  • Narrated video of the first version of Compliant Modular Mesh Worm (CMMWorm) robot.
    CMMWorm utilizes a compliant mesh actuated at modular segments to create waveforms along its body. These waveforms can generate peristaltic motion of the body similar to that of an earthworm. The modular mesh is constructed from 3-D printed and commercially available parts allowing for the testing of a variety of components that can be easily interchanged. The six-segment robot can traverse flat ground and pipes.

    Put this in a tube that has an ID appropriately sized. Preferably clear to demonstrate. This could be applied to internal inspection of various pipes. From full size pipelines, to smaller scale. Could be adapted to 'clean' the inside surface. Need to figure out a way to turn corners inside. Perhaps a coaxial design - one 'worm' inside another similar structure.

    Much of the movement was gliding backwards, try putting rubber feet on it.

      I don't know, seems a bit to strong for the servos and rubber feet would probably have the same effect. But for climbing walls it seems perfect!

      I advise backward facing hooks. That way you get traction in the correct direction. These hooks could be mad out of anything really.

    • @-yfm-
      @-yfm- 6 лет назад

      Mokuto Media, Maybe if you made the feet really thin, the robot is so light it probably wouldn't be able to use normal cylindrical feet. Still think something like gecko-tape would work really well since the robot's walk cycle allows for it and gives the robot the ability to climb up walls.

    I suggest you to put a distance sensor in one side. With this you can calculate the speed of the worm. Next step is to put a genetic algoritm to find the best walking-worm speed style! Why not? or a reinforcement learning, rewarding the actions that make de worm go forward and faster, punishing backwards and see if that Worm find the best way to move by themself!! Thanxxxxx, great job!

    • @petercsakvari5519
      @petercsakvari5519 6 лет назад +1

      Wheels are doing it since b.c. 10.000 or idk ... when was the wheel invented.

    • @apicit2553
      @apicit2553 6 лет назад

      In my opinion, the limb means a part or member which attach a body such as a leg, arm or wing of an animal. The wheel is also the one type of the limbs in term of robotic. I apologize if I misunderstand about that. By the way, exactly, the wheel was invented in a very long time ago, but it has a movement limitation to move on some surfaces or extreme environments. So, if the wheeled robots or vehicles could also change its structure to move in different areas (horizontal and vertical directions like a snake with small energy consumption), it might be more effective than moving just only wheels. In terms of research, if we can make the robot moving without limbs somehow, the new knowledge regarding control algorithms, mechanical designs, and material usage would be created. This leads to creating novel useful machines, robots and everything which help people doing dangerous tasks.

    • @petercsakvari5519
      @petercsakvari5519 6 лет назад

      I understand that, but ppl tend to overcomplicate things, cause they can. We have caterpillar tracks, that works just fine. We have huge ass floating wheels, that are working just as fine. This type of movement might be benefical for some sort of digging maschine, where anythin poking out of the body would just in the way. But then again, we have tunnel drills, and ... well they have wheels. Keep it simple, and efficient.

    • @apicit2553
      @apicit2553 6 лет назад

      I agree with you about the beneficial applications of wheels that you explained me, but you have still misunderstood what I am trying to say in the previous reply. By the way, thank you so much to discuss with you. Best wishes
