      5D Mark II is good cheap alternative for BMPCC OG it's has very close filmic quality that BMPCC produce straight out camera and full frame is better in lens choice so you get full potential of lenses. I have GH5 it's great camera but in color grading more bit debt is more important than anything else . I was owned real cinema cameras and now trying grading 10 bit footage it's very boring prosses.

    One of the most iconic cameras ever made.I remember everyone being blown away that a full frame camera was capable of shooting 1080p video, there was nothing else even close to it in 2008. This camera started the hybrid craze still going strong today. I just sold my a7IV and went back to Canon DSLRs, including the 5D II I got for like $325 off Ebay. Sony's cameras do have great tech, but the photos always look sterile, over-sharpened and digital, zero character to them. I was using Mist filters to try and soften them up and make them look more filmic, more like Canon photos. Got tired of fighting it and just went back to Canon. I also prefer Canon colors as well. The older Canon DSLRs and EF glass are the best deals out there right now. Oh and you dont have to use the viewfinder on these, it has Live View mode with face detection which basically turns it into a mirrorless camera.

    I LOVE my old 5D MK2!! The focus system is old, but I just shoot portraits anyway. :) I used to work as a profesional photographer, until the arthritis got me bad. I have shot Canon, Nikon, panasonic, both DSLR's and mirrorless. Nikon D750, D810, Eos 6D, 5D MK2/MK3/MK4...we even had a Hasselblad in the studio I worked in. But after I had to stop working, money ran a little short. So I bougth an old EOS M for traveling, an EOS 70D for more action things and a 5D MK2. All for just under 400 USD. I LOVE the felling of an old heavy DSLR. And I alredy had the glass, the ligths, smoke machines and son. The 5D MK2 puts out just as great files now as 15 years ago!! It's just knowing your gear and what it can do and what you have to do for it. ;)

    I've had a Canon 5DII since they first came out. It was way ahead of anything else at the time, and it's still superb. My similar self-imposed assignment was using the 17-40mm zoom only, and that was an absolute treat in a variety of situations, especially when using a polarising filter. Another time I confined myself to 70-200mm zoom IS and using black-and-white only. Again, a great discipline.

    Having shot with a Sony A7 for a while, I recently acquired a 5D Classic, a 5D2 and a load of lenses, including EF 24/2.8, 50/1.8 and 85/1.8, and a Sigma 12-24, all for around £1,200. That's an insane price for the quality of this kit. The only thing I really miss about my Sony A7 (which I still have) is its size/portability and its focus-peaking (which is the best in the business). But apart from that, I absolutely love shooting with the Canon bodies and lenses. This system has reignited my love for photography, and I have been out shooting almost every day since I got the kit.

    I've had the 5D II since 2010, to this day, and it's clearly on it's last leg but gosh I still love it. It needed a new shutter a year ago and in the meantime I bought an a6500 and tried my best to love crop sensors, but the second I got my 5D back with a 50mm 1.4 lens, and brought it in to photoshop it's just amazing how that FF look albeit 10 years old still has amazing quality. Personally, I much prefer how the 5D II does focus magnification for manual focus far more than Sony. In a perfect world, I'd buy a brand new A7R IV, but, as budget dictates, I'm probably gonna go 6D mark II or A7II. However, I really miss the joystick, such a great feature. No doubt that Sony AF is the best in the game though.

    the 50 1.4 is far from quite bad in fact its image quality in only slightly under the flagship 50 1.2L , I had a sony a7rII with G glass for years as well, yet still there is something about the older canon body's that just makes the images pop and appear more dreamy. Back button focus , center focus point, recompose, through an optical viewfinder just feels good. I also find that images from this type of setup needed less post processing

    Great video. I’ve gone from a Sony a7 first edition to a canon 5d mk2 and I find that the photos coming out of the canon are much more pleasing to the eye, colours pop a bit more but keep natural tones on skin and red have a deeper contrast to them. With Sony I was finding that all the shots at least in jpeg had an orange/blue style hue that I get comes from Sonys colour science but you get a bit bored of it and having to change it all in post to give you a more realistic image is more effort than necessary.

