  • In which I explain and demonstrate my standards and method of making the tartan cloth 'tab' with which the buckle is mounted to the kilt.
And oh look - ,my (tiny old) camera memory ran out before I'd finished speaking!

I notice you don't put canvas in your tabs. It's fascinating to see how another kilt maker does things - your method is certainly faster than mine. Do you leave all this stitches in so they show?

I've never found the need for canvas with this method. I usually sew the stitches so that they don't show against the cloth.

Leanne , or Robert ... opinion on sewing a tube and reversing for a hidden stitch?

I fold my sides in (the same way as here) but over a strip of canvas the same width as the strap (or chape as I was taught to call it). I then baste and stitch the long edges to each other with herringbone stitch. I use a tailors awl to make the hole for the buckle to poke through and fold the fabric to size. Mine ar seized based on the finished width of my pleats - usually finishing 3 pleats across from where the buckle sits. Then the chape is stitched through all layers to secure it in place.

No, I don't use leather tabs as I consider them to be far too bulky and inelegant when compared to tartan tabs that (nearly) match the kilt.
I'm not condemning them out-of-hand, mind you - I just haven't found a way that works.
(this is your cue to find/devise a way that works! )
