  • 8 July 2022 marked the 200th anniversary of Percy Bysshe Shelley's death in Italy. To mark the occasion we have teamed up once more with 313 film production and director Giulio Boato to bring another video story with immersive sound. 'The Last Days of Shelley' picks up where our previous film 'Shelley in Rome' ( • Keats-Shelley200: 'She... ) leaves off.
Through evocative visuals and 3-dimensional sound it recounts the twilight of the poet's life and examines his untimely death by drowning off the coast of Italy while sailing from Livorno to Lerici in the Gulf of La Spezia. His body was discovered on the beach at Viareggio some ten days after the shipwreck and was identified by the copy of Keats's poems found in his pocket.
'The Last Days of Shelley' is narrated by Julian Sands, who'd previously played the poet in Ken Russell's film Gothic, and Beth McCreton. It was premiered as part of a 2 hour event hosted by the Keats-Shelley House and Keats-Shelley Association of America on 8 July 2022, and later in the same evening as an independent short film.
The Keats-Shelley House is a museum dedicated to the second generation English romantic poets who lived in, and were inspired by, Italy, and housed in the final home of John Keats, who died there in 1821. The House is close to the place where Mary and Percy Bysshe Shelley stayed in 1819, and directly in front of the building where Lord Byron stayed in 1817.
