The Times Square "Disney" characters are a scam also. I fell for it last fall, Had 4 people dressed up as Mickey and Minnie and asked me for a picture so I did. Then after they took a pic with me they asked me for money. I handed one of the Minnie's $5 and she said "how about $20"?. I was shocked. I left and they only got $5 from me lol.

Don't take the Staten Island ferry? We went in the middle of the holiday season, in the middle of the day. It wasn't busy at all (the boats are enormous) and it was a lovely trip with a fab FREE view of the Statue of Liberty. Can't imagine why anyone would pay for that.
Jessica James I live in Staten Island and I can tell tell you to take the Staten Island ferry because it’s free and you can get a clear view of the Statue of Liberty ,and Staten Island is very safe .
I often advise tourists to take the Ferry. The cruises are way too expensive for what they are worth and going to Liberty Island, while nice, is a big time and money suck and unless you have lots of both, probably not worth it. But I have to admit the first time I took the Staten Island Ferry, I was disappointed to find out they make you get off the boat in Staten Island before you can turn around. I was hoping to just stay on board. I had lived in NYC my whole life up to that point (I was about 20 at the time) and hadn't gone to Staten Island yet. I had no desire to start then.
Bumped into you while you were filming this....was weird because we literally watched your ‘how to get to Manhattan from the airports in New York’ clip earlier that day (btw that clip is spot on and we got to Manhattan in no time). Thanks Sarah🙌🏽
I was once showing some tourist friends around and just as I finished telling them how you never run into people you know walking around New York City, who should come down the escalator at Grand Central but the only close friend we all shared who wasn't with us at the time. He was surprised.
She's wrong about the Staten Is Ferry not being a good way to see the Statue of Liberty and the other views. I'm 66, have been living in NY my whole life and still occasionally take the ferry for a nice free ride and to see the views.
When I went to New York with my family this summer my grandma gave a subway beggar $2 saying that he just got laid off and needed money for food but then I saw the same guy the next day walk out of 7-11 with a pack of marlboros. lol
Don't buy baby milk for a beggar. They ask for it specifically because it pulls at your heart strings and if you go buy that item with them you feel like you're helping. But they take the milk and sell it for more later.

That happened to me last week when I went to visit NYC. And then later that night I heard them say the same damm thing to someone else about not liking Black people and that they are the nice black people. Plus I heard they get aggressive if you don't donate enough money to them and those C.D's are blank. I mean who uses CDs nowadays?? 😂😂
Scam in NYC: push down a cheap glass vase so that it crashes to the floor and shatters when a customer enters a store. I am CERTAIN that I did not come anywhere near that vase! And the shop owner gave me a price of $5.95 for that broken vase immediately! ... I left the shop. I did NOT break that vase, I didn't even touch it.
Just watched this video. Some great advice for newbies to NYC. We almost fell for the fake taxi scam when we arrived at JFK on our first visit to NY last year. A guy flagged us as we left the terminal and had a yellow cab notepad, so we thought he was genuine until he led us to a black SUV in the parking lot. Thats when we made our excuses and left, heading back to the cab stand.

You think Times Square is funky now??? You shoulda seen it in the 1970's. I worked on 44th and 5th ave. Peep Shows, Porn Palaces, Smut shops and hookers all between 6th ave and 8th ave. I recall there was one candy store there, that's it, everything else was filth. Even the cops walked in groups, with all due respect to fellow New Yorkers, fuhgeddaboudit!

