    50 yrs ago a friend's wife in S Miami grew these like crazy in a chain link fence. I now am finally getting around to doing it myself in N Central Florida. Wish me luck - I don't have a green thumb ,-\

    As a 4th generation farmer here's a basic characteristic of the chayote fruit.one obvious is that the more mature the fruit is the lighter the color is.its never dark green or green.you cannot store it in an immature state in a water filled container because it will rot.we keep the mature fruit in a dark airy area.the mature fruit has moved it seeds to the edge and opens it's mouth.we wait till it forms a seminal plant which dries and eventually shrinks it's other end.we then plant it as a whole plant.this fruit is sensitive to water because it easily rots not like tubers like sweet potatoes

      ​@elenalucasjara374 copia y pega las palabras que deseas traducir y escribe google translate en una nueva pagina y paste o( pega, aplica] las palabras deseadas de traducir a idioma espanol y click haz el search ( buscar) y te dara los resultados deseados. Es muy facil solo sigue intentando hasta que logres la traducción!

      @@elenalucasjara374 Puedes copiar el texto y pegarlo para traducir Google. Asi que aqui esta : Como agricultor de cuarta generación, aquí hay una característica básica de la fruta del chayote. Una obvia es que cuanto más madura es la fruta, más claro es el color. Nunca es verde oscuro o verde. No se puede almacenar en un estado inmaduro en un recipiente lleno de agua. porque se pudrirá. Mantenemos la fruta madura en un área oscura y aireada. La fruta madura ha movido sus semillas hasta el borde y abre la boca. Esperamos hasta que forme una planta seminal que se seca y eventualmente encoge el otro extremo. Luego plántela como una planta entera. Esta fruta es sensible al agua porque se pudre fácilmente, no como los tubérculos como las batatas.

    I started mine this way in March (it was still getting down to 32 - 38 degrees (F) some nights) inside. It is May 3 and they have all sprouted well. Temps are much much warmer now, so next step is to put them in soil...so far, so good. We should be able to have a decent harvest in the Fall.

    Chayotes a gift to the world from mesoamerica….( from Mexico to Costa Rica )in Costa Rica there is chayotes of 4 lbs each

    Why would the sellers wrap the chayote in those styrofoam net things. Chayotes are really tough. I wish we could reduce all unnecessary single use plastics. 😢

    the Choko.. lol throw enough in the ground and some will grow like weeds :D For a Choko plant that lasts longer than a few years you need a much larger pot.. they can Grow huge!! And can last many years getting larger and larger....

    I am using this method, and am having similar results. I have kept my chayote on a thermostatically controlled heat mat set to 80°F since I first put it in the plastic bag.

    I recall as a child in Jamaica. There was a labour strike at the cigarette factory, and cigarettes were becoming scarce. Some diehard smokers dried the leaves of the chayote (in Jamaica - cho-cho) to make homemade smokes!?
