Clever plotline, had a feeling it would end differently than the way it was leading up to. As for the poor audio (these old movies deteriorate)put on headphones and caught a line that made me think that there was some other aspect that was coming up in the storyline, so I was glad I wore them!! It's a good movie, thanks, it's so nice that these old treasures are being saved so that we can enjoy them today!
This was directed by Maurice Elvey, who directed Ellie Norwood as Sherlock Holmes. The screenplay was written by the brillant author Paul Rotha (Fill Till Now) and Miles Mander. garbo-seastrom.blogspot.com
Most atypical of Rotha's tastes and interests, but he had to make a living. He had started in the art department, not as a scenarist, and had published 'The Film Till Now' in his early 20s. It was the best British work on the subject in the first half-century of the industry, but so scathing about the UK's contribution that the cheeky youngster found work hard to get. Maurice Elvey had been one of the few bright sparks in Britain's silent era with movies such as the suppressed Lloyd George biopic and 'Hindle Wakes'. But he too found talkies tough. This one was not produced by a major studio. It came from Julius Hagen: one of the 'superproducers' inflating the bubble of the post-Korda period, which ended in tears. Rotha was rescued by the rise of the documentary movement: a far better channel for his soft-left didacticism than the umpteenth rehash of 'The Lodger'.

What a thoughtful man...asking her to meet him at night, in a dark secluded place when a killer is on the loose!
All men are thoughtful that way don't you know. (sarcasm added)

SUPER MERCI POUR CE P'TIT BIJOU LONDONIEN !..
"John Martin", the reporter, is the redoubtable English actor, Jack Hawkins. Hard to recognize because he's so young here.
Wonderful

That's funny. I work on that kind board operating. It was a blast from the past wow💨😁💯
What a very young Jack Hawkins! Reminds one of an American Chester Morris --although Hawkins star was destined to shine much brighter.
I almost didn't recognise him, compared to 1959's "Ben-Hur".

Unfortunately the audio is so bad I was unable to continue after 14:49. Too bad, looks like a great story!
I didn't find the audio bad, at all. I understood everything. Too bad that you gave up so quickly, it was a good story!
i agree audio terrible but I made it through it
Good 🎥😊
I doubt it was planned, but the shadow cast by the banister at 12:55 looks like black-and-white keys of a piano keyboard.
As a USC film grad I can absolutely say that this is absolutely suboptimal trash that needs subtitles
It is more known as "The Lodger", the sound version of earlier Hitchcock hit (with same Novello).

Bad audio,I am already hard of hearing, had to give it up
A bit of tease at 24:00.😮
Ivor Novello was handsome.
Sorry, i know where this is going. This guy's too creepy to watch. Prefer something a bit lighter..