A genuinely frightening Subway beggar was on my sister's car a few weeks ago. She had a child and was talking about how they needed money- the usual. My sister didn't think much of it until she heard another passenger say to his friend, "she has a different kid every time." It really freaked my sister out. Also, many beggars are actually homeless, but if you don't want to fund any potential drug habit, you should give them some food if you happen to have any to spare. A good trick for figuring out how much they need help is if they ask for money OR food, not just money.
You can see it from New Jersey. Liberty State Park and Liberty Science Center are in Jersey City, NJ. and, to be technical, The Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey not New York.
1)Don’t take any pedicab rides unless they tell you exact price up front. If you don’t ask, be ready to be charged from $100 to up to $400 for a short ride. Even though they say it’s $4-5 per minute, just ignore and leave him. 2)When you are at central park and want to take Horse&Carriage ride, always check their official price signs on both side of carriage. Most of them charge $40-50 more than official price. 3) if you are up to buy street food (hotdog, Kebabs) always ask price in advance. Once i saw an Egyptian food vendor charged $7 for $2 hotdog. 4)Beware of street comic artists.(most of them Chinese) They say that they draw your caricature for $3. But then after finishing your drawing, they ask for another $15-20 for picture frame. They ll tell you, if you won’t buy frame for drawing, it will be ruined. 5)Be careful with comedy club ticket sellers on the street. Especially in Times sq. They charge $5-10 for stand up comedy, and you think “wow great deal” until you get to the club. When you are at club to see the show, you will be told minimum 2 drinks per person is mandatory. And you pay $30 for shitty drinks.
Thanks to share.... My partner was scammed by a guy dressed like "Elvis Presley" in Time Square. Be very carefull with this guy... She take a "selfie" only of herself and this guy told she took a photo of him, that was not true!! He claimed for money and he was very unrespectul!! Do not give money these guys!!!
I'm sorry that happened. This is the same with any costumed character in Times Square. They will demand money even if you did not ask them to be in the photo. It is terrible!

From a Native New Yorker- from Manhattan, the only things that are true are Canal St bags & the mid town electronic stores. There are "beggars" any where you go; but they are not all drug addicts. She is an elitist.
Hey Sarah, Your tips are the best! The store you showed that sells fake electronics is a place where my sister bought a perfume and it was so fake. Plus, the guy there was soooo rude to us! I told her not to buy anything there, but she was really naive. I don't know if you remember us, we met you by the Brooklyn Bridge a few days before Halloween. You were shooting the video with Lift and we got the chance to chat a little! Thanks a lot for your tips!
i live in new york city and just to tell y’all DONT SLOW US DOWN IN THE SUBWAY OR ON THE STREETS we have places to go. i will literally be walking to school and i have to go through busy ny streets and everyone is blocking the streets taking pictures
Her advice to avoid the ferry is totally sketchy. No, it's not a cruise, but it's not a pit. It's a damn ferry. Thousands of commuters ride it every day. It is perfectly fine to see the Statue of Liberty and the Skyline.
@Ronald Cotton If you insulted someone like that in real life, you could easily make yourself the recipient of violence. Trading insults on the Internet is the coward's way. And, I'm sure the ferry is great. That's not the point. If you are a smart-ass, then you can figure out what I mean.

