My grandmother is full Irish, and she married a full Italian named Tony in 1945. When I told her about this movie she got the biggest kick out of it.

Yes, I think many Irish-Italian Americans absolutely love this great film. It parallels the experiences of many of our own family members.
I watched this for Saoirse Ronan and she was good in it but I got a say Emory Cohen is a brilliant actor, his facial expressions tells emotions without the need for words. Too bad he doesn't get the recognition for it, but there also is the fact that the Emory has an aloof, indifferent vibe going on rather than the usual charming personality Hollywood usually goes for.

I wonder if Carmella Soprano watched “Brooklyn” on her state-of-art video system with her friends Adriana LaServa, Janice Soprano, Rosalie Aprile, Gabriella Dante, etc., at her home?
And, what would Carmella and her friends have thought of the film? I remember them discussing the late Frank McCourt’s great book, “Angela’s Ashes.” Gabriella commented on what Mr. McCourt described as the Irish people’s struggle with “the drink.”
Could Carmella and her friends relate to the characters in “Brooklyn”? I don’t think we ever saw many, if any, Irish-American or even Irish/Italian-American characters on “The Sopranos.”
It’s somewhat ironic that when we got to frequently see Tiny hanging out in front of Satriale’s Pork Store on Kearny Avenue in Kearny, NJ, with his guys, you can spot what looks like an Italian-American social club , two doors down from Satriale’s. What’s ironic is that that social club is actually an Irish-American social club.
David Chase had to pay the owners of that club to replace all of the Irish flags and symbols with Italian ones when he was filming at that film location. Kearny historically had a large Irish and Scottish community.

If it had to be written by American writer and directed by American would have Tony family in the mob to spice the film up, Ellis as a drunk

there was a part in the film where, during dinner, Tony keeps quiet and lets Eilis ramble on about her life and interests. tony, like Toibin said, is keeping quiet about his love for baseball. Further into the film, we get a similar scene with Eilis and Jim, with him rambling on and eilis keeping quiet about her husband.

Tóibín's analyses of these scenes moves me so much. I've watched the film three times and enjoyed it. His commentary elevates it. If only there was a DVD extra with his comments on the entire film.
I completely agree. I'm now seeing the movie in a completely different way.
Mr. Toibin was 100% on point with his comments on his superb novel and John Crowley’s superb film adaption of “Brooklyn.”
There’s a terrific scene in the novel, which was not included in the film. Tony takes Eilis to see a Brooklyn Dodgers game at Ebbets Field along with his two older brothers (but, not the younger, smart-@ssed one).
Tony gets so involved in the ballgame, that he essentially ignores Eilis, not because he’s being rude and inattentive towards Eilis, but because he’s such a diehard Dodger fan.
So, one of Tony’s brothers begins to explain the rules of baseball to Eilis, who is fascinated
by the new and unique sights and sounds at the baseball stadium.
@@kensellers4082 omg i was looking forward to that scene when i was watching the movie. of course i was disappointed, at least the movie ending is so much better. Personally it's the last boat scene that made the movie ending so great.

Mr. Toibin has said that he might want to write a sequel to “Brooklyn.”
It would be great to see Eilis and Tony, with their young children, walking around Eilis’ hometown in Ireland. And, then bumping into that spiteful harridan Eilis previously worked for.
Maybe Eilis would tell that old battle axe, “Pog mo’ thoin” (“Kiss my @ss” in Garlic)?

Toibin’s favorite scene is mine as well. The staging of it was brilliant with Ronan in that eye-catching and colorful dress against the brick wall. In that moment, she just embodied pure life and hope and joy.
It's so interesting to see how a story differs and develops/changes when you translate it between mediums. It's also nice to see how supportive and impressed the author is of the screenplay. It's made me think about the complicated relationship between a book and its adaptation.

Very beautiful movie of a bygone era. So beautifully anecdotally intertwined with such a transformative period in the history and making of New York City. I was particularly touched by the Long Island scene, when the hard-working young man dreams up building houses for his family and starting a construction business with his brothers. He’s telling the woman he’s wooing that he plans to create a good life for them and she is sweetly supportive and understands the vision without needing to think about it. These were families that were early pioneers who laid the foundation for what NYC is today. Thank you to everyone - the author, the film makers, all.
I think that the Long Island scene was the most important scene in the film. Eilis may not have realized it at the time, but this is the scene that tells you her life will be an adventure and exciting and fulfilling, much more fulfilling than Ireland would ever be. This is in stark contrast with the life she would have had she had stayed in Ireland after Rose died and married Jim, who had been handed his life on a platter -- a place to live and a business and he almost certainly never would give her any of the adventure that she already has lived and seeks and who would never work as hard or take the kinds of risks that Tony will. He is a nice young man and would take care of Eilis, but that's about it.
When Tony says "we're gonna start a company" you can hear his determination and one can easily envision that it will absolutely be successful (I mean, builders on Long Island in the 1950s?) and that a big part of the success will be that Eilis will have the smarts and business acumen to run it. She will also have this big, loving beautiful family when all she has in Ireland is her mother, who likely would refuse to come to America even if Eilis did the needful to get her there. I would love to see the next movie when perhaps 5 to 10 years later she returns to Ireland and has to confront her past (and whether she ever told Tony about Jim). Likely is not to be.
@@gmh471The author wrote a sequel, it's called Long Island, not long after he published it, but, it will destroy you, it just ruined Tony and everyone for that matter, I think it was completely unnecessary.
I saw this movie for the first time on HBO a few years ago. I liked it, but I didn't give it much thought until it popped up again on HBO this month. After watching it again, I became hooked. I've been watching it again and again on MAX. I have to say my favorite scenes are when Tony notices her at the dance and asks her to dance. I go back to that scene every time.

