  • This was a great tune and I was expecting something more heavy and loud and was glad it wasn't.

Silverchair is my favorite band ever!
Freak show and neon ballroom is their prime.

So I absolutely adore Silverchair and live very close to their hometown. They won a radio music contest in 1994 and released their first single called tomorrow when they were only about 15 years old. It was number 1 in Australia for weeks and their impact on Aussie youth was huge. It also made a splash in America which is rare for a Aussie act (I think number 1 on the rock/alt radio chart and number 28 on billboard according to Wikipedia). They absolutely were compared to nirvana and there are definately some similarities in their early work and the fact they looked similar, however they always said they don't like the comparisons as they were not big nirvana fans and were more inspired by bands like Sabbath, zeppelin and pearl jam and Soundgarden. They definitely developed their own sound which evolved over time. I much prefer them to nirvana, and I really like nirvana. For more Silverchair reactions I suggest the songs Tomorrow, Freak (their other big hit at the time and my personal favourite), Cementry, Anthem for the year 2000 (talking about the year 2000 sounds outdated but the song is as relevant as ever as it's about the government and media being puppets doing what there told to control us) and Ana's song (song the lead singer wrote about his battle with Anorexia). I also suggest the songs straight lines and greatest view. (not my favourites but they really show how much their sound ended up changing.)

They were also heavily influenced by Helmet

Recorded this song when they were 15. They were 19 for this concert. First 2 albums are great, still listen to them 25years later.

It was in 1997. Daniel was 18 and the other 2 were either 17 going on 18 or still 17 because I can’t recall which month this was in.

Yes Dan waa 18. He’s a year older than me and also born in April. I turned 17 that year and he turned 18. I was at their Sydney gig during this tour before this Melbourne show.

You pronounced it right the 1st time mate. These boys were from my hometown (Newcastle NSW) can't say I was ever a fan though. Chili Peppers took them under their wing in the US.

About Daniels voice, with that album Freak show, during the concerts he tended to put a lil more aggro grainyness in his voice. It's like he was spitting the lyrics at you in hatred. 1st album was really raw and natural, no 2 Freak show the hatred came out, no3 Neon Ballroom he went really soft and falsetto, no4 a bit more rocky flatter voice, same with no 5. But mixed in all albums there is some really heavy songs there. Israel's son, learn to hate, spawn again, one way mule, freak.

I disagree, big PJ fan here. But he (Johns) does have that gritty “grunge sound” in his voice. Love this song!

I think Daniel Johns was a massive Kurt Cobain fan.