    I am actually thinking of doing this now in 2024.
    My current camera is a Sony A7 Mark 1, and I only have one Sony E-mount lens for it, and I can't afford Sony glass, or the gods forbid, upgrading the body. So have been either converting my old Canon EF mount lenses with an adapter for use on the Sony ,and even purchasing more Canon glass to get my hands on lenses I lack in my kit. This up to the point where I may as well just get a canon body. And the Canon EOS 5D II and even the III is getting very affordable, with me being a landscape photograper a 5D should deliver.
    My only concern is dynamic range. But heck, I coild just keep my Sony body for those occations, or exposure bracket.

    The 5DII's photos are very pleasing right out of the camera. And the 5DII is still a pro camera on its own terms. It has been used in films such as Captain America, Avengers, Thor, Elysium and lots of other great movies. And many contest winners back in the day were shot by a 5DII - and a great photo is still a great photo. But specswise it's an ancient creature.

    You make out that a picture from the two of these cameras would be so drastically different to each other, but I really don’t believe it would. In good lighting and both with good lenses, the pictures will be incredibly similar and I highly doubt you’re going to notice such a vast difference as you make out you will. Newer cameras advanced mainly in technology, but picture quality is still fantastic on the 5D mkii, and can barely be differentiated from a 5D mkiv unless in low lighting.

    Hit the nail on the head with the proverbial "your pictures are really good, you must have a really good camera" myth. A great artist can create great art even from trash. Good tools just make it easier, more efficient, and allows the artist to push the envelope with what's possible. But where art and clients are concerned, it's never a substitute for expressing yourself, creating emotion and images we enjoy.
    The other factor is enjoyment. We don't pursue a hobby or endeavour because it's really easy. We do it because it can be challenging and produces rewarding and satisfying results. That can also include using the latest and best gear with all the bells and whistles but it's not one and the same, merely another path.

    Talking about the 5dmk2 as though it's a nonprofessional camera such that skill and vision are more important is sheer lunacy. The 5d is still a full sensor professional kit...it only needs more skill because newer cameras have automated more functions, but the quality of the images produced hold their own against the newest gear in daylight. • @AS-zw4lk
    @AS-zw4lk 5 лет назад +1

    There's nothing wrong at all with the image quality of the 50mm 1.4 if you know what you're doing. It's light, sharp, pleasing contrast, bright and quick enough to focus - the only complaint I have ever had with it is that the focus ring feels sloppy (compared to L lenses) like it could get stuck at any time and also the focus travel of the ring is pretty large which might be a pain for those which manual focus (which I like to do). This was the first lens I used with my 5D Mk I when it came out - I still use it today with later versions of the 5d. It's a great buy if you find one which has been taken care of. If your composition is good, I DO NOT think the client would notice the difference. If you're still trying to make your images better with technology, spend some time on learning to compose compelling images and building rapport with the subject(s). Composition beats technology any day - just study some history. Technically 'superior', boring images are everywhere.

    It gives the impression that you have made a video to convince yourself that you have the best and spend all your time justifying why you have a Sony. The revolution that the Canon EOS 5D Mark II brought about in its day was a historic milestone. Today using the Magic Lantern firmware that unlocks a lot of hidden features older Canon cameras including the 5D compete at the highest level with any other modern camera. Both in dynamic range, cinematographic look and a long etc. Movies in Hollywood and TV series like House have been shot with the 5D Mark II. The next comparison, do it with a 5D Mark II with Magic Lantern.

    I have a 5D Classic, but I do my more official shooting with an Olympus e-m1 mk 1(I have 2 bodies and the customary bag o' lenses). The 5D was the last camera I had before switching to Olympus. Then, when I started seeing all these photogs getting all nostalgic about the 5D, I re-acquired one with a couple of primes. I've settled on the venerable, released-the-same-year 24-105 f/4 IS L as the one lens that I could do anything with. This video makes the plainest case (that I've seen) for budding photogs to get this camera with a cheap lens: you'll take great pictures if you understand how to live with a basic tool that, incidentally, is as cheap as dirt. I happened to notice similar problems as you experienced in your video, especially having no preview screen to flip out when I want to take a low shot. "Damn. I'm going to have lie on the ground ... or come up with a different shot." Good work, Mr Turner.