We went to Washington DC last year, and the monks were there too selling beads. One of them grabbed my wrist and just put prayer beads on my wrist real quick.
I go to Best Buy for electronics in New York City. I just wanted to say NYC is really a great city. I was out in the street walking around and suddenly I became very sick. I sat down on the ground next to a building. This lady drove by in her car. She called 911 for me. Then these police officers came by and they saw me. The police officers stayed with me until a ambulance came. Isn't that nice? New Yorkers are very kind people.
i used to "resell" Ranger tickets outside the Garden in the 70's... i never ran into a scammer myself. Police were always around... they knew what was going on, but as long as everyone behaved themselves, we were typically ignored.
99% of the businesses in NYC are not scamming people. Those electronic stores with all the signs in the window are a scam, and don't only exist in NYC. People on the street: 100% scam in one way or another.
Got scammed by a taxi as soon as I got to New York, guy said I was at the address and I wasn't even half way there, then tried saying I gave him the wrong address, and he got mad when I showed him on my phone where I wanted to go and told me to get out. I later found out he changed me double what the full journey would have cost. And then got scammed by the CD sellers at times square. New York has no protections for tourists. Airlines should warn people about it when they are flying in
My buddy came to visit me in NYC. At the airport a guy asked him and his friend if they wanted a ride in his Lincoln town car instead of a cab. They said yes and he drove them from LaGuiardia to Hoboken where my buddy booked his hotel. It was $105. They were kind of shocked by this but that is actually what a private car costs. The reason my buddy stayed in Hoboken is because he accidentally booked in Syracuse instead of NYC and he had to rebook at the last minute. On top of that he left his cell phone in the towncar. I called and the driver answered and wanted $50 to drop it off at my place. I declined. He turned it into LaGuardia. My buddy left his hotel and they took a bus back to LaGuardia to get the stupid phone so his $105 car ride was useless. He finally gets the phone and calls me. He was supposed to meet me at noon but it's 5:00 by now and he's getting back on a bus to hook up with me in the city. And he forgot to bring his camera. This was 2003 so no phone cameras. He wanted to go to the scammy electronic store to buy one. NYC absolutely ate him up and spit him out on his first day here.
The fake electronic stores should be well regulated. I went there once just to get my iPhone unlocked and put it on a prepaid tmobile line. I obviously paid for the 1st month in advance and for the unlock. I spend about 200 dollars and 5 days after my phone just went complete signal dead, I call tmobile and they told me they had put me in a "high risk list", I asked why and they said it was because the weren't sure my credit was good enough for the account, and I said "but my plan is prepaid and I got my own phone, what's the risk?" And they were surprised as well and put me through many different people and finally one of them told me they had never received a payment and that I should go back to the store and get a refund. When I went to the store they acted like they didn't know anything and when I said I would bring the police they say "call them, they know us and would not do anything"
I bought my briefcase from one of those stores. It has been great for years. You just have to evaluate the product and not overpay. Electronics can be hard to evaluate, so be extra careful with that kind of stuff.
Something similar happened to me and instead of giving my money back they offered to give me another phone and I told them no got into a whole argument, was gonna get the police until a friend informed me they sold stolen phones, I didn’t wanna drag the whole thing out so what I did was go to my nearest apple store, explain I was sold a phone that was not working by a retailer, I had my receipt and proof of purchase and they literally gave me a brand new phone. The guy however told me that the phone had actually been sold to them in October when I bought it in January and that most likely they sold me a stolen phone bc of the no signal error . so they really do have a couple of scams going on.
This is one of Sarahs videos which are helped us to make no mistakes in NYC in October 2019. The city is great and Sarah makes a good job to inform tourists in advance. Thank you Sarah.
Also, people who "escort you" to taxis. Demand pay. I left the MOMA and saw this happen where random people would walk up to you and escort you to the taxis and say that they have a taxi ready for you. They request pay after walking you not even five centimeters.
Have to respectfully disagree with you: The Staten Island Ferry really is one of the best ways to see the Statue of Liberty and every time I've been on it it's been clean. It's really only super crowded during rush hour. Harbour line cruises are expensive tbvh esp if you are visiting the city on a budget
I was in New York for the first time last September and took a tour with a tour group. We went on the Staten Island ferry and it was clean. I really enjoyed it.
Just got back from NYC last night...first visit, stayed a week. Too much traffic, too many people, too much concrete, and too many scammers. But I didn't get scammed cause I have been around the block a few times!! We took our high school graduate for senior trip. Food was good, shows were good, Statue, Rock, WTC, Central park, One World, Broadway, but I just love to be able to walk outside on my back yard, and sit under a shade tree & barbecue. Or walk outside and not get run over by naked people playing guitars or walking in high heels. Great overall vacation for my kid though!! Thanks Sarah for the videos!!

