  • In this video, Kirby Allison teaches you a way to Mirror Shine Dress Shoes using a common household hair dryer. After the waxes are heated with the hair dryer, you can use a High Shine Chamois to push the waxes into the pores and then buff as normal. The purpose of heating the waxes is to open the pores and soften the waxes so that they are accepted into the leather pores.

    This guy is a damn enabler! I never knew anything about shining shoes, all I did was get some cheap cream and apply it on my shoes till I found out about this channel. Luckily there is a shoe store in my city who also restores shoes. He sells the entire Saphir shoe shine product line. So I got the cream, pate de lux, mirror gloss and reno mat, one large and small brush. I ended up spending almost 70 euros, but if you care about your looks it's def worth it. My cheap wing tipped dress shoes look very nice now with the mirror shine. Shining shoes is becoming an obsession for me, whenever I see some guy wearing business shoes it grabs my attention instantly, checking out if he takes care of them or not. Whenever I wear my shoes often I can't stop looking at the shine and wonder if I could do better. My next step is buying a couple Allen Edmonds shoes. Thank you for introducing me into this new hobby!
    BTW Kirby, since this is a gentleman channel I wonder if you're familiar with classic traditional wetshaving? If you do couldn't you do clips about traditional shaving? Single edge razors, double edge razors, different brushes, soaps, aftershaves etc. IMHO it would make this channel much better. If you don't you really should look into it. Since I switched used a double edge razor (DE razor) I never looked back to my Gillette Fusion. I think you would get a lot of support from the traditional wetshaving community.

    I was experimenting with a hairdryer on an old pair of shoes last week, trying to help them mold to the shoe tree to reduce creasing. What I noticed was that the polish, as it warmed, became much shinier, I guess warming the wax must have allowed the surface to level itself. Your video tells me that using a hairdryer is actually a very good idea not just a crazy experiment.

    In Bermuda, when I was in the Royal Bermuda Regiment, some of us used to put our boots in the sun in the late morning or afternoon to melt the polish into the pores of the leather of our parade boots.

    I use a lighter or candle flame directly on a fresh coat of polish....keep the flame moving over the area you are shining or it could scorch your leather....then take your kiwi cloth with a little dab of polish on it...and tip cloth edge in ice cold water...small circles using medium pressure....until cloudy nice goes...repeat. And, use tooth brush to apply polish in the stitching/grooves. Sometimes even clean nail polish on the grooves on dress shoes/boots. Signed Canadian Army girl.

    Essentially, you are just polishing a shoe. However, the way you go about it, the dedication and seriousness you bring to it. The phrase, "If it is worth doing something, then it is worth doing well" is being put into practice in front of our very eyes. (I followed your "old school" method to polish my brogues).

    Kirby, I really appreciate the honesty of this video. Your shoes look like mine -- used, nice shape, not perfect, a bit of wear on the soles... Not a showroom style shoe you pulled out just for the video. And thank you truly for the many tips! This really takes time, work, practice, trial and error -- and you convey that in this video very naturally. Is that water dispenser filled with your 3:1 mix of water and isopropyl alcohol? By the way, in addition to placing an order for the mirror gloss on your site (you *totally* sold me), I am also buying a good fabric scissors on Amazon for my shoe shoe kit. I know I will need it for the used/stained t-shirts and dress shirts I will be cutting up for my kit. Thank you for that tip as well. One last thing: If you want a really cool shoe care box, search Amazon for "MINGHU 3-tier transparent stackable compartment box organizer" (a mouthful, I know). I own two and LOVE them. Really makes organizing my care products fun, and since I can see inside, it always beckons me to shine my shoes. You may see my short slide show/video at the Amazon product page. Cheers.

    Kirby, I have tried so many times to use water to mirror shine my shoes, and sometimes it works, sometimes it totally messes up the work I've done. Usually I'll have one shoe as mirror and the other as hazy. I can usually get a mirror shine by lightly and vigorously rubbing the wax with a cotton t-shirt, after I've built up several layers of wax. Why is it that I can't get this to work using the water technique? it seems to be the most recommended technique.

    • @StyxNyx1
      @StyxNyx1 4 года назад

      Yeah, I can't seem to make the water technique work well either. Every time I do the water, I always end up buffing with a dry cloth.

    • @patrickwilliams3108
      @patrickwilliams3108 4 года назад +1

      I am not Kirby, but since he seems to not be answering your question, I will take a stab at it. There are a number of reasons that a polish can haze, but the most usual culprit is too much water. Watch your shoe closely while you are applying polish. If it starts to streak it means you have too much water and you can fix that by adding a bit more polish. On the other side of that, if your finger (wrapped with a cloth or chamois) starts to drag on the shoe rather than slide smoothly over it, it means that you need more water. Usually water haze will outgas given time, but if you trapped water under several layers of polish, you'll have to strip it down and start over.

