I just ran into a guy selling fresh produce in the parking lot outside of RiteAid and after telling him I wanted to grow Mirliton (that's what we call them in New Orleans) he gave me his last three for free! I love Mirliton and I wouldn't have even thought to grow them had it not been for your channel. Thanks for teaching me how. I can't wait to get them in the ground!
New Orleans?! I hope you did good with those 3 mirlitons and are still growing. Dr. Lance Hill of Tulane in N.O. started the Mirliton Project after Hurricane Katrina nearly wiped out the mirlitons there. I lived on Frenchman st. and my back fence neighbor grew them on our fence ..They were delicious and bountiful. I built a box trellis for them and had a shady spot under them to chill..20 degrees cooler under them..

I found your video AFTER my chayote monster had already sprouted and grown at least 12 tentacles (vines.) I am one of those gardeners who plants new things and says, "Let's just see what happens," and do NOT prune. OMG...It's everywhere and I finally trimmed off shoots when it began to approach the porch... I was imagining waking up one day and not being able to open the front door because of chayote vine growth! We've been enjoying chayote fruit for two months now and I'm sooooo happy. Your pruning guide and diagrams are so helpful. I'll be pruning it back sometime in the next month after we get DOZENS more fruits off the vine! I might even gift one or five to the squirrels. 😉

One of my favourite vegetables to add with beef or pork. These guys grow so fast and produce so much that most of the times we had to give away most of them to our neighbours. 😋😋😋

I loved your video. I've grown mirlitons off and on for 48 years and this is the first time I ever saw anyone prune a mirliton vine. I reckon that is the thing to do if you are limited to space and growing many other things, as the vines can get outrageous for sure. I've always heard about eating the shoots but have never tried them, but I will start this season. I am part of a couple of mirliton projects here in south Louisiana. Dr. Lance Hill of Tulane Univ. in New Orleans started the Mirliton Project mirliton.org after Hurricane Katrina and now is part of a small group working on furthering the Ishreal Thibodeaux White Mirliton. I grew up in southern Taiwan. My mom often used shredded chayote for dumpling filling. The flavor is amazing with minced ginger and toasted sesame oil. Thanks for the share. I'll grow some next year.

??!! I like Chayote and have often wanted to grow them. Now I'm not sure! It sounds like if you prune it steadily you'll have a lot of vegetables, so that's good. I think I'll make the trellis FIRST. This is definitely the best pruning information I have seen, very clear. Obviously you can't wait to do it....

You did an excelent job of documenting the husbandry of this plant. I had a very difficult time trying to root and propogate this plant. The process is not at all intuititave. The pruning process you described is extremely helpful. This plant is a full-time-job, and rightfully so.

Thank you for the details about how to grow Chayote. When I ask people locally I receive too answers but your advice is excellent. I knew the young shoots were edible but didn't know about the need to constantly prune to have large, healthy vines and fruits. Also, I didn't know about removing the new shoots that sprout at the base. All of this is excellent advice. I have 12 Chayote to plant. Um, maybe I should give a few of them away!
This was a great video for sure. I hope to see more. I believe she prunes because she is trying to keep it contained, but it really isn't necessary. But, they can spread out 40' or more in all directions if you let them. She obviously loves to eat the shoots too, which I've never tried but will this season. I've always planted mine in pots until they got larger and have given away many. Check out mirliton.org for some serious mirliton info and resources.

I like how you showed a calendar of your chayote's progress. I will start one in a pot by November so I can transplant right after winter here in Northern California which is around February. Thanks for sharing.

@@Metqa I only planted one in the ground & it rot & died haha! We have bad clay soil here. But I have a grapevine for 4 years now & other trees. I'll try next time.
My four plants have been planted into a pot. In three days, they have grown about three inches, on top of my refrigerator! I didn't put much water into the pot. The soil is still damp! My peas and red roselle hibiscus seeds are also growing! They're in between two black trash bags and covered with a baby blanket. I am using a chair heater wrapped in a black trash bag. It has three temps, low in am., off in afternoon, medium during evening, than high at night time. Half the hibiscus seeds have sprouted and the dirt is pushing up around the peas! I have myvseeds stored in their planting order. Mini greenhouses are on sale and I can by trays from my local nursery. Thanks for teaching me so much over the winter!