    Good points. I have both, A Sony A7iii and 5D2. I have the 5D2 for 10 years. Bottom line 5D2? Too many shots are ruined from out of focus or camera shake with unsharp images. Colors are off in non ideal lighting. Night work is well, forget it unless you use a tripod. Low effective ISO. - max is 1250 and grainy at that. I cringe at 1250, but 640 is safe. In an age of high ISO native cameras, this makes it challenging like using regular film.
    Video can be substandard if not really planned well. Strictly manual focus, manual camera. Forget night video - basically a daytime, high light camera and really, it is a tripod camera for best shots - which is OK in many ways. But don't try blogging. It is hand held unless it is supported somehow or you want that movement. Then this will force you to slow down and work your shots which is OK. Forget indoor candid shots unless you have f2 or better, 125 sec or faster and 1250 max unless you want to have lots of grain. 6400 is a write off for both video and photography. Superb optics or steady shot lenses are in order.
    The fixed poor screen on the back is a pain for low level work. I used a magnifier which helped a lot, but it is bulky. There is no headphone jack for video. For good audio, you need to use a Beachtek adapter.
    After using my Sony A7iii with Contax / Zeiss N Series lenses, the results were absolutely spectacular and no going back even though I tried. Night and day better, a game changer. far more freedom, incredible quality shots, night photography is a pleasure. video is pro quality. Rear tilt screen is awesome, lots of custom function buttons, peaking focus assist. EVF is a game changer.
    I still have my Canon but it is rarely used anymore. I do have lots of glorious shots on it, but was always limited as mentioned. Great training camera.

    I have a 5D MKii and a Nikon D800, D7200. The autofocus of the 5D MKii is not as advanced as the D800 or even close to the D7200, but it is more than adequate. I am an old timer and I still use all formats of film cameras, more than digital in fact. I am used to a little manual focusing, one might say. I really think that the likes of Sony, Nikon, Canon, Fuji are doing photography a disservice by incorporating more and more automated features in their cameras, they are just selling /marketing points, largely The role of a photographer is being reduced to a button pusher in the process. The excuse of all this automation is giving me more time to concentrate on composition is a lame one IMHO. Photographers have managed to find outstanding compositions using fully manual cameras for over 100 years. I have to give you credit for getting out of your comfort zone and trying something unfamiliar.

    Yup! Gear doesn’t matter. You just have to know your camera’s limitations. But most cameras in this generation can produce amazing photos that’s handled by a knowledgeable photographer.

    • @Robstrap
      @Robstrap 2 года назад

      gear does matter to a certain point. You can't take good images if the camera is stopping you. Like if it is super bad. People gotta stop acting like gear means zero lol if you have a lens that has bad optics and won't take sharp images your skill won't change anything

    Went from Canon to Sony (A7S , A7R2) years ago but now going back to Canon . Also shoot Leica . Sony are far more advanced (focus and low light) but I enjoy using the Canon bodies more .The Sony bodies are just too small and too feature packed for me . I never use the back screen . Lovely shots by the way and a very thoughtful review .

    I hear what your saying but why a 50mm F1.4 ? - although very good it was introduced to the market in 1993 - if you wanted a proper indication of the 5d's performance then wouldn't it be an idea to put a recent piece of L glass on it ?

    I am undecided whether to take a Nikon d800 with a Tamron 28-75 f2.8 that I found at a great price or a Canon 5d mark ii and I would take a 50mm f1.4 or other lens. I specify that I also make videos. What do you suggest me?

    I have every 5D camera body from the Classic to the 4... ill never change... probably coz I have so much invested in glass hahaha... but seriously there is not much out there that matches the Canon 5d sensors.. namely the 5d Classic or Mark i...and the mark ii for colour. Theres just something there. Some sort of magic.
    Match these with some FD mount SSC prime lenses from the 70's and you can thank me later.
    Great video bro.

    The 5d2 is a great camera and has less noise at iso 100-200 than the 5dIII. I had a Sony alpha and I think the Canon-L glass and some consumer lenses are superior to Sony lenses (In fact Sony glass is made by Tamron). The only chance a Sony photographer has is to find some good Minolta Maxxum old glass (I had some). But these are very rare and difficult to find. Obs: The 50 f1.4 is a great lens. You either got a bad copy or you forget how to use an "old" lens