The sunset cruise around Manhattan is well worth the $. If you want pictures, stand at the front of the boat. You get daytime pics, sunset pics and night pics, as it lasts 3 hours. This cruise and the Paris sunset cruise are the best touristy things I have ever done.
Sarah you're right...years ago I used to ride the subway begging for cash to get drugs, now it just easier to beg for drugs cause everybody has an extra blunt or two.
Stay away from anyone selling there cds just say u just bought a demo they will try to say whatever you want to donate you can but soon as you pull out singles or a 5 your somehow about to hand them 10 or they want more after the 5 just avoid talking to people who aren’t tourists
I saw that person too in Times Square since I work near there. They will say it is to get their voices heard like handing out a pamphlet, but then will ask you money for it after they have signed the CD cover, etc. Which I then said to take it back. I guess it is because I keep getting mistaken for a tourist.
Joy Phillips I was in Hawaii a month ago they had that scam there it’s everywhere the only reason the guy backed off was because bought a bag of weed from the man guy they were promoting for he knew I was from ny area because we exchanged numbers and when he saw his friend trien his hustle he backed him off .. Hawaii is expensive enough I didn’t feel like burning another 10$ even if I was in a good mood
I lived in NYC for 6 years. The most common scam is people bumping into you and claiming you broke their bottle or glasses. Tourists apologize New Yorkers say “watch it”. Person might get aggressive but it’s just intimidation. Keep walking or call the police.
There is a scammer here in Portland's Pioneer Square. He asks for just 90 cents to get to work on our Max in the morning hours. But about noon he just asks for money for a little food. You can sit there and watch him circle the square about every 4 minutes.

2:05 "Not a scam since she admitted it isn't real". Are you serious? Selling fake brands, illegal copies isn't a scam only because she admits to it? You're insane. It's totally an illegal scam. Maybe you don't feel scammed but it's a scam towards the original brands they're copying. On top of that it's without a doubt manufactured by someone who is in incredibly shitty situation, like small children, political prisoners etc. working in terrible conditions for a terrible wage. The big western companies can at least little bit monitor and control the conditions in the manufacture but these fake goods are made illegally in factories without any inspections and basic human rights guarantees.
Another one is the guys that try to sell you a CD album on the street. They will try to "get to know you" in a friendly way, then pounce when they think they have a sale. But they will say $10, but then up it to $20 at time of sale. They tried this with me and I got annoyed with them, so I grabbed my $10 back, handed him his CD back and walked off. He knew I was not going to fall for it. He knew he had annoyed me!!

Absolutely ridiculous they shouldn’t be aloud to do it , we didn’t know what we where doing as we have never been so we thought we where doing what was best ,boy where we wrong .
Sarah is beautiful and has a great message. Broadway is mostly a scam, too, but for those who want to attend, I think there's a place to buy tickets that are left over at reasonable prices.

Don't take the Staten Island ferry? We went in the middle of the holiday season, in the middle of the day. It wasn't busy at all (the boats are enormous) and it was a lovely trip with a fab FREE view of the Statue of Liberty. Can't imagine why anyone would pay for that.
I always hear people, recommend taking The SI Ferry for views of Lady Liberty.
Jessica James I live in Staten Island and I can tell tell you to take the Staten Island ferry because it’s free and you can get a clear view of the Statue of Liberty ,and Staten Island is very safe .
Shes saying don't buy fake tickets to the ferry outside because the ferry is free, sure isn't saying not to take the ferry at all.
@@Sam_on_RUclips Approximately how long is the ride to SI? I am also curious how close the Brooklyn bridge is to lady liberty if anyone knows.

So funny that we bumped into each other! I'm glad that video was helpful ☺
Right on bro !
But they take the milk and sell it for more later.
seriously??? you blame them?
How the hell sell it for more later? Like some kind of formula day trader? WTF are you talking about?