This was a good video and the first time I ever saw someone prune a mirliton vine. Getting a mirliton into production isn't always easy and can take a second season to get established enough to produce. Normally they will start to flower in late summer and the fruit will be ready around November, at least down here in deep south Louisiana. Sometimes you can get a smaller spring crop with an established vine. I never pruned mine and had one for many years that would cover my entire back yard, going up 30' into my oak tree. Check out Dr. Lance Hill's site mirliton.org for loads of info and resources. Don't give up.
Great video, I live in Hawaii and have several vines frown on my fence, the 1st season I harvested well over a 100 fruit but now the vines are withering and I may have to replant. Thank you for your video
We call them Mirliton in Louisiana. I have tried to grow these in years past and I could get them about 1 foot tall and then they would die.

probably your soil is bad. I once had that problem so later I used different soil and it's grew longer and greener. Just buy a miracle grow garden soil bag.

Thanks for very detailed and helpful tutorial. I am keen to try this vine in my garden at the Dont Surrender Retreat, outback Australia. My big worry is the heat we get out here, sometimes over 45c for a week. I will try under/next to my grape arbour. Regards.

Lots of information and really like your video. I just cleaned up chayote plant in the fall and found tubers in the root system. Can it be overwinter like Dahlia tubers and replant the next spring?

I live in Toronto Canada and have tried for 3 years, but haven't got much luck...! @ first year just got green leaves. Last year, 2016 , got lot, lot of leaves, flowers and tiny fruits. 3 big as a small pear. one was eaten, one was ... stollen when it just started developing !! :( . One was found rotten dried up and buried in the vines when cleaning up garden in the fall !!.
Yes as you said on video, the more you trim the more shoots coming out... ! Ended up , I ate lot of... shoots last year... I told my friend, (the one who gave me the fruits for growing) He said because I trimmed the branches/shoots that's why I don't have fruit .... !!! ??? His, produce a lots of fruits ...?!?!. and his back yard garden is just about less than a mile away from my allotment garden !!!. I don't now what to ... blame !!! Could it be to much compost? nitrogen in the soil?! or what make plants produce more green than fruit or root? .. What should i do to get some more fruits than leaves
Right now April -2017, -- I have got 5 chayote plants r in the greenhouse, 3 are very bushy nice and healthy about 5' -6 ' tall. I just pinched the tip off when they were about a foot or 2' tall. after that they shot out a lot of branches.-- What should I prune them now?
The other 2 r about a foot and little taller and r healthy also. with these guys, should I prune any or wait until they are in the garden for awhile??
With the cold weather here! , we have to wait close to the end of May when it will be warmer , to bring to the garden.

You can leave the baby chayote and harvest them young and no need to prune just cut the young tender shoots to be used as cooked green leafy vegetable.

I live in zone 6B I started my chayote in May when it was 5 foot vine and I’m getting many chayotes now but soon the frost will come ,, any ideas how to overwinter it?? One person said put 4 foot of mulch all around it

How to store fruit for long term? Each year my fruits start sprouting within 1-2 weeks from harvesting. I give many away freshly picked but would like some to last a few months to reach my family’s dinner bowls! For long term storage, is it best to:
- keep in dark or is light okay
- keep in humid or dry environment
- store at what temperature
- wrap in paper/plastic or keep unwrapped
- have good airflow or seal to prevent drying out
For growing at end of winter, I am in Zone 8b Vancouver-Coquitlam, BC Canada. We generally do not need to pot sprouted fruit indoors until Feb and transplant outdoors in April-May. When they sprout and send out shoots in October, should I cut these early shoots off? What conditions prevent the fruit from early-sprouting? Any helpful advice you can give is greatly appreciated~ Thank you!