    • @kirbyallison

      The most important thing you can do to prevent water stains is to waterproof the leather using the Saphir Super Invulner (www.hangerproject.com/saphir-super-invulner-spray.html).
      Water stains are very hard to remove once they've darkened the leather.

    Thanks Kirby, I continual reference videos like this in your shoeshine series and find them very helpful.
    One question I have is which types of shoes are most appropriate for a mirror shine? I see mostly cap-toes, wingtips, whole-cuts, and the like with mirror shines. What about split toes, loafers with a seam near the toe or other more casual shoes like a braided leather? Would it be faux paux to put a high shine or a mirror shine on these other styles?

Yes you get a shine because a wax application works well on anything anyway but, it would be much better going through necessary processes like,the saphir renovator, the color cream/paste or whatever it's called then wax and pate delux to buff off the wax.

      Jay, believe it or not, there are even different quality levels of patent leather. Real patent leather is actually a leather varnish placed on top of real leather. The quality of the underlying leather and type of treatment used makes a huge difference in look of the patent leather. Other cheap "patent leather," is literally just plastic. Really no meaningful functional difference. They all work the same. I find that with the smaller brushes I sometimes “miss” and ram the wooden body into the shoe... with a large brush, it’s a little easier to not do this. Larger brushes easier to use, also. But, when used properly, both are the same.

    What is the difference between Saphir Medaille de hor and Saphir beaute de cuir and which one is better?

    • @kirbyallison
      @kirbyallison  6 лет назад

      The Saphir Beauty Cuir (SBC, as I call it, or their standard blue label), is a good polish. It is definitely better than all of other polishes we used in this video. It contains high-quality waxes and uses natural solvents. However, the difference between the SBC and the MDO is in quality, concentration, and variety of waxes, ingredients.
      Saphir Medaille d'Or contains a different and higher concentration of hard and soft waxes, which is why you get an easier, higher shine than in the Beauty Cuir. It also contains a higher concentration and quality of pigments, which produces better recoloring and restoration of the finish.
      And there is a "huge difference" in the waxes you are using in the Saphir Pommadier MDO vs. SBC. The Saphir SBC uses almond oil vs the shea butter in the Medaille d’Or. Combined with the unique combination of the other waxes, the Saphir Medaille d'Or is a much better nourishing polish and produces a higher-quality, longer-lasting shine.
      Lower quantity of beeswax in the Medaille d’Or vs. vegetable saxes, which produce better nourishing. MDO contains carnuba wax (I'm spelling this incorrectly), which is a harder wax that produces a higher shine.
      Tons of differences... is the Saphir Beauty Cuir good? Yes. Is it better than the Saphir Medaille d'Or? No.

      Depends how extensive the polish is. If you do a full shine/polish, you just need to buff it up and give it some shoe creme once a week. The full polish maybe once every 3-6 months.

      Leather is durable, the only issue I could see is drying. If conditioned properly shouldn't be a problem. I have been in weather so hot that it melted the wax right off. Shoes were fine though.

    I have just realised how simple American people are; a brush is a dobber and a cloth is a shammy.

    • @usernamemykel
      @usernamemykel 2 года назад

      It's not that American people are simple, it's that KIRBY says dauber (the correct spelling) for a brush polish applicator, and refuses to acknowledge that a so-called "shammy", which is lazy for Chamois, is goat skin, not common cloth. He gets all dressed up to sound foolish.

    Honestly this all-Saphir care regimen.. Are these shoe polishers all over youtube paid off by Saphir?
    Reno'Mat price in UK £10 for 100ml. Methyl alcohol -superior job done, £10 for 3 litres.
    Saphir Renovateur £13.95 for 75 ml. Renapur Leather Balsam £10 for 125ml -better and lasts several times longer weight for weight.
    Saphir Pommadier Creme £12 for 75ml. Woly Shoe Paste from Germany, same stuff (except *doesn't* use paraffin) £5.12 for 50ml.
    Some of the actual polishes by Saphir are reasonable and do a good job.
    Mirror Gloss is so so, great product, but £20 a tin for something we'll only use on our toecaps? That's a personal choice I guess.
    Overall, stop hawking Saphir and please, stop being such a blatant fanboy.

    Kirby,
    An interesting video but you need a much better script and a good editor. Although repeating aspects of the process can aid a learner in absorbing the material, I think too much of your dialogue overlapped or was repeated more than was necessary.
    Did you say “barrage” when you meant to say “mirage”? “Soften” with the “t” pronounced?
    With a good script you would avoid so many of your regional accent peculiarities. Colloquial isms distract from your message as they become an unintended take away-a distraction-for some viewers.
    Video/television tutorials can be more effective if they are explicit but shorter than real time. You obviously condensed this demo but it could use tighter editing. As a viewer this lengthy detailed analysis can become tedious as I can jump ahead logically based on the information that you have already supplied. Good information given succinctly is what you’re after. Repeats and dialogue glitches mar a good performance.
