and there's even some mad lad taking on the herculean effort of remaking the disaster that is Sonic 06 with Sonic Project 06. The amount of effort and passion that goes into these projects is nothing short of astonishing.

This easily eclipses Streets Of Rage 4: Mr.X as the best Streets Of Rage even though it is not an official SEGA programmed game. It remained true to its original roots.
This fan project has one thing I WISH was implemented more often in many games. Competent Co-op AI partner. There are heaps of games that could do with a good AI Co-Op for times you just don’t want to go online for multiplayer and no one else is around to play co-op. *It would have been great as an option to have at least 2 or more AI co-op partners in this game, even though it may mess around with the difficulty balance it would still be good to have that option just for some added chaos.

A game like this could still be released across new consoles and as far back as the Mega CD if they cared to do so.
Such a shame that Sega don't seem to understand console gaming beyond Sonic.
They actually did hire the team to make that recent 1 level Yakuza / SOR cross over
damn this is what Sonic Mania did for Sonic , would’ve been amazing if Sega released this remake
Love this game, been playing it since version 4. It would be incredible if it was ported to the switch!
I love how you think
This game looks absolutely phenomenal. It's nuts. Sega should honestly publish this already...
One of my favourite beat em up series
This is an exceptional good fan game, that manages to surpass the originals. It really is that good. I wish a miracle would happen and Sega would officially release the game and make ports for actual consoles.
Great review as always dude! This game deserves much more love!
Maybe someone will port it for the XBox Series S/X?
This is slowly becoming one of my favorite channels to watch.
SOR remake is the best game I’ve ever played. They smashed it out of the park!
I've been playing through the original series again just this week. This is cool.
I thought SOR4 was good, but I really missed the original artwork… this version looks and sounds amazing and should have been the official SOR4! 👍🏻
Yeah, I think Fighting Force would have been a really bad route for the franchise.
I don't really blame SEGA for this one, I mean who is going to pitch Nintendo a multi-platform version of Mario Kart or Kirby, that's just taking the piss.
Shame on you Core.
Where are you now.
@@SegaLordX Would have been the Golden Axe Rider for SoR.
I like 4 ok, but this is definitely where it’s at! All love for this project.
4 is one of the best imo, but I've never played this remake.
@@wg8561 It beats the pants off 4. 4 just is missing something that this has.
@@wg8561 you're missing alot. The replay value is huge on this game. I stopped playing marvel vs Capcom 2 and dead or alive 5 last round for this game. Survival mode is addicting. Wish they had online play for street of rage remake
"Mugen fan game" couldn't be further from the truth, as the engine has been made from scratch specifically for this game.
Oh, awesome! Always love Streets Of Rage 1 and 2 (and generally loved 3 except for the music). Having them all-in-one plus extras, that's sweet.
Yea art style for Sor4 was a solid choice imo
I love SoR Remake but wasn't aware of the new version , this is awesome man! I'm for sure going to check it out, love your videos! #SegaFOREVER
Love Streets of Rage Remake.
SOR1 has a special place in my heart. Remake is incredible.
Actually, the IP is the property of SEGA already ;) Hence the C&D coming from them when the first complete version came out.
This might be the greatest beat em up of all time. The amount of content is mind blowing. This is pure joy....
I’ve got this on my modded OG Xbox and it’s absolutely brilliant on it.
Huge fan of this game.
Does this version also play on the original modded Xbox? I just remember having crashes from the previous updates once you defeated a boss. Real shame as it was awesome.
Had no idea this existed. Looks incredible
Will be giving this a go after work tonight
you won't be disappointed. Excellent game all around.
Oh, the game is great, my friend. Support you!
Finally you cover this one, IMO better than SOR4.....
This is my go to game when I need my SoR fix. It’s perfect!
another great video.
sof remake is a masterpiece in fan gaming and gaming in general. 5.4 is a great surprise
I really like these videos. sega rules
Glad you like them!
Same. I would love for someone to put this on an actual Mega Drive / Genesis cartridge or on an actual Dreamcast disc. Would be incredible to play this on real Sega hardware.
This looks incredible. I will def try this. But i will say the combo system of sor4 is revolutionary
Are you kidding me? They tried to get rid of the game!
Streets of Rage Remake is everything that Streets of Rage 4 should have been
Now this is how a remake should be made! Great video Sega Lord X. Im playing it soon
Would love an update of this with Street of Rage 4's juggling system or being able to bounce enemies off walls.
8:05 the music there typically defines early 1990s dance music from uk rave elements and bit of house
Not to take away from the phenomenal work that the devs have put in so far, but it would have been awesome if they rendered the character models using the large 2D sprites of the 32-bit era. This would have made this game feel like the Saturn sequel that never was.
One of if not the best fan remake!
SoRR is one of my favorite video games of all time.
Installed that 5.2 build on my OG xbox and it works perfectly!
Great video thanks for sharing. I had no idea this came out. I got it last night and played it for several hours. Thanks again.
Very smart and efficient video!
Amazing, my favorite game ever with SFII.
My son name is Axel, nothing more to say 🙂
Thanks very much
Looks amazing, SLX.
SoRR is one of my favourite fangames ever, and if I'm being completely honest; I prefer it to the original MD versions of SoR 1/2/3, it's *that* good! Such an amazing accomplishment and a cracking game to play :) I just wish Sega hadn't shut the project down before the developers could release the source code, seeing this ported to new platforms would be AMAZING! Having a UWP/Xbox One port would be
Oh my goodness…this is awesome. Thank you SLX for posting this video.
Man, thank you so very much for showing us this gem!
Thanks Sega Lord X! I really hope there is a SOR3 Playthrough as well.
SoRR v5.2 was ported to the Sony Vita back in October. It runs great 👍!
I feel stupid that I didn't even know about 5.2 and I love SorR.
This easily eclipses Streets Of Rage 4: Mr.X as the best Streets Of Rage even though it is not an official SEGA programmed game. It remained true to its original roots.
Thanks friend for sharing the game and special thanks to bombergames team I love you❤
Streets of Rage Remake V5.2 is really great and Awesome and thanks Sega Lord X for the link description and this game is better than Streets of Rage 4