Just watched this video. Some great advice for newbies to NYC. We almost fell for the fake taxi scam when we arrived at JFK on our first visit to NY last year. A guy flagged us as we left the terminal and had a yellow cab notepad, so we thought he was genuine until he led us to a black SUV in the parking lot. Thats when we made our excuses and left, heading back to the cab stand.
Marc Johnson Led you to a Blk SUV??? Dead give away..
I live in nyc and yea most of everything is a scam like idk why Times Square is so popular it’s boring but flashy that’s about it, maybe because go to school in this area I’m not impressed by it.
I have the same sentiment with Hollywood it's just super crowded filled with homeless aspiring artist and tourist not my cup of tea lol
@@thatoneperson8154--Try the Eiffel Tower--gangs of aggressive Romanian/Bulgarian gypsy beggars being constantly 'moved on' by police only to reappear 5 mins later and with an unhealthy sprinkling of pickpockets to boot!
That One Person yeah hollywood and tokyo is overrated. Shibuya (tokyo) is better than hollywood for me but shibuya is filled with chain restaurants, a crosswalk, a lot of people, and lights.
Yea especially the Disney characters, they tried to rob one of my friends
You think Times Square is funky now??? You shoulda seen it in the 1970's. I worked on 44th and 5th ave. Peep Shows, Porn Palaces, Smut shops and hookers all between 6th ave and 8th ave. I recall there was one candy store there, that's it, everything else was filth. Even the cops walked in groups, with all due respect to fellow New Yorkers, fuhgeddaboudit!
Gypsy cabs are way cheaper than actual NYC cabs. The issue isn't cost; it's potentially being robbed or killed.
Never give any money to the homeless. They can get free food, clothes, showers, etc. No one in NYC is hungry. Don't do it.
Exactly.
Nope this is false
@Emma Samantha It's true. My friend works in a shelter. Beggars will spend your money on drugs and buzz. Don’t do it.

I was just in New York for my birthday.
Your tips were so helpful, i just wanted to say THANK YOU!!
Thanks to you i had an amazing weekend in New York.
Did not fall to any tourist traps and tried a bunch of food from your restaurants video.
Ill continue to watch and look forward to your videos for my next trip to New York.
Thanks a lot for your tips!
Woohoo! I'm glad the video helped and happy birthday!
Pretty much like this in every city so nothing new for anyone that has been in a city anywhere
Watching this, all I’m thinking is ‘😮 the picture quality coming out of that Camera is awesome’!!

You can see it from New Jersey. Liberty State Park and Liberty Science Center are in Jersey City, NJ. and, to be technical, The Statue of Liberty is in New Jersey not New York.
Had to pull a friend away from a fake monk in Central Park when they were visiting us. He was trying to sell him some prayer bracelet....
Good job saving your friend!
What, you mean this prayer ring I bought that helped me win the Powerball was fake?
To be fair all prayer bracelets are fake, unless they were personally carved by Jesus and blessed by Buddha XD
This content is absolutely mandatory. Thanks so much for this ❤️
1)Don’t take any pedicab rides unless they tell you exact price up front.

Oi no picking on my Staten Island ferry
It’s the best Tourist value in the whole New York City
Her advice to avoid the ferry is totally sketchy. No, it's not a cruise, but it's not a pit. It's a damn ferry. Thousands of commuters ride it every day. It is perfectly fine to see the Statue of Liberty and the Skyline.
She's not picking on the ferry. She is recommending an alternative that she thinks would have added value for tourists.
Hey ass wipe she is picking on the ferry
And there is. No greater value in all the city
@Ronald Cotton If you insulted someone like that in real life, you could easily make yourself the recipient of violence.
Trading insults on the Internet is the coward's way.

The funny thing about all the she said is that even the legit businesses are scamming you in NY.
99% of the businesses in NYC are not scamming people. Those electronic stores with all the signs in the window are a scam, and don't only exist in NYC. People on the street: 100% scam in one way or another.
KillaSin515 Haaaaa! believe that!!

3:20 guy doing a wheele on road
Next time, call their bluff and call the police.
The thing about these stores is that the receipts are very generic... They make sure that their company's name is not listed on the receipt anywhere.
Monks don't roam the city . People just need common sense.
This is one of Sarahs videos which are helped us to make no mistakes in NYC in October 2019. The city is great and Sarah makes a good job to inform tourists in advance. Thank you Sarah.

Not all fake taxis are scams, some of them are actually quite good!
You should also mention the scam of people selling you their CDs
CD's ? Like dvds ? Lol i cant believe i had to think twice abt what is a cd ahhh good old music containers, vintage really :)
😂😂😂😂 some will even hand you a blank cd claiming it’s their rap mixtape or whatever and demand money even though you didn’t even want it
