If it's easier to separate a small amount of gold from a large amount of copper, why not just add a lot of copper if you're not sure how much gold you have, and add extra copper just to play it safe, the more copper you add the easier it should be extracting the gold.
No, it alloys and wont separate that way. I tried it. The best bet is to either dissolve the copper using nitric acid and then aqua regia for the gold, or cupel the copper out.