I couldn't love any story more than I love this one . . . romance is in my blood anyway and it just takes me on a wave of happy, hugging, kissing, loving, and all that good stuff known as love. Tony, (in the movie), is everything I would have ever wanted in a boyfriend and a husband - he is adorable in every way possible and I wish that I were the girl in the story . . . .xoxoxo thanks so much for writing this!
Relates so well in my life. My parents are IRISH. My husbands are ITALIAN. We had to make our parents understand we were a new generation. Both families eventually became good friends. Today this is all so different.
Somewhere in your story there is an Irish and Italian mother left in Ireland and Italy. As an Irish mother of 3 teenage daughters I would be heartbroken if any of them left. They were the ones who made a sacrifice.
I wonder why, since both are Catholic , Irish and Italians have big families.

Well, the bigots will tell you that it’s a plot by the Pope in Rome, that American Catholic families have large families with many children to “take over the United States.” I’m not kidding; I knew this one jerk in undergraduate school, who actually believed this crock of bovine excrement.
The irony of this, was that this @ss had a decidedly Irish surname. No doubt, his ancestors in Ireland probably renounced their Catholicism during the terrible Irish Potato Famine in exchange for a bowl of soup, hence the derisive nickname of “souper.”

My late father was in the 36th Infantry Division in North Africa and Europe during World War II. My father was a friend of Sergeant Silvestre Herrera, who lived in Arizona and was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his bravery in taking out two German machine-gun emplacements in Mertzwiller, France in 1945. During this action, Sergeant Herrera lost both of his feet, when he stepped on a mine as he was firing at the enemy soldiers, enabling his fellow American soldiers to advance beyond the two German machine-gun emplacements.
Sergeant Herrera was also awarded the Order of Military Merit (First Class) from the Mexican government for his bravery.
I have a cherished photograph of Mr. Herrera and my father and my uncle Dan (a WW II US Navy Sea-Bee) standing together, when my parents and my uncle visited Mr. Herrera and his wife and young family in Arizona several years after the war.
Mr. Herrera died in 2007 at the age of ninety. My late father said Mr. Herrera was the finest man he ever knew.
He's such a beautiful soul. Lovely story. Thank you.
I saw the movie first, and when I finished the book and realized there wasn't the final reunion scene I got super sad
I read the book first, and when we got that final reunion scene I was like... ah..... it was a bit more open ended in the book, which I liked. On first read I felt very much her Ma made her choice for her but on second read I feel she took more control than the first time.

I had the pleasure of meeting Colm at a book fair, and I didn’t even know he was going to be there. I just happened to pass by the table where he was signing books, and I had seen the film. So I bought a few copies of his books and got them signed.
I totally agree that Emory Cohen is an talented one. He performed so well with the details like caring Saoirse in the right timing without letting her noticed at the table. Sooooo amazing actor!

Fantastic movie! As a fellow immigrant, I could really empathize with Eilis. This movie captures the sentiment, joys, and pains of being torn between two places.

I read and reread the book, a million and one times... I loved it. It's still my favorite book. I just wished the ending of the film had been written in, I would love to have read that.

Eilis and Tony should have travelled to Ireland and tried to have convinced Mrs. Lacey to come back with them to live in the United States.
Between the Fiorello-Lacey grandchildren and the large Irish-American community in the greater NYC area, Mrs. Lacey would love living in America.
And, Mrs. Fiorello, senior, could acquaint Mrs. Lacey with all of those absolutely delicious Italian dishes. Mangia!

I found this movie on RUclips. My favorite scene is after the dance when he tells her that he really likes Irish girls.
I loved the climax ! That was so much powerful.. it has no dialogue added. I would have loved if the climax had : when the hero runs across the road , the leading lady steps forward and they go to hug... That's when the screen starts to dim and just as they hug, the screen becomes black.

I loved this film and everything about it but just the fact that she left him, went back to ireland , started flirting with another guy, got his hopes high and then left him for the initial guy. I mean... is that okay? Was she sure about her love for either of them?
I think that everything is not simply about love. The author duplicates the reality, one the future. The other, the past. Each one has a job and a man. Which one is best?

I love, love, love anything Saoirse Ronan is in. I think she is the best actress of today. I watched "Brooklyn" and liked it very much. Saoirse is so naturally convincing in whatever part she plays. She is a very gifted actress. I must say, though, that I thought that the character, "Tony", was miscast. I felt that Emory Cohen took away from the film. There were a lot of dumb smirks and what not, but Emory Cohen just did not have the chops for this role, I FELT. I own the movie and would love to watch it, but Emory Cohen gets on my nerves so much, I can't watch it. I love the church basement scene. That was perfect for this movie.

@@samahita-vca The scene where they have a Christmas dinner for the "men who built the tunnels". The priest is there, as is Saorise and her landlady, as they are helping to serve the men. The men smoke and drink and there is a FINE singing scene done by "Frankie", "as a thank you to you men for all of your hard work". When Frankie sings, Saorise cries. It is quite a touching scene. Let me know if you find it.
How does the story end in the book?
In the book it just ends with her on her way to the ship and she's thinking about how the Irish guy will feel when his mom finds the note she left him saying she's leaving (cause in the book their relationship was a little more intense than in the movie) and it ends with her smiling at the thought that the words "she went back to brooklyn" will mean less and less to him over the years and more to her. So yeah its a pretty sweet and simple ending but just not as intense and beautiful as the ending in the movie with Tony
I seem to be the only one who has a problem with Tony wanting to rope Eilish into marriage before she went back to Ireland. I found that deeply disturbing.
why are ending scenes so poignant as to the desires of film makers or screen writers?? honestly?? are they the vindictive issues of the screenwriters failure to say what they had to say in 2 hours or less?
